George R.R. Martin’s The Ice Dragon becoming animated film from Warner Bros.

GAME OF THRONES has become a massive cornerstone of pop culture since it debuted on HBO years ago, giving audiences an adult fantasy to binge. The books are also incredibly popular, but author George R.R. Martin has plenty more tales under his belt worthy of the screen treatment. One of those stories is “The Ice Dragon,” a children’s novella that will soon be getting a big screen adaptation.

Deadline got the goods that Warner Bros. Animation Group is teaming with Martin to turn his work into an animated children’s movie, with the author attached as a producer. Nothing else is known about the movie but given the time it takes to make an animated movie – as well as Martin’s track record for delivering on projects – it will probably be a few years before we see it.

"Dragon" represents a much more family-friendly alternative to all the blood, carnage, sex, and carefree nudity of GOT, as I'm sure the (likely) PG animated film will have none of those things. In a nutshell, the story centers on a young girl who must tame a legendary dragon in order to save the world. If that was not enough, here is a plot synopsis of the book via Amazon:

In the world of A Song of Ice and Fire the ice dragon was a creature of legend and fear, for no man had ever tamed one. When it flew overhead, it left in its wake desolate cold and frozen land. But Adara was not afraid. For Adara was a winter child, born during the worst freeze that anyone, even the Old Ones, could remember.

Adara could not remember the first time she had seen the ice dragon. It seemed that it had always been in her life, glimpsed from afar as she played in the frigid snow long after the other children had fled the cold. In her fourth year she touched it, and in her fifth year she rode upon its broad, chilled back for the first time. Then, in her seventh year, on a calm summer day, fiery dragons from the North swooped down upon the peaceful farm that was Adara’s home. And only a winter child―and the ice dragon who loved her―could save her world from utter destruction.

GAME OF THRONES will return for its final season next year.
