Get your first official look at Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth in Gotham

03.24.2014

British actor Sean Pertwee has joined the ranks of fellow thesps Michael Caine, Michael Gough, and soon-to-be Jeremy Irons (in BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN) to portray Alfred Pennyworth, the resourceful and dedicated butler to Bruce Wayne/Batman. Pertwee will portray the character for Fox's Gotham series, where he will act as the protector of the recently orphaned Bruce Wayne (played by David Mazouz) and today we have our first official look at Pertwee, playing an obviously younger version of the character.

Alfred's description for the show is:

A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Pennyworth has loyally served the Wayne family. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, hes fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne the boy who will eventually become Batman.

It's been cool seeing this develop and equally cool seeing the various reveal roll in as they shoot the pilot for Gotham. It's still up in the air whether or not it will make the grade in terms of being a quality show, but based on the casting and set pics, the odds seem to be stacking in its favor. Definitely looking forward to seeing a trailer for this one.

Gotham is set to debut this fall on Fox.

Okay, so why does the show even need Alfred and a young Bruce Wayne? Wouldn't that be a bit of a distraction in this non-Batman cop show type? Or is kid Bruce helping to solve crime? Or is the show just a bunch of random people doing random stuff? Even then a child Bruce Wayne is nothing more than buildup to something that will never happen on the show... I really fail to see the point in any of this.

Just as smooveluv has pointed out, it's Three Junior! The TARDIS certainly gives the Batmobile a run for its money.

I like the concept for the character

I always thought Alfred Pennyworth should have been ex-SAS: given how crime-ridden Gotham is, why wouldn't a wealthy family like the Waynes have a butler with high-level military training? But, since most Americans likely don't know what the SAS is, then ex-marine is fine too.

I hope this show lives up to the hype.

That was my favorite era of DW. Jon Pertwee was WICKED MAN - I have all his era's figures! Tom Baker is my best Doctor and David Tennant is number 2, Pertwee is number 3 but his run was my favorite run of all.

A thought -

This show is a bit off to me - if Gordon is fighting all these villains (before they become batman's villains) then wouldn't Gordon be better than Batman? When batman finally appears, Jim can just say "dude I have been fighting these guys for 10 years - I don't need your help." It's a batman show where Gordon is batman! I mean we know Gordon will win against them - he becomes commissioner, so we know he does his job well - so who needs batman. Anyway, just a thought.

that's not quite what's happening here. the main "villain" of the series is the gangster Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), and the characters from the batman rogues gallery are more on the periphery. the supervillains that batman fights appear in part because of batman. Gordon doesn't need to systemically fix the city for his rise through the ranks to be plausible and for him to have some success (think about all the characters that move through the ranks of Baltimore PD in The Wire, yet the city doesn't really get better)

Ya that's a good point. I was just thinking out loud. Also how can a pre-penguin not be short and fat tho.
