UPDATED! Jude Law quits! Gavin O' Connor steps in as director for Jane Got A Gun, replacing Lynne Ramsay in the Natalie Portman western

Mar. 20, 2013by:

UPDATE: The fallout continues! Deadline is reporting that with the exit of Lynne Ramsay, Jude Law has now jumped ship as well, citing that he had signed on to work with Ramsay specifically.  Her departure obviously changes that.  Wow, just when you thought it was all good to go.  No word on a replacement for Law, but with so many cast members and the original director switching out at the last minute you have to wonder how much integrity will be left.  The news of O'Connor onboard to helm is a good development, but losing more cast members?  Not so good.

After yesterday's shake up on the Natalie Portman led western JANE GOT A GUN, which saw director Lynne Ramsay deciding not to show up to work and quitting the production, the producers were left scrambling to fill her shoes.  Producer Scott Steindorff was shocked by Ramsay's departure, but remained steadfast to keep the production on track, saying, "...we are keeping the show going on, directors are flying in, and a replacement is imminent."  And, just as he said, the replacement has arrived in the form of WARRIOR director Gavin O' Connor.

And, suddenly, I'm actually interested in seeing JANE GOT A GUN.  I wasn't exactly inspired by Ramsay to begin with, but O'Connor is a better proven filmmaker, especially for a film that would require some action.  O'Connor's WARRIOR was an outstanding film and one of the most underrated I've seen of late.  His other credits include the Kurt Russell hockey pic MIRACLE and the crime drama PRIDE AND GLORY with Edward Norton.  He hasn't had a major studio hit, but he's a solid filmmaker with a lot of promise.

I would say that the production was not only saved, but actually boosted by having O'Connor step in.  Now, it's time to get to work as production resumes for JANE GOT A GUN, starring Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton, and Jude Law, which is slated for release sometime in 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Do you think the film is on better rails now or do you think it's doomed by the loss of Ramsay?

Since Ramsay was connected to this from the start, I think there might've been more of a through-line had she stuck with it. But O'Connor is a good director, so I'm optimistic. Bummed about Law though.

The film is far far better off with Gavin instead of Ramsay, that hack.

Not going to lie. Half of my interest just left this film with Fassbender AND Law quitting. Hopefully they can replace Fass and Law with someone just as good.

Hmm...

Maybe they could get Fassbender back or convince maybe former O'Connor employee Tom Hardy to join or maybe Colin Farrell.

Lucky

They are lucky they got such a good replacement. But loosing Law hurts, but he can probably get talked into staying.

I agree 100% with JCPhoenix, Ramsay would have turned this into a completely distinct vision. But I'm really happy for O'Connor. I loved Warrior (which he did a beautiful job writing and directing) and it's gonna be great (and interesting considering the the circumstances) to see him tackle an A-list project. But again, it's just not gonna be the "auteur's piece" that it would have been with Ramsay at the helm. Either way, I wish this production luck.

Not bad

Just hope he can keep a hold on things for this one. I was sort of saddened watching the special features on Pride and Glory finding out that there could have been more awesomeness to that movie if only time and resources had be better managed.

Shucks

I was betting on Natalie Portman taking over because she was being too controlling, I guess Lynne Ramsay was just a jerk then. Tsk.

I was thinking the same too! She's becoming something of a diva as of late.

Sounds like production is a complete mess, which makes O'Connor a smart choice as he's got the technical skills and energy to right a ship. Loved Warrior and the pilot he directed for 'The Americans' got me instantly hooked on that show.

Whether or not this particular project is salvageable remains to be seen. O'Connor should at least bring some strong character moments and action sequences.

Lynne Ramsay is a far more interesting filmmaker than Gavin O'Connor. What she did sounds like a dick move, but regardless, the production definitely suffers from her loss more than it gains. Even if you aren't a fan of Ramsay's, she spent 9 months on pre-production on this film whereas O'Connor will have to jump right in. I like O'Connor - thought Warrior was pretty great but Ramsay's version would most likely have been far more distinctive, a Western drenched with atmosphere and no doubt,

With the little preparation time O'Connor has, what we can probably expect is a functional telling of what might be a great story, but not much more.

I'm a big fan of O'Connors last two movies but doesn't this kinda scream that Steindorff is really the guy in charge? He's probably a talented guy but projects with a backseat director never turn out well, in my opinion. Call me naive but I like to at least have the illusion that the director is actually, y'know, directing shit.

Count me in...

Warrior was the best movie in 2011 in my opinion and O' Connor is a great addition to the film. The re-teaming of him and Edgarton is a pretty great. Maybe they could dump Law and get Tom Hardy (wishful thinking). Can't wait to see this
