Get in the game! Full-length trailer for Ender's Game starring Harrison Ford and Asa Butterfield arrives

Aug. 6, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The final trailer for ENDER'S GAME has arrived, featuring a lot more action and sci-fi mayhem than we've seen so far for the adaptation of Orson Scott Card's famed novel. Starring Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, and Hailee Steinfeld, the Gavin Hood directed film looks like an epic-scale sci-fi pic, complete with alien invasions, space battles, and some fine scene chewing amongst aged actors. It's a much more engaging trailer than the teaser and may well be the one that clinches a ticket from those in doubt.

Get in the game:

Here's the synopsis:

70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion.

This is the same trailer shown at Comic Con from what I remember and director Gavin Hood was extremely excited to share it while there. I was struck by how humble and thankful he was to be working on the film and he seemed very proud of the end result. Despite all the author controversy, I think ENDER'S GAME is taking shape as a potentially great sci-fi flick, hopefully one that doesn't crumble under the baggage of failed book adaptations.

ENDER'S GAME, starring Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis, and Abigail Breslin is set to start playing on November 1, 2013.

Hey Paul, what makes you chose the order that you list the cast in? I would assume Ender is the star/lead character in the movie, the poster lists his name first but yet 2 times you put Harison Ford first? Just wondering.

Trailer didn't do much to add any interest, it reminded me that it's the same director as X-Men Orgins: Wolverine... At one point with old Harrison narrating and the space war scenes I started to wonder if Disney might make the new Star Wars have a similar look and feel,

Also... If this does well and they greenlight a sequel will it be Enders Shaddow?

meh

I liked the scenes featuring Ford and Kingsley debating what seems to be a moral dilemma of some sort and Viola Davis is always good, but the film just still doesn't interest me. It looks very formulaic and in a bad way and the script, at least what we get here, is awful. I felt like I was watching a cross between The Last Airbender and Wing Commander.

Sorry

Extending the trailer didn't make this more watchable. Bad source material, and (sigh) I'm sorry, but that boy can't act.

The book sucked so I guess this will too. Harrison Ford doesn't even try any more. What a shame.

Don't usually complain about trailers giving too much away (usually I can figure it out even when they try to hide it)...but having read the books, I can honestly say they are spoiling the crap out of this movie.

Looks to me that they're just adapting it a different way. The audience will know that Ender is fighting the real war, but Ender will not. That creates some interesting inter-character tension (which you can see between Mazer, Graff, and Anderson in the trailer) among the fleet officers in charge of training the kids. Sure, it'll not be the same reveal as the end of the book, but will be interesting in its own right to watch unfold.

Love the book! And I like Harrison here, as well as the kid. I think they're showing you all the "spoilers" in the trailer cause they've adapting the story a bit. I'm totally on board if that's the case, IMO there is nothing more boring than a line for line book movie photocopy. Especially since half the main audience of this should know the twist already.

Looks good, nice to see to the comeback of the Sci-Fi genre (with this and the upcoming star wars chapters) after a long absence.

You're right. IIRC, Hood's screenplay is based on the original one Card wrote and Card said that he wrote it where everything was out there from the beginning. I think it's stupid because it defeats the purpose of a twist if you already know what it is.

I also thought it was pretty stupid to show Mazer Rackham too. I felt the reveal that he is still alive was a pretty big one also.

Just because the audience will know that Ender is fighting the real war doesn't mean the movie is automatically ruined. It just creates different tensions among the characters that will hopefully make it compelling in its own way. You trade the end of the book (which anybody who read it could see coming since there was only like 30 pages left in the book anyway) for more character development and different tensions. Like, for those that haven't read the book, they might think that Ender could

Your point is a valid one, but we'll see how it all turns out. I'm optimistic about the tradeoff.

It hurts my eyes brain to see actors the likes of Ben Kingsley, Harrison Ford and Viola Davis in movies like this. On the other hand; mansions and BWM's aren't cheap, so good for them.

Asa Butterfield is just as annoying as his name.

I have to admit, I thought the same thing. However his "bored as fuck" tone is more Air Force One than Bladerunner.

Generic trailer music and the Inception froghorn creeping in, but I liked that dissolve of the eye to the spaceship porthole. I agree with miguel that they're going to have something of a task on their hands selling the idea that an army of kids is our best hope, but so far it looks okay and I am looking forward to seeing two legends, Ben Kingsley and Harrison Ford, play off each other.

To be clear, these genius-level kids train in a kind of 3D laser tag room in the initial stages of their training. That's what those spacesuit looking costumes are for. They later command fleets in very elaborate video game simulations. At no point do children fight with the aliens in something like hand-to-hand combat. Yes, that would be absurd.

I doubt we'll see any in the movie anyway... In the books the "Buggers" are only seen in videos from the 1st war and not even described in detail.

I know I'm gonna get downvoted, but I just can't get into this movie. It looks beautiful and interesting, but the notion in this sci-fi world, that children are the only "soldiers" capable of vanquishing aliens, is absurd.

If I'm remembering correctly though, these kids are genetically altered. Mentally they're way more advanced than then past soldiers. That doesn't seem so absurd considering the scope of technology on display in the trailer.

They're not just normal children. They're genetically engineered humans groomed from a cellular level to be superior in every way.

Okay, I guess that's reasonable. And they are only young because of the aging process during the attacks? Or is there some sort of limit to their age? I guess what I'm asking is, why are children the only genetically altered humans?

miguel_montes- Those are good questions but to answer too many of them would actually take away from the plot elements of the story for those who are unfamiliar. What I could say though is the reason they're so young is because Earth felt it was blindsided by the alien attacks the first time so they've decided to get a head start by preparing a fleet of military genius's who will be ready to defend earth and Ender Wiggin is Einstein and General Patton rolled into one. That's about as much as

That's about as much as you really want to know before seeing the film. In the book I believe he's only 6 years old so making him 12"isn" adds some credibility. I would highly recommend picking up the book. It's a fun, well written fast read.

I also want to point out that they are not the ones doing the fighting. They are trained from an early age to strategize and command the ones doing the fighting and not actually taking place in the battles themselves.

One of the children is genetically altered in the books. The rest are just hand-picked from all the children on earth as the smartest, quickest thinking, tactical minds. As children, they learn more, learn faster, and adapt more quickly than adults do. Whether that would work in real life is an interesting question, but let's be clear that the children are commanding the fleets like a video game, not fighting the aliens in hand-to-hand combat. The suits you see them wearing are for a zero-G
