Golden Tomatoes '06

Uber-review compilation site Rotten Tomatoes has revealed its Golden Tomato Award winners for 2006 and it turns out CASINO ROYALE was last year's best reviewed wide release and THE QUEEN was the best reviewed limited release. It seems people really dug the gritty, blond James Bond and the gritty, not-so-blond Queen Elizabeth. Below you'll find the top winners in each genre, the most surprising of which (at least to me) is the winner for "family" as I had no idea that film even existed and the fact that SCIENCE OF SLEEP is considered a romance. Check out the rest of the winners HERE.

Animation - CARS
Comedy - BORAT
Documentary - WORDPLAY
Foreign - PAN'S LABYRINTH
Horror - THE DESCENT
Family - LASSIE
Romance - THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP
Sci-Fi - CHILDREN OF MEN
Thriller - THE DEPARTED

My picks:

Animation: Cars (agreed with them there although this was a pitiful year for animated movies and I haven't seen Renaissance or A Scanner Darkly yet)

Comedy: Little Miss Sunshine (haven't seen Borat yet though)

Documentary: n/a

Foreign: n/a

Horror: Silent Hill

Family: Cars (haven't seen Charlotte's Web and I'm sure that'll be #1)

Romance: Superman Returns

Sci-fi: V for Vendetta (if that don't count then Children of Men)

Thriller: The Good Shepherd (despite

Thriller: The Good Shepherd (despite the slow pace I do consider this to be a thriller and a great one too!)

There are a lot of movies I haven't seen yet though so this will likely change.

For instance, several hours from now I'll be watching Blood Diamond then I'll be seeing Curse of the Golden Flower, Happy Feet, Notes on a Scandal, Pan's Labyrinth, The Persuit of Happyness, Charlotte's Web among others.

Good list, except...

Cars was one of the worst films of the year, not just the worst animated. If that wins the Oscar I'll be fucking livid. Not that I'm getting overly worked up or anything.

Best horror

The Descent was OK. I didn't think the suspense held up through the whole film. It was tense until you saw the creatures then it kind lost momentum I thought.

Anyway, Silent Hill is up there on my best horror list I would say. Great sound and visuals.

My question to brentage5000
What do you consider to be the best horror?
I personally haven't seen The Descent but heard great things. Didn't see a great deal at the cinema in the past year and am curious as to what others feel is worth a look

There was nothing even close to The Descent in the category of horror this year.

The Descent as best horror film? No, man....just no. It was good and scary, but to call it the best? Sorry...I don't buy it.

Funny thing is, while Casino Royale got a bunch of positive reviews, as these awards show, but probably won't get nominated for any serious awards at the Oscars.

Casino Royale the top reviewed movie of the year at RT. Whoulda thunk it?
