The X-Files Gillian Anderson

The X-Files panel at this past week's New York Comic Con must have been a bittersweet experience for fans in attendance, as the unveiling of the trailer for the series' upcoming eleventh season was accompanied by star Gillian Anderson saying that this season may be the last time she ever plays Dana Scully.

According to Screen Rant, when Anderson was asked if she was open to returning to the role beyond this season, she replied,

No, no, I think this will be it for me."

The reason she came back for this season is becase

…it felt like it wasn't over. It didn't feel like we necessarily delivered everything the fans were expecting of us last time."

Anderson went on to say that she didn't know if she would miss Scully once she shuts the door on the X-Files world, bring an end to that "maybe one more" feeling that has been lingering ever since the show went off the air the first time back in 2002. She said it may take a few years to find out if she misses Scully or not.

So hopefully fans will enjoy season 11, because it may be the last time they see Anderson working on The X-Files.

Anderson's co-stars in the upcoming season include David Duchovny, Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Annabeth Gish, Robbie Amell, Lauren Ambrose, Barbara Hershey, Brian Huskey, and Karin Konoval.

Set to run for 10 episodes, The X-Files season 11 will air on Fox sometime in 2018.
