Get your first good look at Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander

Jan. 12, 2011by: Mike Sampson

While we've seen what Rooney Mara looks like as Lisbeth Salander in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO via crudely taken paparazzi photos, we've never seen anything proper. That's about to change as Mara sat for a W Magazine photoshoot, which was overseen by director David Fincher. The photos accompany an article on the making of the movie and profiling Fincher himself. (Somewhat surprisingly, the article is rather light on Mara herself.)

While much of it details Fincher's work on previous films, there are some nuggets on DRAGON TATTOO:

The script, which captures the novel’s bleak tone (its original Swedish title was Men Who Hate Women), was written by Academy Award winner Steven Zaillian, who wrote Schindler’s List, and it departs rather dramatically from the book. Blomkvist is less promiscuous, Salander is more aggressive, and, most notably, the ending—the resolution of the drama—has been completely changed. This may be sacrilege to some, but Zaillian has improved on Larsson—the script’s ending is more interesting.

This is shocking material for a major studio like Sony. In one of the pivotal scenes, taken directly from Larsson, Salander punishes the man who raped her by raping him with a large prosthetic penis, and then tattooing his torso with the words i am a rapist pig.

So yeah. The film is released this December but not exactly something you want to take mom and dad to before Christmas dinner. Click on the photo of Mara/Salander below to head to W Magazine and read the article for yourself.

Extra Tidbit: I think I'm the only one on the planet who didn't like these books.

You guys have got to be fucking kidding me. What's so great about Noomi Rapace? She sulks her way through the entire trilogy, you can hardly call it acting, and she looks like a member of Tokyo Hotel. The series is originally a fucking mini series made for Swedish TV, so they cut 40 minutes from every part release it in movie theaters across the world and you schnooks call it a masterpiece. Millenium is 3 extended and glorified episodes of Wallander. All this fucking whining is an insult to the

P.S.
Loving Mara's look, a great mix of sexy and goth.

Cant wait!

afer seein the 2 swedish movies and being really disappointed (especially with number 2) and realising Noomi rapace is a shit actress I have been eagerly anticipating these films I think Rooney mara is the perfect choice her look is more suited to this where Noomi just looked really sily and laughable. My only gripe is I pray that Fincher does all 3 cos seriously while i liked the original the second one felt so differently and they need one director to keep this vision instead of just handing

She doesn't even come close to the original. Noomi makes this style look much hotter. Not sure why we need a "remake" of a movie that is like two years old but what do I know.

It's not a remake of the recent movie. It is a new adaptation of the book.

Wow

Don't really care about the movie, even though I'll probably see it cause I'm Fincher's fan slave. Hey, I don't know bout you guys but these pics turn me on, she's hot.

It doesn't even look like her. Its a pretty big undertaking for everyone involved. But, they all are very talented, and with Fincher at the helm, I have faith. Remember when he made "The Game"? That sucked.

I'm liking this cast

I just finished the first two books and have only seen the first movie. I must say that as awesome as Noomi was, Roony physically looks alot more like what I imagined. As far as the rest of the cast Plummer, Robin Wright, Craig, and Joely Richardson. They all fit the bill i felt alot better tahn the original film. Throw in a bit of Fincher and Reznor and I think this might destroy the movie. Besides they left out alot of minor plot points I enjoyed.

Im actually a bit impressed with how she looks. Not sure about all the criticism. I don't know what everyone expects, but I assume the majority of people with negative comments all ready have it in their head to dislike this film. I liked the original, not to the extent of some, but I liked it. I can't comment on the believability of Mara's portrayal until I see the film, but I think that she looks fine for the part, not at all like she's "trying too hard" as some might think. Trying to hard

Trying to hard would be overpiercing, over tattooing, and over doing it with the hair. This looks relatively tame, which is good. It's not overbearing, which, I must say Noomi was a little.

I really don't know what to think. First photo is certainly better one, but the second looks like a model shoot. And Noomi Rapace was perfect Lisbeth, by the acting and way she looked, and that's gonna be tough act to follow. I haven't seen The Social Network or Elm Street remake, so I can't say anything about Mara's acting.

I ready to give this film a chance because source material is great, Fincher is capable director and Daniel Craig just might work as Blomkvist.

Better than I thought...

...But we all know the Nooms version could easily beat the shit out of this version. The second pic just looks like a typically esoteric, hideous supermodel photo we'll never understand. Either way, I'm sure the film itself will be better than the original. Would've been awesome if Rapace was just cast in this...

Still going to reserve judgment about Rooney Mara since I haven't been overly impressed with her so far, though Fincher does get pretty incredible roles out of people. However, I do like that it's not just going to be a straight-up remake of the novel, and they're going to try and do something a little different. As far as the books go, they didn't blow me away, but they weren't complete shit. The darker tones and themes, plus Lisbeth being a pretty badass chick warranted me reading them all

Wow!

I've never seen an actress (or a director for that matter) TRY SO HARD! I mean wow, she looks like that sweet girl from school who went to a party one night, smoked weed and drank 2 bottles of beer and thinks she's tough shit. It's pathetic. This girl can NOT act (elm street and social network can back me up there) Fincher has LOST it after Zodiac. Disappointed indeed

I'm going to take the extra tidbit a step further

Was there anyone else who didn't like The Social Network? I thought the dialogue was incredibly fake, the characters were terrible and not worthy of spending an entire movie with, Fincher's directing was over-the-top and distracting, and the story wasn't very interesting (which is why I guess Fincher made this dramatic effort to try to make it exciting with his showy directing. The only part of this movie I liked was Rooney Mara. In the opening scene when she walked away at the restaurant

In the opening scene when she walked away at the restaurant and I was stuck with Jesse Eisenberg, I thought to myself, I don't want to spend an entire movie with this character. I'd rather see a movie about Rooney Mara's character and she didn't invent Facebook.

I'm glad they're changing it up a bit. It would be hard to get excited about a carbon copy of the book or Swedish movie, and I have a lot of faith in Fincher and Zaillian.

I like these books but the second one is better than the first. Dragon Tattoo is 700+ pages and doesn't get good until page 245 on. I don't like them making changes, the swedish film adaptation did that and it sucked. Also, I have no idea what changes to the ending they could possibly make but it already fealt bleak enough.

I'm a fan of Rooney Mara but I hate these books

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is vastly overrated in my opinion. I thought it was complete garbage. And I also find the character of Lisbeth Salander to be very uninteresting, she's basically a cartoon character in the midst of the completely bland male characters, which is why she stands out. I am, however, impressed by Rooney Mara as an actress. She's very likeable, talented, and hot. I think this role will obviously get her a lot of recognition but I'm more excited for whatever

From the look of Mara alone, I'd say I'm intrigued. Before The Social Network, like many people I thought, "Facebook movie wtf?" and Fincher of course delivered an excellent film. So I'm not going to damn this movie just yet because I thought the Swedish film was great and Noomi Rapace was incredible as Lisbeth. I'll keep my mouth shut and wait to see.

Not the only one...

I didn't like 'em either. In fact, the first one (and only one I made it thru) is nothing more than a long, drawn out, rated X version of a Scooby Doo episode. I knew Old Man Winters was the bad guy from the moment he leaped off the page.
Bor-ing. And no Scooby snacks to boot.

The book is not about trying to discover who did what. Its about the feminist message, its about a context. Sure its not that well-written, especially if you read the American translation, which is apparently the worst translation of this book.
