Get a first look at the amazing ensemble of upcoming spy flick 355

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

We’ve seen plenty of men lead spy thrillers, from Tom Cruise and Matt Damon in the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE and BOURNE movies, to a bunch of blokes playing Bond over the years. However, we don’t often see women playing ass-kicking spies in gritty flicks (does CHARLIE’S ANGELS count as “gritty”?), but that will all change with the thriller 355. The new action flick will assemble a group of amazing women, and they are all united in the first cast picture of them together at Cannes.

Actress Jessica Chastain, who came up with the idea for 355, took to Instagram yesterday to unveil the cast photo of all five women who will kick every ass. The cast includes Chastain, Penelope Cruz (MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS), Fan Bingbing (X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST), Marion Cotillard (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, INCEPTION) and Lupita Nyong'o (BLACK PANTHER). There’s no point in asking if I can die and go to heaven now because, clearly, I'm already there.

The movie is being sold as a hard-edged spy thriller involving several spies having to rise above political differences and suspicions about each other to save the day. Think THE AVENGERS if it was all different versions of Black Widow. Chastain came up with the idea when working with the movie’s director, Simon Kinberg (script by Theresa Rebeck), on X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX and spoke about it with Deadline last week.

I had so much fun working on The Help that I always wanted to do another female ensemble film. I love the Bourne movies, the Mission: Impossible films, and wondered why, except for Charlie’s Angels, there hadn’t been a true female ensemble action-thriller spy film. That got my wheels going, along with the idea of casting actresses from all over the world to truly make it an international project. I realized the incredible creative freedom we would have with that. I brought the idea to Simon, told him about the actresses I was thinking of, and he was so sweet. He said, "I want to do it with you."

The actresses shined at Cannes (where the movie is seeking distribution deals), and journalist Rebecca Keegan tweeted some nice details from actress Lupita Nyong’o and hinted at a fight scene to end all fight scenes.

This movie sounds tremendous, and I hope we get to see it soon. Chastain has talked about how this will be a collaborative experience between all the actresses, with them all contributing ideas to their characters and roles in the movie. With men dominating this kind market it will refreshing to see such strong voices throw their hats into the rings, proving they can do just as much cool shit on motorcycles as Tom Cruise.
