Gary Ross to direct Sandra Bullock-led all-female Ocean's Eleven movie

10.30.2015

Ocean's Eleven Gary Ross Sandra Bullock Banner

In news that is sure to induce more than a few groans and eye rolls comes word from The Playlist that THE HUNGER GAMES and SEABISCUIT director Gary Ross has been set to helm an all-female OCEAN'S ELEVEN movie, with Sandra Bullock in the lead.

Olivia Milch (QUEEN & COUNTRY, LITTLE WOMEN) has turned in a draft of the script, and apparently late producer Jerry Weintraub, OCEAN'S director Steven Soderbergh, and franchise star George Clooney started work on the project last year.

The site goes on to say "It's unclear how directly connected (or not) this remake/reboot/sequel/spinoff will be to the Soderbergh pictures, but everyone is keen on this new ‘Ocean’s’ project," and that there's a chance Clooney will cameo as Danny Ocean. The all-women OCEAN'S flick is expected to be Ross' next movie after THE FREE STATE OF JONES, which is scheduled to open on May 13, 2016.

Like Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS, this just seems incredibly gimmicky to me. Why can't it be an original heist movie featuring an all-female team? I'm going to reserve (some) judgement until all the details about the planned film come out though, and maybe it won't turn out as bad as I'm picturing it in my head. Who would you like to see star alongside Sandra Bullock in Gary Ross' gender-swapping OCEAN'S ELEVEN?

Now this trend to be equal & diverse is the problem I have with Hollywood right now. Don't get me wrong I'm all for equality on all fronts, but turning everything into something all-female isn't the right way to do it. Just because you have young actresses like Jennifer Lawrence supporting the cause or these moronic SJW's or whatever, it's just the wrong way to try to promote awareness. It comes off as hypocritical because anyone who tries to criticize or give an opinion is labelled as sexist

All in all I really hope this trend stops, because to me it's doing more harm than good.

It will be set in Vegas but in Strip Clubs instead of Casinos, take that SJW's. And Danny Ocean will set up the heist while he is getting an 11 way lap dance.

If this was an original female heist movie with a big cast, people would still complain it feels like a Ocean's 11 knock-off. Might was well use the name for marketing purposes I guess. I'm not the biggest fan of these female reboots, but honestly the comparison to Ghostbusters is way out of place. People are pissed about that because they wanted a Ghostbusters 3 with the original cast, or for it to at least be a continuation of those films. And with actors that most consider funny. Nobody was

Nobody was begging for Ocean's 14 (honestly those movies were mostly cash grabs for all involved), and besides the Clooney one was a remake anyway.

An all female heist movie with Sandra Bullock sounds great. An "Oceans 11" remake with an all female cast seems pointless (cue angry mob calling us sexist)
Honestly, why the hell don't they give Sandra her own heist movie instead. Why does it have to be a remake of something that is not that old to begin with. You aren't helping women own their films by rehashing all male cast into all female ones. Be creative and give women their OWN genre film instead of a remake.

I was going to say something, but you said it all, and you said it better.

Fucking Seriously!

Are you kidding me! This is what Hollywood thinks people want to see. This all female reboot trend needs to die and die quickly (and preferably as painfully as possible).

Danielle Ocean, I guess. However, an all-female heist team is very intriguing. Personally I think it should be an original movie with original characters, not a remake from another movie.

This is interesting if only to think about who they'd cast alongside Sandy.

As per usual, I'd love to see Alexandra Daddario in this as I'm pro Alexandra Daddario for everything.

I used to ask myself similar questions about remakes all the time, but after the way that Lockout lawsuit went I give up.

They could have just called it an all-female heist movie

Or better, "a heist movie with Sandra Bullock". The Ocean's Eleven franchise isn't specific like Ghostbusters so there's no need to pretend there's been a gender swap. It makes the film sound gimmicky for no reason.

Interesting trend

There's an interesting trend developing in Hollywood that instead of creating new and original female driven movies, they simply redo preexisting films with a female cast. It reeks of pure laziness and a not addressing the real issue of the lack of female representation in not only acting, but also directing. Dammit Hollywood, why must you be so stupid!

Worse, by assigning the "female" tag on it (instead of just saying it's a heist movie and that's it), it puts an unnecessary pressure on the film to succeed. The failure of a film promoted as "female" will have worse consequences on female representation than a female lead movie that isn't promoted as such (like Hot Pursuit, for example).

Bring it on

It might be terrible, but it might not. I really don't care about swapping genders. I think its just an excuse to allow some talented female performers to take a stab at some mainstream fun. There are plenty of original movies out there that are shit also, so I don't think this has a higher or lower chance of being shit. I don't get the people that are vehemently opposed to this sort of thing.

This sounds awful and just as forced as an all female Ghostbusters film. And who wants to make bets that McCarthy will have a part in this as the bumbling team member????
