Update: George Orwell's 1984 is being remade with Kristen Stewart in the lead

Jan. 16, 2014by: Alex Maidy

UPDATE: Director Drake Doremus has taken to Twitter to state the film is not related to 1984 at all. Screenwriter Nathan Parker (MOON) apparently based it off of the 1956 adaptation of the Orwell novel which itself was an altered version of the source material.

You have no idea how much it hurts to write that headline and know it is not a joke. Whether you are a fan of the George Orwell novel NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR or the film version released in 1984 starring John Hurt and Richard Burton, you have to recognize just how absolutely atrocious this news is. 1984 stands as a benchmark for dystopian literature and films having influenced other filmmakers into making movies like BRAZIL and EQUILIBRIUM. While Michael Radford's film version may not be the best possible adaptation of the book, this reimagining doesn't sound like it will be much better.

The new version of the tale will be titled EQUALS and star Stewart and Nicholas Hoult as lovers in a dystopian society. The film will be directed by Drake Doremus whose biggest film to his credit is the 2011 romantic drama LIKE CRAZY starring Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, and Jennifer Lawrence.

Stewart was recently asked about tackling the iconic Orwell novel to which she gave this statement.

"I'm terrified of it," said the 23-year-old actress in a recent interview. "Though it's a movie with a really basic concept, it's overtly ambitious."

"In 'Equals,' things go wrong because you can't deny the humanity in everyone," said Stewart. "It's the most devastating story."

I am scared, too. Stewart showed glimpses of acting talent in movies like PANIC ROOM but has since devolved into a cardboard cutout in the TWILIGHT franchise. She was the weakest part of SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN and has shown very little evidence of being able to handle something like 1984. But, with this sounding like a teen version of what 1984 should be, this project seems doomed from the start.

EQUALS is currently in pre-production and will likely film this year. If Big Brother is watching, please kill me before this gets released.

I dont care whos in it, but any movie version of 1984 that cant stick to the excellent lesson of the novel is an atrocity.

Woah she was in Panic Room! I had no idea until now.

I don't know about this altered version of George Orwell's book but in his version there was a female lead. Why didn't they just give her that role?

You're missing the silver lining

"The film will be directed by Drake Doremus whose biggest film to his credit is the 2011 romantic drama LIKE CRAZY starring Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, and Jennifer Lawrence."

Drake Doremus a bad thing??? I'm not even going to touch on the adaptation at hand but you're so distraught by this news that you won't even see the silver lining that Drake Doremus is overseeing the project. You stress the word BIGGEST as if the indie film "Like Crazy" wasn't enough for someone like Doremus to

You stress the word BIGGEST as if the indie film "Like Crazy" wasn't enough for someone like Doremus to tackle a project this size (again I'm not even touching on the actual topic) but what's upsetting me is that indie filmmakers will get no faith if it's a project that the pubic deems disastrous (which I'm not disagreeing with) and if that's the case then what's so different than Colin Trevorrow whose earlier indie-flick "Safety Not Guaranteed" was his BIGGEST project to date. Trevorrow's now on JP4, where's the hate on his film? We're not even touching on how Doremus is an awesome inspiration to all non-film students and low budget directors who can hardly afford a Canon 7D. Doremus has ambition and has done something that not many people (with a similar budget) has done. Give the guy some credit for paving another path for indie/student filmmakers like Trevorrow and many others before him. Don't blast the project just because it smells and seems utterly horrible. I'm actually excited to see what the guy can pull with a bigger budget. This is actually great news for the indie community.

I just wish he had picked a better actress -_____-

Picking a shit actress is enough for me to lose faith in the project since she is who audiences will be watching. Hey, it could turn out fine, but the lead is a really important decision on a movie.

Casting doesn't strike me as a bad choice...

If anyone should be safe from the Thought Police, it should be her... That said, I'd love to see a film adaption half as good as some of the other films Orwell inspired, but I doubt this will be it. Neither Hoult or Stewart really have shown the depth or skill to tackle this material... But it's probably the only way this thing is gonna make money. Most fans of the book probably wouldn't see this, no matter who was cast... So you may as well cast somebody who'll convince the braindead

What...the...fuck?
1984 featuring lots of stuttering, sighing, and lip biting; the only talents Stewart is apparently capable of.
