Update: Arterton's publicist is denying this claim, saying "there's no truth to it." But the question still stands, do you think Arterton would be good in a role like this? If this gets enough press or support, might it actually become a reality?

It seemed rather out of character for Ridley Scott to all of a sudden sign on for not one, but two ALIEN prequels, a franchise most figured he'd long left behind. But after a string of films that were somewhat disappointing to most, it appears he wants to head back to what he knows. And who will join him on this ride?

According to an interview with The Sunday Times [via The Playlist], CLASH OF THE TITANS and PRINCE OF PERSIA's Gemma Arterton says she's meeting with Scott to discuss possibly taking the lead in the new films. If you're wondering why Scott would seek her out after TITANS and PERSIA were largely yawn-fests, it was her role in THE DISAPPEARENCE OF ALICE CREED that caught his eye, and it's probably not fair to blame her for the failings of those two duds, whose flaws went way beyond any contribution she might have made in either film.

To clarify, no, Arterton would not be playing a young Ripley, here's a refresher on the premise behind the prequel films.

“[The film] is about the discussion of terraforming — taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life.”

"The film will be really tough, really nasty. It’s the dark side of the moon . We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?"

It takes place 30 years before Ripley, and has to do with uncovering the mystery of the "Space Jockey" in the downed ship from the first movie.

What do you think about the idea of Arterton as the new Weaver-type in the ALIEN series?

Extra Tidbit: I'm just curious to see if Ridley still has his sci-fi touch after all these years.

I'm a sucker for Gemma, but acting chops? Dunno?
I am sick of all the different sequels, prequels & such, but this is one I actually want to see. Can she be the the strong female lead as was Siquorney Weaver? That seems highly doubtful as Weaver pulled it off brilliantly & no one could have done it better, especially in "Aliens." Gemma was so stunningly beautiful in "Prince of Persia" the crapfest it was, it makes me wonder. She seems a...

Can never have to much Gemma, too bad she just got married. RATS. Like any of us had any chance anyway@! LOL

I dont want to come across as sexist, but why doest he lead have to be female?

Because all the other Alien movies had a female lead and that worked?

I would some how just feel a bit samey (if thats even a word). Would she kinda be the badass chick like Ripley? She'll have to have some serious character development to define her.

SPOILER
if she is up for the lead role, they can't be making that Alien Harvest script, unless they're replacing one the of the male characters with her to remove the gay sex...

I love her and totally disagree about what the red posters say about her. She was the best thing about Prince Of Persia and Clash Of The Titans. I wanted to see her in an Alien movie. Maybe in an underwear scene like Ripley?

based on stuff like persia and titans, you'd think her terrible for this type of thing. But remember, Titans somehow managed to make Neeson and Fiennes look terrible too. Watch Disappearance of Alice Creed (which is badass btw!) and tell me after that you don't see her for this. Seriously, think of it as a challenge. Watch it and come back to post.

So the central human protagonist of every Alien flick has to be female?

Arterton is a wooden, dry, talentless actress. Have you seen anything she's been in? Quantam of Solace, Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia. She was horrible in all of them.

To be fair, I hope to see her in smaller films to see if she improves. But putting her in another big budget film is a BAD IDEA.

I am curious about the space jockey though.

I agree with Lone Justice and Grizzly Bear, leave the space jockey storyline alone. I would love to see Arterton in this, but if these movies never got made, I wouldn't mind either.

I completely agree with Lone Justice. I guess I could go for a prequel, but leave the Space Jockey idea alone. I don't wanna know what happened on that ship. Come up with a different story line......Oh, and make sure that it has nothing to do with Predators running around on it either.

I hate the idea of uncovering the mystery of the Space Jockey- that unknown element was one of THE most important parts of why ALIEN was and is so great.
