Get rich, get laid, have fun; Trailer for Dwayne Johnson's Ballers on HBO

04.10.2015

Dwayne Johnson is the latest film-star to make the leap to small-screen with Ballers, a new HBO series from Steve Levinson which will be premiering on June 21st. In it, Johnson plays a former football star by the name of Spencer Strasmore who mentors other current and former players in the business of football and living large. HBO dropped off the first trailer for the series, check it out!

Getting some major Entourage vibes here but I'm already looking forward to watching Rob Corddry bounce off Dwayne Johnson; some great potential for comedy there. At first glance it didn't seem like it would be my type of show but dammit if The Rock doesn't make me want to check it out; that man is one of the hardest working people in Hollywood, it's crazy. The series also stars Omar Benson Miller, John David Washington, Donovan Carter, Troy Garity, Jazmyn Simon, and Arielle Kebble; and yes that is feature-film director Peter Berg making an appearence, he also directed the pilot.

A synopsis for Ballers:

Looking at the lives of former and current football players, the show follows former superstar Spencer Strasmore (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) as he gets his life on track in retirement while mentoring other current and former players through the daily grind of the business of football.

Ballers starts off its 10-episode debut season on June 21st, right after the season premiere of True Detective.

Seems like an Entourage rip off. With The Rock. I'm in. Lets celebrate what it means to be young, rich, famous, and hulk sized!

Hedonism. Only hedonism. Why do we celebrate this? Looks to be a very good performance from The Rock though.

So they took the concept of Entourage and changed it from actor to athletes, with the Ari Gold character becoming the main focus. I'm willing to give this a chance, mainly because The Rock is in it, but I hope it differentiates itself from Entourage.

Denzel's son is in this?!

Color me intrigued, I want to see what the young man brings to the table. Maybe even if the show gets more seasons Denzel might show up as his sons characters father down the road as a former player. The show has my interest.

The Rock, Jack Black, etc. wow HBO is pumping up the star power in their series. Is this the future? A-Listers headlining awards bait in the fall, blockbusters in the spring/summer and their own 10-13 episode per season series every year. That's 3 months on the series (Ballers), 2-4 months on the blockbuster (Furious/Hercules/San Andreas), 1-2 months on the awards bait movie (Snitch/Pain and Gain), 3-4 months of promotions, leaving 1-3 months in St. Bart's. Not bad.

That's actually a really great observation, except in what universe would Pain and Gain be considered awards bait?

Absolutely awards bait, for The Rock's acting level and filmography. Snitch is a drama with some thrilling elements and Pain and Gain is a very dark comedy more along the lines of a Coen Bros. film (Burn After Reading) than an action movie. In both films, The Rock relies on his character's personalities to carry the film, not set pieces. I think there's a world where he'd be mentioned for consideration in supporting categories of certain awards...Best Supporting in a Comedy or Musical Film for

I agree with americanmoviefan. Pain & Gain was pretty good, it might not be Oscar bait, but I could have seen it getting some nominations in the comedy categories at the Golden Globes. Rock and Wahlberg carried that on character alone and it's definitely not an action flick.
