George Clooney in talks to star in Brad Bird's mysterious sci-fi film for Disney, 1952

Nov. 9, 2012by: Niki Stephens

For those waiting for the next thing from Brad Bird, you may want to listen up.

Bird is helming a mysterious sci-fi project titled, 1952 with a script from Damon Lindelof and Jeff Jensen. There's no details on the plot since the film is being kept under tight wraps. Disney does have this rather high on their priority list. The project isn't greenlit yet, but I'm sure it's just around the corner especially with the names involved. So I'm not too worried about the development.

The film is drawing comparisons to CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, and will follow a man who makes contacts with aliens here on Earth.

Who will be the Pied Piper to the aliens? None other than the man, the myth-- George Clooney. The actor is said to be in talks with the studio to take the lead.

I'm all over this. While we don't know when it will be released, I can tell you that it's already landed on my must-see list for whenever it does come out.

Have no hate for Lindelof, but was not a Prometheus fan, so really the only interesting aspect for me is Brad Bird

You lost me at Lindelof. Uggh, that guy is an idiot. He gets hate because he writes for adults but thinks they are too stupid to understand him so he dumbs it down.

I think it's interesting that George Clooney's making a turn toward science-fiction. I mean I heard good things about his Solaris, but this and Gravity seem to be ushering in a different kind of movie, perhaps a throwback '70s thinking-man's sci-fi? Brad Bird has yet to disappoint (I forget though, did his 1906 movie fall through, or is it just in a long-term pre-production phase?).

I'm not in an excellent place to pass judgment on Damon Lindeloff. I didn't get hooked into Lost, and enjoyed

I'm not in an excellent place to pass judgment on Damon Lindeloff. I didn't get hooked into Lost, and enjoyed Prometheus fairly well. I will say I happen to agree, as far as Prometheus goes, there are questions that the film is based on that are never fully answered. Now, I don't need answers all the time, and indeed can relish the thinking as much as the answering, but it did seem maybe he could have been a little more specific. But he wrote that great love letter to Raiders of the Lost Ark, which I give him props on.

1906 is in turnaround. Couldn't get the budget to a workable place.

Damon Lindelof's writing is like an Agatha Christie novel that somebody forgot to write the last couple chapters too. He has a great sense for mystery and suspense, but seems to have no talent or even concept of resolution and closure. Brad Bird, on the other hand, knows exactly what he's doing.

This is awesome!

Extra tidbit- Lindelof gets hate because he can't be bothered to answer the basic questions that are at the heart of the projects he's written; it's one thing to not explain everything to the audience and leave them with a few questions, but he can't even answer the questions the audience came to see get answered, which makes us (the audience) feel cheated, because we were. On top of, he's also a huge douche about that in interviews, so yeah, fuck him hard.

Extra Tidbit

I think part of the hate with Lindelof is that he makes promises in the writing that aren't kept in the resolution. But no hate from me on this - the combined powers of Lindelof and Bird should make for some exciting stuff. Bird will reign in Lindelof's tendency to tease without resolution. Count me in.

toldja!

Disney is betting big on this one. The sequel is already in motion with a third film close behind it. The script is amazing and it is definitely a cross between several Spielberg classics, with some obvious Lucas DNA wedged in there. And the best part, it's a cliff-hanger, but they don't withhold all the big answers from us, as most Lindelof tales go. This thing is going to be huge.
