Godzilla director Gareth Edwards talks about how he intends for his movie to be realistic

GODZILLA is coming, and by all accounts director Gareth Edwards is exactly the man who should be guiding Toho’s main monster back to the big screen.  So what’s going to make Edwards’ effort different from that which came before?

I’ve always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him. I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine ‘If this really happened, what would it be like?’ I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film.  Which is an intention I think we all can appreciate if for no other reason than its sheer novelty in regards to the source material.  And who knows – perhaps after GODZILLA releases on May 16th, 2014, we’ll all be sitting around in our living rooms debating how we’d survive Godzilla rather than how we’d survive a zombie apocalypse.

Edwards also called the fan reaction to the footage shown at Comic Con “fantastic” (a description of which can be found right here), and went on to describe what it was like to craft that footage in very… interesting… terms: I’ve never worked this hard, this long and been this emotionally involved in something that’s lasted only a few seconds since the time I lost my virginity! But the reaction has been amazing and I can’t wait for the fans to see our final product.

Finally, and on a positive note for those of you who are hoping to make their way in Hollywood but want to avoid the “hell” spoken of by the likes of ROBOCOP director Jose Padilha, Edwards had this to say about his experience: Everyone warns you about working for Hollywood and how you can get treated in a certain way but my experience has been the polar opposite. Thomas Tull (founder of Legendary Entertainment) has been very supportive.

So what do you think about what Edwards had to say? Does he have the right idea?
