Geoff Johns says Aquaman is a priority for the future of DC

Nov. 27, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Playing the game INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US the other day, I was struck by how friggin awesome Aquaman is in the game. His scenes are badass and his finishing move is one of the coolest of any character. But, it still struck me that he works as a supporting character, like Green Arrow or Cyborg, but I could see him carrying his own movie if it was setup similarly to THOR.

DC Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns, spoke with Variety about the King of Atlantis and how he plays into the plans for DC:

Hes a priority character for the company He became a little bit of a joke Suddenly, he was nobodys favorite super hero Hes a character that we talk quite a bit about There is no doubt in my mind that this is one of the most well-known characters among super-heroes, and in popular culture.

Aquaman became a recurring plot element on the series ENTOURAGE where a film version was directed by James Cameron. It is entirely possible to make a cool Aquaman movie, but I would think DC needs to ensure the planned JUSTICE LEAGUE movie works before going that route. There had been plans for a television series about Aquaman on The CW that didn't pan out. That network has struck gold with their ARROW series and an upcoming series for The Flash is likely going to do well. Not to mention the Gotham PD/Commissioner Gordon series floating our there in development. DC seems suited for the small screen, but I can see Aquaman fitting in nicely in the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie as the DC equivalent of Thor. He comes from a line of mythical beings, has god-like powers, and doesn't fit in well with humans.

I think if they want to get it right, use the INJUSTICE model for Aquaman and you can't go wrong. Especially if he feeds people to sharks.

If done right, Aquaman movie can be as big as Thor movie. Something along the line of theory of the existence of Atlantis collide with us mortal world.

Anyone whos kept up with DC comics knows that Aquaman has been badass for the last 20 years or more, the new 52 Aquaman I think is one of the top "52" comics if not thee top one. I do hope that if a film comes out Geoff Johns has something to do with it.

I recently had a chance to read Justice League The New 52: The Throne of Atlantis. What an effin' ride it was! And you're right, Aquaman is Badass.

I'd much rather see an Aquaman movie than more Thor movies

Aquaman is a badass superhero in his own way and I would love for DC to make Aquaman the 'Thor' of their film universe and to actually make a really good film out of the character. But like BojacRedleif said below, I would rather DC concentrate on Wonder Woman more first and to actually figure out a way to introduce the character. Whether it be in Superman/Batman or in her own feature film.

But I also think alot of the success on a film and character like this relies alot on whoever

But I also think alot of the success on a film and character like this relies alot on whoever directs. Aquaman isn't a household name (yet) like Iron Man, Batman, Superman, etc. is and it would take a really good director who really understand the character and could bring the universe to life. For instance what Kenneth Branagh did for Thor is what someone needs to do for Aquaman.

And I could see Alexander Skarsgaard, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Aaron Eckhart, or Josh Holloway making for terrific Aquaman's.

Like your casting choices. I disagree with Aaron Eckhart. But Skarsgaard or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau would be excellent in the role.

Smart move

Ultimately, DC is living in the shadow of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so they need to start thinking about how to steal their thunder. Aquaman is a DC equivalent (copy, initially) of Marvel's Namor, so if DC develops Aquaman first it might just close the door to that character for Marvel. I think it's a good move to strike first, here. I agree that he and Wonder Woman can add a mythological quality to the Justice League in the same way Thor has for the MCU. I'm looking forward to seeing

Let's hope not, as Namor is a much more interesting character. And Marvel would undoubtedly, and not to do the Marvel is better than DC/DC is better than Marvel thing, do a much better job with their underwater hero.

I think DC's The New 52 is a good start to compete with Marvel.

This seems like they are going in the right direction. I personally think an Aquaman movie could be pretty epic. In order for DC to become competitive with Marvel, they need to make sure to be true and have faith in their characters.

"Doesn't he talk to fish" jokes are old; Aquaman is a badass, a classic warrior king who's fierce and noble, and I do hope he does eventually make it to the screen. I'm sticking with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as a top choice.

Thank you DC!

I'm glad they at least know he deserves this film, and to be in Justice League. I'm really looking forward to the use of him in the upcoming films

Aquaman is a badass. My personal all-time favorite comic character. I was just hoping he'd make it to the big screen, but if they could develop him even more I'd love a full length feature film! Good news!

I guess a lot of the younger generation are only aware of Aquaman from him being regularly ridiculed on Big Bang Theory and Robot Chicken, unless they're actually into comics. Done right an Aquaman movie could be excellent.

My knowledge of Aquaman comes from the JL Unlimited animated series, where he was done really well. I since saw him in the nonsense that was Batman - The Brave and the Bold and last week, I saw an episode of Family Guy where he was hilariously spoofed - for some reason, those two incarnations have stuck in my head. My son plays Injustice and I too noted how well Aquaman was done. Then again, anyone who has seen JL Unlimited, Smallville and Arrow will know how well Green Arrow is done. If

If WB's want to make a success of the DC Cinematic Universe, there are clearly people in their ranks that know how to do certain DC characters very well.

Not sure what WB/DC's obsession is with putting all their property on TV. Aquaman should be kept away from TV altogether. I'll admit, I had written off the character after seeing him spoofed on Family Guy in the past. But since the nu52 came out, Aquaman in the comics is pretty badass. Geoff Johns has done for Aquaman what he did for Green Lantern a few years ago. There's an entire world to play with for an Aquaman movie and WB would be wise to start putting pen to paper on an idea for

On that note, I think WB/DC really needs to get the ball rolling on their cinematic universe if they want to compete with Marvel. They should scrap all of these planned TV shows they have. Keep Arrow and officially acknowledge him as Green Arrow in the cinematic universe. Forget Flash on TV and start scripting a movie for him instead.

With Superman/Batman coming out in less than two years, they will have officially relaucned their two biggest properties. But they will have nothing else to accompany that success. At this rate, most of their properties will be tied up in TV for years, which mean a cinematic universe will be put off for another 5 years. I say start making plans now to follow up Superman/Batman in 2015 with either a Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, or Green Lantern movie.

KELAN LUTZ AS AQUAMAN

The dude rocked it as Poseidon in Immortals, and has already shown that he is a complete BAD@$$ with a Trident. He was also pretty good in the underrated Arena. I know he was in them but I never saw any of the Twilight films, so if you hate Twilight please don't take it out on Lutz, give him a shot. I cant wait to see what he can do in Sly's Expendables 3, I love those movies.

Robin Williams

! This needs to be done. An actor who can portray being stuck in plastic rings from soda can packs with comedic grace and a touch of emotion.

DC has all these people saying.........

we want to do this, we want to do that. If they were smart, they would just sell off their rights to Marvel/Disney for 40% stake in anything made.
