George Clooney replaces Robert Downey Jr. in Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity

12.16.2010

Robert Downey Jr. steps out of Alfonso Cuaron's GRAVITY and George Clooney steps in.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that Clooney is indeed replacing Downey Jr. as the team leader of a space station. It is also still certain that Sandra Bullock will take the lead, which is a pretty hefty role. Bullock's character will carry most of the film as a mother who is determined to get back to her child back on Earth.

Both Clooney and Bullock are off working on a shuttle when a space station is destroyed by the debris field from an exploded asteroid. They are the only survivors. Clooney had to work the film into his schedule. He will also be working on the adaptation of the Beau Willimon play, IDES OF MARCH.

The plan is to start production next year in late April or early May. You think Clooney is a good replacement?

1--George Clooney is kind of top-notch. Of COURSE this is a good choice.

2--I like Sandra Bullock, but not since 'Speed' have I thought she was "perfect" for any of her roles. But hey, maybe this'll work.

3--I love SOLARIS.

To me, this is all good signs. Let's just hope they make the movie before another walk-off happens...lol

I'm all for Clooney on this. Bullock is alright. I've never been a fan but I've never disliked her. I just don't tend to enjoy the movies she's in.

I was really looking forward to this BEFORE Sandra Bullock got involved... I mean honestly she spoke with a horrible southern accent and won an oscar for a very mediocre film. I mean that proved to me that sometimes it's just politics. I mean if it was like that then Denzel should have definitely at least been nominated for Remember The Titans, because even THAT was a better film. Catch my drift?

I can not wait for Gravity. Cuaron is definitely one of my favorite directors and Clooney is just as good (or maybe even better for a supporting role) then Downey. But yeah, why the hell does it have to be Bullock? I don't hate her, but I can think of at least 50 actresses I'd rather watch in this role.

Need this movie already

Also, if anyone could get a decent performance out of Bullock, it's Alfonso Cuaron

This is great news. Downey and Clooney are just about the two most charismatic actors in Hollywood right now, at least in their age bracket. So, good choice for a replacement. Now, we'll see how Sandra does with her part, if she decides to keep it that is.

I'm glad they got a good replacement for Downey. As for Bullock, her casting doesn't excite me but she's not a terrible actress. And we've never seen her in the hands of a director like Cuaron. I have hope. Also...I really dig Solaris. But I understand where folks are coming from who don't like it.

This is good replacing. Even though I would have loved to see Downey Jr, and thanks to Bullock taking her sweet ass time with wanting to do this movie, we'll never see that. Clooney is a perfect replacement.

I agree that Solaris is an underappreciated film.

I really enjoy two out of three of those people. Cuaron is a great director and I love me my Clooney. At the moment, I am just not comfortable with Bullock in this role.

Clooney, Cuaron, Solaris are all great. Bullock however sucks hard. She will be this movies downfall.

I got ya. I'm always amazed at how often obvious sarcasm completely goes over people's heads. Oh, and Harrow is my favorite character from Boardwalk. I dig the profile pic.
