Gene Hackman is no longer acting, but is still working

09.29.2010

Screen legend Gene Hackman may have quietly retired from acting a few years back, but that doesn't mean his creative juices have frozen.

Hackman, whose last film was (tragically) 2004's WELCOME TO MOOSEPORT, has been occupying his twilight time with writing (in between the occasional pitchwork for Lowe's). The 80-year-old star of classics like THE FRENCH CONNECTION, THE CONVERSATION, HOOSIERS and UNFORGIVEN, will publish his first solo novel next summer.

The book, titled "Jubal's Bounty", is a Western set in late 19th century New Mexico. Hackman had previously co-written three other novels (with Daniel Lenihan), "Wake of the Perdido Star", "Justice for None" and "Escape from Andersonville". Hackman obviously knows his way around a Western -- besides his Oscar-winning part in Clint Eastwood's film, he roamed the dusty trail in THE HUNTING PARTY, BITE THE BULLET, THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, WYATT EARP and GERONIMO.

A few years ago, Hackman had this to say about the writing process: "I like the loneliness of it, actually. It's similar in some ways to acting, but it's more private and I feel like I have more control over what I'm trying to say and do."

Extra Tidbit: Tony Scott, who directed Hackman in CRIMSON TIDE and ENEMY OF THE STATE, was trying to lure Hackman back for his heist thriller POTSDAMER PLATZ with Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham, but no dice.

Come on Hackman!

...always one of my all-time favs. It would be awesome and come full circle is he made an appearance in Potsdamer...I'd like to see Sean Connery have one more go at something too...

Hackman's the man

Definately top 5 favorite actors. Awesome in Crimson Tide & Unforgiven. Cracked me up in Heartbreakers and ruled as Lex Luthor!

One of my all-time favorites. From "The Conversation" to "Unforgiven" to "The Royal Tennenbaums," Hackman is a treasure. I read he retired because he was aging into the grandpa role, and I must admit I can't fault the man in his logic. I still think it'd be interesting to see what he could do now working alongside such older actors as Christopher Plummer and Michael Caine, who have, on occasion, managed to sidestep that bit of typecasting.

Loved him in Unforgiven. If there was an Uncharted movie, he would've been the perfect Victor Sullivan.

A legend now...

He's been in so many films, and worked with various actors and directors. (Even though I wasn't born then, I remember him in an episode of the classic sci-fi series, 'The Invaders' so Hackman has been in the business a long time).

Come back, Gene!!!

No matter what small role he played in a film, or how bad that film may have been, Hackman ALWAYS came through and was always interesting to watch. I loved him and Denzel going head-to-head in CRIMSON TIDE. Come back, dude...one more small role to place a small cherry on your awesome career!

I always secretly hoped he'd get a small cameo on Smallville, since several actors from the original films did. But that was when Smallville was still good.

I thought Runaway Jury was one of his last great films. Its a shame he stopped but I'd rather him retire instead of releasing crap

YES! Brooke Langton in a cheerleader outfit and Gene Hackman in the same movie? That's a win-win! I never miss that when it's on.
