Ghostbusters 3 may begin filming in Spring 2014, possibly with Jonah Hill and Emma Stone

11.08.2013

GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is a project that I am sure people would love to stop hearing about. Sure, it would be fantastic if we finally got a true sequel featuring Dan Akyroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson, but the chances of that are slim to none. We already know Bill Murray is not coming back but that is not stopping Akyroyd and Sony from trying to make it happen.

Last we heard, GHOSTBUSTERS 3 was being rewritten for the third time but the financial troubles at Sony were causing delays. Now, we have two tidbits of news that, while not ironclad, definitely make it seem like the movie is finally moving forward.

Coming Soon reports that an unnamed Sony executive cited the film may shoot in Cleveland, Ohio.

"More movie projects are on the way. One being the sequel to "Ghostbusters" as Sony has penciled in spring 2014 date to start shooting the third installment here in Cleveland."

This rumor comes on the heels that two roles have been offered to Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. Whether they have accepted is unknown. If the rumors are true, they will be playing the parts of Jeremy and Anna. Are these new Ghostbusters or secondary characters? That remains to be seen.

GHOSTBUSTERS 3 was drafted be Gene Stupinsky, Lee Eisenberg, and Etan Cohen. According to Aykroyd, the plot of the third film will be something like this:

"It's based on new research that's being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University... Basically, there's research being done that I can say that the world or the dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence, length, height, width and time, become threatened by some of the research that's being done. Ghostbusters -- new Ghostbusters -- have to come and solve the problem."

If shooting locations can be pinned down in Ohio and shooting does in fact begin next year, that could mean that GHOSTBUSTERS 3 may hit theaters in an already jam-packed 2015.

Jonah Hill? Meh. I get it if he is a secondary character like Rick Morranis was.
Im thinking Jason Sudeikis and Bill Hader would fit well as new Ghostbusters. I think Sudeikis shares some similarities to Bill Murray in the early days of his career (he at least has the wise-ass part down).

also what has Bill Murray done since Zombieland?

... very little. he's played Badger in Fantastic Mr Fox... a film no one saw... and will probably NEVER see.
sure he's busy doing The Monuments Men right now, but look at 2010, 2011 and 2012.. actually let's not look at 2011 since he didnt do anything.... he did star in Hyde Park on the Hudson... again... did anybody see that? no.
Now... with that said.... can Ghostbusters III survive without Bill Murray? YES but NOT with Jonah Hill in the lead role.... nope.
Emma Stone could carry that

Emma Stone could carry that movie on her own.... I'd still love to see Weaver, Moranis, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis come in as Cameos

isn't EVERY year jam packed with movie blockbusters?

2015 isnt any more or any less "jam packed" than any other year... yes it's got lots of heavy hitters like Star Wars, Avengers Age of Ultron and many others but Ackroyd and Sony have to understand that this flick has been in development hell since oh... what? 1989? and WHO put it into Development Hell? Sony. so putting this up against STAR WARS and AGE of ULTRON is.. their own damn fault.... not ours.
and personally a third sequel aint going to hold it's own against STAR WARS 9... really?

it might catch on AFTER... like when it finally hits Blu-ray... but really? who's going to see this one over STAR WARS? nobody.... lets be realistic.

Actually, a 2015 release date would be perfect timing.

Remember that one episode of World of the Psychic? About the end of the world? Kevin Dunn's prediction was almost right about it happening on New Years Eve. Chloe Webb's prediction on the other hand, was for Feb. 2016. What is she's almost right too. Her prediction had to do with aliens, but I'm sure that be changed into a ghost/paranormal plot easily. What if both guests predicted the next two big events for the Ghostbusters.

As for casting, It would be great if they would cast some SNL

As for casting, It would be great if they would cast some SNL alumni, like previously mentioned. Either to Join the Originals or to take over completely. Maybe Bill Hader, Tracy Morgan, Will Forte, Chris Parnell and/ or Keenan Thompson. Hell, even the guys from Broken Lizard, Just no Apatow guys please.

Dude...

Watch Ghostbusters again... and tell me it's not a waste of time without Bill Murray. I just saw it last night. Aykroyd is convinced that it's an ensemble piece and that other characters can carry a whole film. Dan is in denial. It will be like the Big Lebowski without... the Dude.

Agree with Anomaly7

It almost feels like the right time for a new generation of Ghostbusters. Too much time has gone by for Murray to be anything like he was in the first two films anyway. He's just really old and really cranky now. The guy used to be funny, and FUN. Why does he have to be such a hard-ass? It's like his biggest role ever, arguably the one he will be remembered for above all others. Why not just do the fans a favor and be in the damn thing? Is it so hard a decision? "Oooh look he must be an amazing actor because he has sense to not do ghostbusters 3" Rubbish! Whatever...in my opinion the franchise doesn't really need him anymore. I wouldn't mind seeing Dana Barret again though. Sigourney Weaver is not so self-consumed that she would refuse to participate.

I Knew It...

The second they said a new generation of Ghostbusters someone was gonna go after Jonah Hill. I have no idea how this guy gets work, he's a perfect example of "it's who you know."
Akyroyd has been trying so hard to get this made for years and I'm sorry, but without Murray, it will suck....and the suck factor will double if Jonah Hill is involved.

This news at least made me imagine what a Judd Apatow directed Ghostbusters movie would look like. Crass humor, awkward moments, and a lot of scenes involving ghosts humping each other.

Can they just do the movie already

Akyroyd has nothing better to do than Ghostbusters, every time the talk dies down a few months later it's back up again. Just film the movie and let everyone hate it.

Really not feeling this. There comes a time when trying to recapture the magic of a franchise just feels futile. For Ghostbusters it was the chemistry between its actors, many of whom were really good friends even off-screen. I would've loved a sequel even ten years ago, but not having their biggest star on board is already a big knock against this thing. Then there's the fact that the first sequel wasn't so great. If they're gonna have new recruits, I'd rather they draft from former SNL

If they're gonna have new recruits, I'd rather they draft from former SNL castmembers on the rise. Hill and Stone are both very talented and funny, but they're also stars who could even eclipse the original Ghostbusters (what was the last thing Aykroyd did that was memorable? Ernie Hudson's a character actor, and Harold Ramis is most famous as a director). Now, it could still be a good movie. But I'm not crossing my fingers about it.

I'd love another Ghostbusters. Like Star Trek, I feel the concept is strong enough to survive using different "generations." Nobody will ever beat the original cast, but I wouldn't mind a new group doing the next movie. But I'd prefer it not to include Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. Replace them with Sam Rockwell and Isla Fisher, and you have something worthy of the ghostbusters name.

I know a lot of people are hating it because there is no Murray but I can't judge a movie on if it will be good or not based on just who they may or may not cast. I will reserve any judgement until a trailer or at least a plot outline is revealed... There has been plenty of movies, not necessarily sequels, that were hated on before anyone even saw it because of the cast that ended up great.

I like Jonah Hill and Emma Stone, but casting them just seems like a cash grab to get this film going. Without Murray being involved this won't get my money or interest.
