Go and see Once

I have to admit that I have never even heard of the movie ONCE, but directorial powerhouse, Steven Spielberg commented to USA Today recently that:

"A little movie called Once gave me enough inspiration to last the rest of the year."

This is a real sweet story, I've been flitting through the IMDb.com comments and reviews and pretty much everything that has been said about the movie has been complimentary. Here is a quick description of the flick: A modern-day musical about a busker and an immigrant and their eventful week, as they write, rehearse and record songs that tell their love story. To be honest, I had always thought myself the kind of person who would laugh at musicals, but my ex-girlfriend got me to watch the first half of GREASE and I couldn't stop. I also ended up watching RENT and HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL over that same summer and I have to believe that if Spielberg loves ONCE, then it has to be at least equal to HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL. Sure, it might not have that awesome part at the start where Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens fall in love for no apparent reason other than that they are singing to each other, but it's Irish and Spielberg likes it. Give it a chance, ey?
Extra Tidbit: Director John Carney was once a member of the band 'The Frames', for whom lead actor Glen Hansard is the frontman.

Agreed

As much as I'm glad this site is finally plugging a non-action indie like Once, I'm totally with the post by realhorrorshow.

one of my favorites this year, glad to see the beard and you guys plugging it, it really deserves an audience. also, this is coming from a guy that generally hates musicals.

This film is amazing

Nice that Senor Spielbergo is on the bandwagon and helping get the word out on this flick... It's a great movie. Saw it twice ("once" twice - get it?), bought the soundtrack and even went to their show at the El Ray. One of the best live shows I've ever been to. The lead, Glen Hansard, comes back to L.A. with his band The Frames in September and again in November. Look 'em up on Myspace too... On top of everything, they're really friendly, nice people!

I'm going to see this movie tomorrow. I have to drive almost an hour to get to the theater it's playing at, but I think it'll be worth it. I listened to a few of the songs and they're beautiful.

GREAT FLICK!

I love my films full of blood, guts, babes and guns, but this was by far one of my favorite films of the year thus far with an amazing soundtrack. It's not really a musical, it's a movie about musicians, like EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS or WALK THE LINE.

I saw this flick a couple of months back when it was initially released and I'm going to agree with Spielberg because it was truly the most beautiful movie of the year and one of the most entertaining. For a movie that cost only 100 grand it beats many big budget pieces if trash. ONCE rules go and see it!
