George Lucas' reaction to the Star Wars Episode 7 teaser may surprise you

12.08.2014

By now, we have all been able to have a reaction, positively or negatively, to the first teaser trailer for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII - THE FORCE AWAKENS. Some felt nostalgia and others saw more of the same encountered in the prequels. But, there is one person we have yet to hear from regarding J.J. Abrams's first foray into the STAR WARS mythos. What does George Lucas think about the trailer?

One would have expected a blessing of some sort from the man who invented STAR WARS but we got a much different reaction. Page Six asked Lucas about the teaser and he said he has not seen it yet and doesn't plan to watch the trailer.

"Because it's not in the movie theater. I like going to the movies and watching the whole thing there. I plan to see it when it's released."

Lucas has clearly separated himself quite a ways from STAR WARS: EPISODE VII - THE FORCE AWAKENS and his entire empire overall. Once Disney took over his company, Lucas was not kidding when he said he was stepping away. Granted, some people are probably pretty happy that he is not directing or involved with the new films, but it strikes me as sad that the filmmaker who changed modern movies forever has not idea where his creation is headed.

Lucas was said to be involved as a consultant on the new films, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Or, maybe he doesn't want to sour anyone with his take on the movie lest the trolls mount an assault on anything Lucas does or does not like in Abrams' film. Either way, this is not what I hoped would become of George Lucas' legacy with STAR WARS. Hopefully he likes it when he finally sees it with the rest of us.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII - THE FORCE AWAKENS opens on December 18, 2015.

People are going to jump all over you...but I agree. This is an online publication. The least they could do is proof read their work.

Abrams probably has already shown him a lot of footage since the first day of shooting. I'm sure that none of what we've seen in the trailer would be a surprise to him. Also he did write a very basic story treatment for all three new films and and was in the early meetings to tell the team what they could or could not do.

Exactly. People hate George Lucas so much, they prefer believing he's not involved at all then checking the facts. He is involved, just not as much as before.

So George Lucas hasn't seen the trailer yet, explain to me again how that reflects on his legacy? This is not a news story.

Maybe he just wants to see the movie fresh without seeing any of the trailers beforehand, and everyone is reading too much into this.

I think it's classy

I think Lucas is doing what a good parent does with his child. He sold Lucasfilm and associated properties and has now stepped back and let the new team do its magic.

Whatever you think of George Lucas the filmmaker, George Lucas the man should be an example with what he did with the money he got and not interfering once he set his creation free.

GOOD!

Remember that original trilogy many fans have been wanting to go back to for years? The one, it seems, J.J. Abrams is finally returning to the style of? Not to mention the horrible backstory/history lesson that contradicted nearly everything we knew about Star Wars and made a wooden whiny pussy out of the [link] (Emperor Who?).
Lucas chose to walk away and leave it to someone else? Good!
Lucas doesn't like someone going back to the beginning when it all made sense and was enjoyable and fun and sparked our imaginations without having to spoon-feed us nonsensical drivel with over-the-top CGI and confusing contradictory plotlines? Oh well. Let him get his royalties off the merch and let J.J. give the fans that made Star Wars what it is what we have deserved for so long.

Uh... you realize he has writing credits for the next film?

According to IMDB anyway. He may not be as involved as he was for the other films but it was my understanding that it was his story that was being used. Even if he didn't write the script himself, he probably gave a reasonable outline of what was going to happen. Don't forget that Abrams may not direct all three films and since every Star Wars trilogy are pre-planned, somebody else has to be in charge of the overall story.

@JarrodPace I still think the story is his. Kathleen Kennedy is the new big boss of Star Wars but she's no writer and she's following Lucas' roadmap.

Hunh

I'm really surprise he isn't attached on some level. Disney or not, he's had 1 or more things to do with every iteration of Star Wars.

Who cares?

I know Lucas isn't sad he doesn't know where Star Wars is headed because of the Mt Killamanjaro of money he was paid for the franchise.

Oh you mean that money that he completely gave away to charity?? Seems to me he's trying to distance himself as far as he can from the new franchise. I personally find it sad.

I disagree Buck. I think he's being respectful to the new team. He's also sick of all the heartburn and toil these movies have given him over the years.

It seems to me, he's just saying he hasn't watch it because he wants to wait for it to come out to the theater. I dont see anything negative in his comment. I'm kind of doing the same thing. I want to avoid all spoilers and want everything to be a surprise in the theater.

I wouldn't be surprised when it's released that it pulls in more than the prequels did. But let George spend his money, and go his own things, Star Wars in in capable hands.

What did we expect?

There's a long tradition of aging Hollywood stars being asked about a re-make or re-boot of a property that helped create or define their career and they almost universally express indifference or they express bitter confusion as to the new iterations' reasons for existing beyond a money grab.
