Gillian Anderson joins the cast of the Starz series American Gods

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

For those unfamiliar with the Neil Gaiman book of the same name, American Gods tells a story of a war brewing between old and new gods. The traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world are steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. The protagonist, Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), a conman but in reality one of the older gods on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities. Starz has just cast someone who will serve as the voice of those new gods, and that’s Gillian Anderson.

As Deadline reports, Media functions as the n gods’ public face and sales representative by taking the form of various iconic celebrities. She lives off public attention and worship, spinning stories in whatever direction best suits her. For those of you who enjoy Anderson generally taking on the role of the “good guy”, this should be a fun turn for the actress. Anderson joins a hell of a cast that includes Emily Browning, Peter Stormare and Crispin Glover. While there’s no set release for the series, it looks like they’re having no problems finding the right people to portray these enigmatic gods!
