Gary Oldman talks a little about The Dark Knight Rises and marrying Tom Hardy

03.08.2011

At this point, I'll take whatever info I can get about THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

Honestly though, I should be used to the secrecy that constantly surrounds Nolan's Bats series. I know one of the biggest worries with this film is will it turn out to be a SPIDER-MAN 3. A case of too much shit in one movie. Gary Oldman comforts me when he gives some details about the third and final film.

Right off, MTV asks if Oldman has seen a script yet, "No, I haven't seen the script yet--I know the story though, and it's a great story. I mean, you look at The Dark Knight and think how's he going to top it? But I think he has." The interviewer tries to pry more details out, but Oldman knows the drill, "I can't say anything. I'm sworn to secrecy. They will kill me."

Then Oldman is asked if the scope is bigger, does it have that finality to it? "Yeah the scope of it and also the way he sort of brings it back to Batman Begins. And really what Christian, what Bruce Wayne discovers about himself, what he learns about himself at the end of this one."

But what about Commissioner Gordon, will he have a decent sized role in TDKR, "Yeah, he says that it's a good role but I'll have to wait and see won't I?"

The final question posed to the actor is whether or not he has worked with some of the new cast members yet, "Yeah I just worked with Tom on Tinker, Tailor [Soldier, Spy], I'm off to do a couple of days with him on The Wettest County [in the World] and then we work together on Batman. And then we get married. It's 2011. It's the year of Gary and Tom."

Extra Tidbit:

I still say he should be The Joker. Thumbs-down me all you want, but if and when they have The Joker make a brief but extremely powerful cameo in TDKR, everyone's bound to get the effin' goosepimples. If they're not saying who JGL is, I think it's a safe bet that they want him as The Joker. A 2-minute stint under proper lighting AND good makeup can do wonders. And no, for the millionth time, it's not disrespectful to the late, great Heath Ledger. Another actor following in your footsteps and

i don't think this story even needs the joker making an appearance at all if they wanna play it smart and make it cool.

polarboy, I completely agree with you! Honourable, not an insult!! (although, my personal choice to continue the role, if they really wanted to do it, was Guy Pearce).

Sulaco, sorry bud, but we don't even KNOW what "this" story really is.. Nolan had Joker planned for the sequel originally, so what's to say the story isn't similar to what Nolan originally planned???

i can totally see JGL as the Joker taking on a Hannibal Lector-esque role, even if only for one scene. sure it may not be needed, but damn would it be awesome.

EPIC!!!

I just hope they don't edit the hell out of Rises like they did with TDK. If this truly is the last film in the franchise then I wan't a three hour epic that takes its time and and doesn't feel like it's constantly rushing to get to the next scene. It should be the Apocalypse Now or Dances with Wolves of superhero movies, a long epic journey by the end of which you feel just as exhausted as Batman himself.

For the record, Spiderman 3 didn't suck because there was "too much shit in one movie," it sucked because it sucked. It sucked because Topher Grace sucks, because Emo-man should not have had song and dance numbers, because sand SFX sucked, and because Kirsten Dunst apparently didn't want to be there.

My guess is Sam Raimi just never watched any dailies after shoot days to see how uncomfortably awful things were really going.

On a side note, I am pumped that Wettest County is moving forward.

Yeah, this film is way overhyped already. It will be a good film, Nolan is a good filmaker, but man, fans are gonna love it, for a bit, then turn on it, guaranteed.

Gary Oldman is the shit

I can definitely see JGL as the Joker, I mean, look for pictures of them side by side, they're practically brothers, plus they've worked together. It would probably be an honor for JGL to play Heath's character. While I don't see Joker as a major villain in this movie, I still see him playing a pivotal role.

Hey guys:

The Joker will not be in this film. Nolan confirmed that a while ago, and to me it sounded absolutely definitive. I can't believe people still think we will see The Joker in the next film... if it actually happens, I will literally eat my underwear. Nolan won't go there.

Great interview with Oldman. Few details but sounds promising.

The idea of revisiting Who is Bruce Wayne is reassuring to me. The first film left a lot of questions like that up in the air. The second film more or less side-stepped the issue in favor of the moral questions raised when everything goes to shit. Coming back to the internal conflict could keep things interesting without trying to eclipse the second film.

I'm hopeful here, but while many films have managed to have a sequel better than the original film, Khan, TDK, Godfather, Spiderman, none except for perhaps LOTR has ever had a straight progression where the second was better than the first and the third be the best of the series. Crossing my fingers.

The only Joker I can see being in this is maybe the back of him inside his cell at Arkham and Heath's laugh that's recorded from TDK at the beginning or end of the film or something.

I wonder if this could possibly lead to a Catwoman origin movie. Make everyone forget the 2004 CINO version and give us the Pfeiffer style one we were supposed to have.

Got to love Gary Oldman.
Great point, FilmBufffff. If I have one issue with TDK is the almost jarring cuts between certain sequences that, I believe, deserved more of a lingering establishing shot or smoother transition. I think editing sequences that tight can often have the opposite effect the director is after. While cutting seconds maybe even 2-3 minutes from the run time, it can actually make the film seem LONGER because it draws so much attention to the edits and the apparent attempt to

Gary Oldman is the man.

Hopefully The Dark Knight Rises is the best one, but I still think when all is said and done Batman Begins will still be the best out of the three.

Honestly, there's really no way to avoid the Spider-Man 3 comparisons and that will hold through the release, I guarantee it. SM3 wasn't all bad, contrary to the mob mentality and whinny fanboys but it was in no way as good as the second installment. Nolan fanatics had better get ready for the backlash because following TDK will be near impossible.
