Get a clearer, more epic look at what Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim has to offer in this new trailer

Apr. 29, 2013by: Niki Stephens

If this new trailer from WonderCon for PACIFIC RIM is meant to blow your f*cking pants off then it does its job.

For those of you who were not impressed by the previous trailers, I have no idea how you will be able to deny the power and awesomeness of this one. Also as someone point out in the strikebacks in a previous article, this is a movie about monsters versus robots...what the hell else are you expecting? I truly love you all, but this is going to be tons of fun and will probably feature several kick ass scenes.

This trailer also shows Charlie Day (FINALLY) and Ron Perlman. I'm going to be honest here. It's going to be hard to watch Day and not think that Charlie from IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY is pretending to be a scientist. The last seconds of this made me wish I could watch the movie right now.

Del Toro had this to say along with the release of the trailer:

"This was originally intended for only WonderCon, but after listening to so many of you asking for more of the movie online, I think it's time for me to show you more footage. Enjoy, my friends!"

Check it out below.

Synopsis: When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Guillermo Del Toro's PACIFIC RIM, starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, and, Clifton Collins, Jr., unleashes its robotic fury on July 12, 2013.

As with most things, the solution to the question "will this movie be good?", can be found in math. In this case the formula is quite simple: (Giant Monsters + Giant Robots) x Giant Monsters fighting Giant Robots = THIS MOVIE WILL FUCKING KICK BALLS!

And since you voted this down three times, I'm gonna go ahead and post once more. This trailer certainly has me excited to check this out. It's high on my list this summer.

I'll tell you why Pacific Rim looks a lot more special than any Transformers film (to me): Guillermo Del Toro. The guy has more imagination in one toenail than Michael Bay has altogether. I fully expect him to go completely nuts with the action and the creature designs, and it certainly looks like he has. I can't wait to see more of these monsters - they look incredible, and the overall "tech" looks wildly cool and creative right down to the smallest detail (a Del Toro trademark).

I hate to add another red bar, but I'm not really feeling the movie from the teasers. Of course, the film may be awesome, but I'm getting the same feeling I had after watching the 'Man of Steel' trailer (and ironically, the 'Superman Returns' trailer) as well as the American 'Godzilla' trailer. Yes, Del Toro is 'brilliant,' but I think his Spanish films are the pieces that most deserve that description.

Yes, Del Toro is 'brilliant,' but I think his Spanish films are the pieces that most deserve that description.

'Pacific Rim,' based on the trailer, has no soul (i.e. no emotion), it's just a lot of effects being thrown at me. Interestingly, the trailers that have (or did) excite me were: 'Skyfall'...'GI Joe' (even though I haven't seen the film)...'Iron Man 3'...and 'Star Trek Into Darkness.'

'Skyfall' was, IMHO, an awesome film. I got the sense that things were really heating up for 007. This is something that we didn't really see with Bond since the Dalton films, when the character was going the more serious, dramatic route.

'GI: Retaliation' I hear wasn't as great as the trailer, but that film's trailer also gets a sense of things getting tight for our heroes. The same with the 'Iron Man 3' trailer, and the 'Star Trek' trailer. With 'Pacific Rim' it just comes off as people in robots fighting gigantic monsters; nothing else. Again, the movie may offer something more, but I'm not getting a sense of 'Oh, my goodness! I have to see this film!' from the trailer. (That feeling is reserved for 'Star Trek').

In regards to Del Toro, the only non-Spanish film I really liked was 'Blade 2' (and even that wasn't a perfect film. I'm not a fan of the 'Hellboy' films, or 'Mimic' (which I thought was poor). On the other hand, 'Pan's Labyrinth' and 'Devil's Backbone' are two of the best films ever made.

Really?... Pt. 2

Transformers are not great movies. What made them fun was to watch someone bring them to life. Not the script or Shea LaPuke. Bernie Mack and Megan Fox were the best parto 0f the first film besides the action. They should have never made 2nd one. If I was 5-8 years old I would probably think the Transformers movies were the greatest thing ever made. But since I'm a grown up I take them for what they are......just mindless [link] more. Pacific Rim doesn't look much more special either.

Awesome!

This look badass for sure, but I don't get how everyone can be on board for this but hate the Transformers franchise. Could it just be a bias against Michael Bay? I mean, del Toro is definitely the superior director of the the two, but I get the same feelings from watching this trailer as I did when I watched the Transformers films. I just don't get the hate, seems a bit blind to meas many of you say regarding Pacific Rim: "I don't care, it's giant robots vs. monsters!"; implying you don't

So why is it a different circumstance when it's Transformers? It's gotta be the monsters, right?

Boy oh boy oh boy. Elba cuts a great figure in military uniform, and the scope and scale of this looks just so vast. There's the added benefit of Guillermo del Toro having a much more vivid imagination than the average big budget tentpole blockbuster director. "2, 500 tons of awesome" is right. As one famous robot said, "LET'S GO ALRRREEEEADYYYY!"

Obvious Logical Flaws

Okay so if we ignore the fact that an explosive device even a conventional one would deliver more kinetic energy to the target then lets say a robot punch. LOL My biggest gripe with the logic is why they have to put people inside the robots. We don't have to put people inside our predator drones, just seems dumb to risk your personnel when you don't have to. They better have a very good explanation for that...and not something like, our wifi signal isn't strong enough to go more than a mile.

The people inside act as the central neurological system for the robot. They aren't just controlling the robot via joystick, they are the robot. Two human minds link together to create the hemispheres of the robot's brain. I don't imagine that kind of data & information can reliably stream via Wi-fi.

Also, we can easily make remote controlled vehicles like predator drones, yet tanks, humvees, fighter jets, etc... all still require people inside. Even the next generation of war vehicles

Derp. I don't know if you have noticed, but the Air Force hasn't replaced all of their pilots with drones. Have you ever seen one dogfight? Never mind the fact that a bipedal robot has way more complicated processes that they would have to automate.

Most of the kinetic energy from a bomb wouldn't be applied to the Kaiju if it's detonated on the surface. Why do you think they drill holes to put dynamite in when blasting mountains instead of sticking it on the surface. A bomb is not going to

Why is he in a wheelchair in the future? Oh wait, wrong CGI shitfest.

Why do they build giant humanoid robots to punch giant monster aliens to death? Out of all the missiles & nukes in the world, we decide to punch them. I guess tickling them to death was off of the table?

Yeah cuz nuking the every monster would be great for the world. But, obviously there are other ways to do it but its a movie so you know sometimes you might have to you know suspend belief and let things happen. And it looks to be far from a CGI shitfest, but you can have your opinion of course.

Truly awesome and epic, this is a mecha fans dream come to life. THIS is how mecha is supposed to be done for live action and I am glad someone finally was able to bring it to life. I do still worry that the story will be on the light side and that we will lose the typical emotional investment we can make in other Del Toro movies, but I hope that I am wrong. However, I have no doubt that the action will be phenomenal. The battling between the robots and aliens already looks outstanding just in

Looks very impressive, I love the colors and how vibrant this looks. The visual design is awesome as well. The CGI is pretty damn good and definitely an upgrade from the first trailer. First big budget, large scale giant robots fighting giant monsters so I don't get the been there done that shit or the comparison to Transformers that I have seen some people make it looks completely different. Also, it was nice seeing some shots of Ron Perlman and Charlie Day.

Evangelion is too complex to make a live action film out of. Even the new anime films are very complex and wouldn't translate well to live action. They would be better off adapting something more straightforward like Gundam before they try to delve in NGE.

So how does that make us a "cheap sell"? Del Toro is a brilliant filmmaker who is now taking on this massive project so we're excited. By saying that if any other director was behind it that we wouldn't be as excited is actually the opposite of "cheap sell".

I don't think the film at all appears to be a quality sci-fi adventure, especially from someone as talented as Del Toro, but rather a bit over the top and an exercise in poor CGI. It could certainly turn out to be a good film, but from the looks of the footage I've seen thus far, it looks incredibly lame. IMHO

If you're into mecha action, this is solid gold. The CGI actually looks quite fantastic and it looks like Del Toro has taken a lot of time figuring out how to make the robots work on a mechanical level, i.e. how they operate, how pilots interact with them, how they are able to get in and out of battle, etc. I can't comment on the story or characters, but Del Toro managed to infuse a great deal of emotional into something like Hellboy, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt. Most of all, this is an attempt at something new, a type of genre that hasn't really been explored before in live action cinema, more specifically Hollywood. Yes, we've seen Transformers, but that kind of mecha is really something else entirely. This could pave the way for other mecha series adaptations, such as something like Mechwarrior or Gundam.

The previous trailers were just CGI robots vs CGI monsters. Not really interesting if there's nothing else around.

Where has there been giant monsters and giant robots fighting on this scale with this budget in Hollywood. I am genuinely curious. It is not even comparable to Transformers or Battleship which is the usual bullshit that I read it getting compared to.

Been there done that? The only been there done that I can think of would be Godzilla fighting Mechagodzilla, or the god awful Godzilla vs Gigan with Jet Jaguar. Maybe Mecha Kong?

I have a feeling this will be WAY better than a Toho Production. (Even though I do own a lot of those films, Love me some Toho Godzillas!)

I assumed this film would be awesome. This trailer has done a great job of convincing me I was right.
S'gonna be a great summer for action blockbusters.

Great Trailer

The film looks incredible. Can't wait.

"Today, we are canceling the Apocalypse!"
