George Clooney on why he can't offer an opinion on Ben Affleck as Batman

Sep. 27, 2013by: Alex Maidy

George Clooney has always been vocal regarding his less than stellar turn as the Caped Crusader in BATMAN AND ROBIN. In fact, he knows far too well how the backlash can feel when things don't go quite as planned. The Joel Schumacher disaster practically killed the franchise and made fans universally wary of any additional installments. After Christopher Nolan's trilogy starring Christian Bale, no one could have gotten the part without some sort of online hate. Nothing prepared the Internet for what happened when Ben Affleck was cast.

Clooney has survived his Batman ordeal and turned into one damn fine actor and director. He even partnered with Affleck to make ARGO. The two have a professional friendship so naturally the media wants to know what Clooney thinks about Affleck taking the mantle of the Bat for BATMAN VS SUPERMAN. Clooney's answer is classic George:

"I am the least qualified person to comment on anyone playing the role of Batman since I so terribly destroyed the part," he said, adding: "I tend to look at it like this - let's just see what the movie is before everyone starts beating him up. He is a smart man, he knows what he is doing."

I agree entirely that we cannot judge Ben Affleck until we have seen something from BATMAN VS SUPERMAN. To date we have not a single image of the costume or anything because they haven't filmed anything yet! Chill out, Internet! Once those initial photos and videos leak then we can begin to say if things don't look good. But even then we need to be cautious until some actual film is available.

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN opens July 15, 2015. Until then, remember this:

Never understood why George Clooney is so hard on himself about playing Batman...very much like Reynolds, who played Green Lantern...the movies sucking had nothing to do with the lead actors involved.

BTAS cheap? Sh!++y graphic

Clooney at the time could have nailed the grim, serious Batman role, given fans seen him play cool & intense physical characters before. But everything wrong with Forever & Batman and Robin falls at the feet of the directors and producers who lacked the foresight a 12 year old at that time would have had. But nope, they wanted a big budget version of the 60's show with extra layers of neon and bedazzled dog crap.

Clooney should do an DCAU movie.

The poor guy deserved better. If they ever do an adaptation of Hush in the DCAU he should get the nod. I know it's not the same as a big screen role but let the man have a shot at redemption in something that will be done properly.

I respect him for not bashing Ben. I think he beats himself up too much about his involvement in making his Batman movie bad. The movie was not that good for so many other reasons. He did what he could with the part.

I was going to say the same thing. B:TAS was not cheap. It was far ahead of it's time with what it was doing especially in the realm of children's programming and in animation overall.

I like how Clooney doesn't try to defend Batman & Robin.

Though I don't put the blame on him for one second. I firmly believe, and will never back down from this, that Clooney could have been a great Batman. He just didn't stand a chance. There isn't one actor that could have done a good job as Batman in that movie.

Definitely. It saddens me how much he beats himself up over it when the failing of his Batman wasn't him but the Producers and the Director.

If we were all on Joblo in 1996, we all would have been jizzing our collective pants at news Seth Gecko would be the next Batman. Ditto 1994 at news Doc Holliday was set to play Bats. And while I love Bale...Affleck can pull off a gravelly voice without sounding like Cookie Monster. And again...the dude just won an Oscar, and before that directed two of the best urban crime thrillers of the last decade. He's more than earned our deferred judgment.

And I remember reading this post verbatim when Affleck was cast as Daredevil. We already went through the whole "give Affleck a chance! He has the chin! He's really grown as an actor, he's much better than he was in the 90s! Remember he won an oscar for Good Will Hunting! blah blah." Nothing being said about Affleck now, wasn't already said in 2002.

Argo, The Town, Gone Baby Gone, State of Play...in the eyes of the hopeless fanboy they all are somehow trumped by Daredevil...which was a decade ago and mostly sucked because of its interminable runtime and impossibly cluttered script.

More like it's the hopeless fanboys who build Affleck into something more than he is, because you want the movie to be good more than you want to face facts.

First of all, there is no way Goyer is going to write a script that isn't also an impossibly cluttered script. Goyer is a terrible writer. Mark Steven Johnson wrote Daredevil, and also wrote Ghost Rider (which was a bad script). Goyer wrote Ghost Rider 2, and the script for Ghost Rider 2 made the first one look like a masterpiece.

Second of all, yeah Affleck has Argo (which he won an Oscar for) & The Town, but back when he was cast as Daredevil, he also had Good Will Hunting (which he won an Oscar for) and Boiler Room. Keep in mind that Affleck only wins these Oscars for behind the scenes work. He doesn't win Oscars for acting. And also keep in mind that in every single one of these "solid Affleck films"( from Good Will to Argo) Affleck plays a character that was catered around the fact that Affleck can only really play himself. Affleck was every bit as good in Argo & The Town as he was 15 years ago in Good Will Hunting & Boiler Room. He hasn't changed as an actor, he just got smart and took roles where he could directed himself to/and/or play himself.

Every trailer and clip I see for Affleck's new Runner, Runner shows that he is still as bad of an actor has he has ever been. That if he isn't playing a very specific role catered to him, then he will fuck it up like he always has.

The movie could totally suck, I don't know. That risk is inherent in any project. Man of Steel had its problems, but overall I really liked it. The sequel could improve things a la Spiderman 2 or destroy everything a la Batman Forever.

But the reflexive hate aimed at a guy who's been on a winning streak for the better part of a decade simply because of some shitty superhero movie he signed on to a decade ago is silly. Take a fuckin' pill.

It's not just because of one shitty movie a decade ago. It's also because Affleck has been in 55 films, and of those films only around 5 were even worth watching. Affleck has always been considered a joke of an actor. His track record & multiple razzie awards show why.

I Hate To Admit This...

but I always thought that Clooney made the best "looking" Batman in the worst Batman movie. I hope that makes sense to you all. He just flat out looks more like the actual character Batman than any other actor so far (maybe it's the big square jaw he has).

Other than that "Batman and Robin" remains the worst of the movies.

Good answer

George Clooney is a fine actor, (and a good director/producer too) ...back in the day with the right director, right tone and the right script...He could have been a good Batman, maybe not the best , but a Good BATMAN for sure, it is not his fault that Joel Schumacher decided to go all Liberace and decided to shoot a stupid-campy toy commercial instead of a movie.

Affleck is 40 years old, and still has the voice & haircut of a 17 year old.

Also, I think we totally have the right to judge Affleck, since he already played the role once. There is a "fool me once" joke in there.

While I think that Affleck is going to be a very good Batman, I wholeheartedly agree with Clooney. At the very lease wait until we see the 1st trailer & character posters before hating. Or better yet, wait until you're actually sitting in the theater watching it to decide whether or not to hate him in the role.

Honestly

I can't see Affleck doing any worse than average or just maybe not that memorable. I don't think he'll be outright bad or awful. Who knows? Maybe he'll knock it outta the park. I'm remaining very curious as a fan of both his good AND his bad performances. No idea why lol

Agreed. Most TV cartoons are low-budget, but B:TAS won at least two well-deserved Emmys for its storytelling ("Robin's Reckoning" and "Heart of Ice"). And yes, any problems with BATMAN & ROBIN were not due to George Clooney.

If they really needed to use an adjective that started with the word "C", I'd go with "cherished" for B:TAS, because that's how almost all of us feel towards it.

I don't agree with Clooney on a lot of things, but it is refreshing when someone of his stature can admit when they made a bad decision. No handwringing about critics or fans, just straight up.

10 years ago wasn't that long ago. At all. It's ridiculous that people act like 2003 was a lifetime ago. Back then we had X-Men, the realistic grounded & dramatic comic book movie, then Nolan's Batman took up that mantle. Nothing has changed. All that changed is that Goyer went from fucking up Marvel movies to fucking up DC movies. If you think things have changed so much, you're most likely a kid.
