Gerald Butler's Mike Banning returns in Angel Has Fallen, possibly saves God

10.26.2016

With a title like ANGEL HAS FALLEN - the third in the "HAS FALLEN" franchise - it better be about Gerald Butler's super Secret Service agent Mike Banning protecting God himself from a terrorist attack. Heck, that premise is only slightly less plausible than the plot of the first two films.

Alas, that is not to be. Instead, according to Deadline, ANGEL HAS FALLEN will be about:

"Mike Banning, who has spent his career keeping American presidents safe. This time, he’s the target. If his attackers can take down half of Washington D.C. with it, all the better. Among those at risk include the President, whose official Air Force One plane is code-named Angel."

I just read that entire synopsis in Don LaFontaine's voice, and it was glorious.

Now, I'm not the biggest fan of this franchise (I actually preferred WHITE HOUSE DOWN to OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN), since I feel it's all needlessly cheap and more than slightly racist (which, to be fair, is a staple of even good action flicks). Also it gets the one major rule of cheesy action movies wrong: the one-liners suck (you know, besides "Go back to fuckerheadistan!" in LONDON HAS FALLEN, which is just the right kind of stupid). I know the films have their fans, and more power to ya, I just hope you guys are more happy with this synposis than I am.

No firm release date has been set for the sequel, but production is slated to start early 2017.

So what say you, fellow JoBlo-ers? Yay or nay?

Extra Tidbit: Angela Bassett only took her part in the HAS FALLEN films, because she always wanted to work alongside Morgan Freeman.

I really liked the first movie, but the sequel was disastrous. I like Butler as an action hero, but (like Statham) he needs a better movie.

So basically a remake of Air Force One but its the traitor-agent doing the heroics? If handled right this could work despite a low production value if they can recreate the tense claustrophobic feel of Executive Decision combined with hard hitting action when the asskicking starts.
LHF for me was a bit of let down (i didn't set my expectations low enough) and the one-take action scene was ok but, for me that gimmick was already getting tired.

However Gerard Butler was awesome and makes the best of the terrible script while everyone else was there out of obligation and you know your movie is in trouble when Morgan Freeman looks bored (remember that scene where he's talking to an obvious Gerard Butler body-double?)
As far fetched as the first movie was, it at least kept a straight-face and sense of charm despite the goofiness which in WHD was intentional (Air Jordans? Seriously??) and one of the reasons I hated that movie and at times found myself rooting for the bad guys.

I actually enjoyed both films. If this is like the first two I'll be happy!

It's nice to see they had a new concept ripped and ready to go. I like the films, I swear, people expect way too much out of some films anymore.

I'm Down

I really enjoyed the first one (if anyone listens to the 'How Did This Get Made' podcast, both Paul Scheer and Jason Mantzoukas have high praise for it), and I caught the second one on on Netflix late last month, and really enjoyed it as well. There is a 'one take' action scene during the climactic battle that actually blew me away with how good it was. But the script, especially for LHF, was not, well, good?

BUT -- I am totally down for a third. Butler's done a great job with this

BUT -- I am totally down for a third. Butler's done a great job with this character, and I think, within the framework they've set up, they really could make a knock out action flick that isn't just purely a guilty pleasure. We shall see!

Yes I know what you are talking about the one shot storm the building via the ally scene is as good as anything ever put on film, period.

It was pretty fantastic; I was dumbfounded, so I had to rewind to watch it again. I had just re-watched Children of Men earlier that week too, so I a high standard in mind. Not sure if it was 'stitched' together, but either way, a surprisingly virtuoso shot. There's a reason why filmmakers don't do things like that too often in action films!

Kinda reminds me of the Taken trilogy. First movie, Daughter gets Taken, Second movie, Mother/Dad gets Taken. Third movie, the Final Takening.... Nobody gets Taken and they just wanna kill Liam Neeson.

It's kind of the same, but now they want Butler out of the equation.

I hope they will continue the cliche-fest of the 2nd one...

- american president was heroic
- french president was arrogant (of course)
- canadian was cool
- Italian was a womanizer
- Japanese president was humble (no escort and gets stuck in traffic jam !!!!)
Looks like a VOD movie to be... Buttler glory days are gone since a long time...

I love how the synopsis tries to advertise the fact that this movie is different, that Butler's character is the now the target. But really, if you read the rest of it...he's going to end up needing to save the President again. haha

Wouldn't call them racist, but they're definitely nationalistic and xenophobic to a degree.
