Get your shine box- Goodfellas the TV show in the works

Jan. 10, 2012by: Alex Riviello

AMC's got the mob on its side. Deadline is reporting that the cable network, already home to such fantastic shows as "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad", will be getting a TV series based on GOODFELLAS.

Jorge Zamacona ("Homicide: Life on the Street") will co-write the TV series with Nicholas Pileggi, who wrote both "Wiseguy" and the script for "Goodfellas". They will executive produce with GOODFELLAS producer Irwin Winkler and his son David. Warner Bros's cable TV arm Warner Horizon Television is producing the series.

Those casting directors are going to have their work cut out for them, though- how do you hope to top the De Niro/Pesci/Liotta trifecta? Still, I don't have to point out how huge of a deal this is for AMC. GOODFELLAS is still considered one of the greatest mob movies of all time- hell, greatest movies of all time, period- and its name guarantees an audience for the show.

More as we hear it. For now, this reminds me that I really need to pick up the blu-ray of GOODFELLAS...

I can see this just being a mob story on its' own and not using any of the characters from Goodfellas. It wouldn't make much sense if they did anyway; it's not like they could do a better job than the movie and it pretty much covered those character's entire lives (the interesting parts anyway). It could go either way. A mob show on AMC sounds great considering almost all of their shows are superb, but they've also been screwing with them lately.

Somebody go down to Warner Bros...

ring the buzzer and say "Superintendent, I want you to know there is a WHORE in your building!."

Will the show be funny? Funny like a clown? Will it amuse me? Will it make me laugh? How will it be funny?

I find it odd that they're doing it now, 21 to 22 years after the movie's release. And yeah, how are you even gonna link it to Goodfellas? That's a true story, so it's not like there's any kind of "mythos" to expand upon.

Friday Night Lights (the movie) was a true story that turned into a TV series so I guess goodfellas can too. Two completely different genres, but I guess they can do it. I don't care about historical accuracy so much as I want it to be a good show.

Might be why Nicholas Pileggi is involved. Might be a more in-depth look.
