Strike Back below!
by: Mike Sampson Feb. 24, 2009

To paraphrase the guy who said it first, the reports of the GREEN HORNET's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Despite being left for dead just last month, Seth Rogen's GREEN HORNET soldiers on at Sony and today has found a new director to replace Stephen Chow, who left the project back in December. Sony has hired Michel Gondry to direct the film based on a script by Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Chow was expected at one point to continue to star in the film as Kato but it's unclear if that is still the plan. It would certainly be the largest and most ambitious film to date for Gondry whose last feature, BE KIND REWIND, was a critical and commercial flop. Though to be fair, his film prior to that, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, was absolute genius. I'm not sure what to think of this move. On the one hand I absolutely adore the moxie of Sony hiring a director known more for his originality and artistry but on the other I wonder if Gondry can pull it off? Of course many may have wondered the same thing about David Gordon Green and his ability to direct PINEAPPLE EXPRESS and look how that worked out. What do you think about this decision? Strike Back below!

Extra Tidbit: Yes I'm aware that it was Mark Twain that made that quote famous.

Uhh don't know what the fuck ya'll are talking about, but Be Kind Rewind was pretty awesome. And I don't think calling it a critical failure is accurate.

You do know this is an article about The Green Hornet film, not the Green Lantern one, right? Okay, just checking.

Epic Concert Film = Epic Hero/Anti-Hero Adaptation
As a big fan of Gondry's work on "Block Party", I'm excited to see what he does with GL's characters (look at how he humanized the-then-$50 mil. Dave Chapelle). Given his more surreal, creative eye, I'm anxious to see what Gondry does with the more intergalactic themes and images of the GL Corps...

If anyone's interested, shortly after directing the landmark concert film "The Last Waltz", Martin Scorsese went on to direct "Raging Bull". Gondry definitely follows Scorsese's style immensely in his concert film...knowing nothing about the script...could we see a movie that reshapes the myth much in the way that Scorsese did with Jake LaMotta?

Science of sleep?
Wasnt science of sleep after eternal sunshine?

Either way this is really strange news... Unless the hornets car is made out of yarn or something, the two just arent a natural fit... And i really like gondry but its just weird... Its like if someone told you fincher was tapped for the next julia roberts romcom... Youd be like, ' whaaaa?!

The problem with Be Kind Rewind was the fact that Gondry wrote the script and the movie blew because of it. He did just fine when he just directed (ie - Eternal Sunshine) and left the writing to the writers. This movie on the other hand is written by Rogen and Goldberg and has insane potential.

This makes the Stephen Chow departure real easy to accept.

Talk about an awesome surprise. :D He will make this good, simply put.

@ Hakubi:

Both Block Party and Science of sleep came out after Eternal Sunshine came out.

Before that, pretty much all he had besides amazing commercials and beautiful music videos was Human Nature, another Kaufman team up as it were

I never thought I'd actually be looking forward to this
And yet I am. I was a huge fan of the character growing up and I've been dreading this project since it was announced. I like Chow's stuff, and some of Rogen's but if I'm going to finally get a Green Hornet film after all these years I'd rather have it take the character seriously. That being said, maybe Gondry will still make this a comedy, but at least it will be smart and thought provoking,...

Oh, and Hakubi, both of those films are good but they were made (2005, 2006) after Eternal Sunshine (2004).

Wow! That is a surprising move. This is slowly becoming the black sheep of highly anticipated projects to follow on this site.

Torn!!
I love Gondry and his originality; I don't know how this will turn out. I am very interested to see what he does with this material. This is something I would keep a close eye on; Gondry will allow a lot of improv from Rogen and his mates. Question 1 is can Gondry direct a summer tentpole action/comedy cause that is what this is in the end.

Before Eternal Sunshine there were two films: Dave Chappelle's Block Party and the amazing The Science of Sleep. Also, Gondry originally was trying to get a Green Hornet movie made back in the late 90's when he first came to Hollywood.

Chow left because of creative differences yet Gondry, of all people, is considered to be a good fit? Riiight, that makes total sense.

This project now sounds as entertaining as a surfboard in a swimming pool. I'm not writing it off, but this is shaping up to be a total embarrassment.
