Goonies set for a 25th anniversay Blu-ray release

07.27.2010

There are a lot of people who feel like THE GOONIES is surviving solely on nostalgia and isn't much of a movie. I'm not one of those people. I genuinely love the film and while there is certainly some nostalgia involved, having watched it repeatedly as a kid, I still think the film works separate of that. So I'm excited to hear that GOONIES will finally be making its way to Blu-ray this fall with a big 25th Anniversary edition.

In addition to all the features included on the previous special edition DVD, the Blu-ray will include a new board game, collectible storyboard prints, a 1985 souvenir magazine with behind-the-scenes stories about the actual filming in Astoria, Oregon, including the production design that transformed Astoria into the “Goon Docks,” and a reprint of a 2009 article with updates of the entire cast, as well as producer Steven Spielberg and director Richard Donner.

The new edition will cost a pretty penny though. Be prepared to part with $50 of your hard-earned cash for the Blu-ray and $40 for the DVD edition of the same set. I do wish there were some new features on the discs themselves instead of a board game I'll probably never play but for a fan of the movies, I'm not sure I can turn down having this film on Blu-ray.

Looks like an awesome set. Not to mention you have the Back to the Future trilogy, Apocalyps Now, and the Alien Quadrilogy coming out this fall. I'll have to start saving my money now.

Weak Sauce

Goonies was always awesome but I refuse to buy a new copy until they make it a directors cut with the deleted scenes back in the movie

This is a movie I think you need to see as a kid to appreciate it as an adult. I never saw it when I was a kid but I watched it as an adult and I just didn't like it. Good for all the Goonies fans though.

The Octopus Project

I wonder if this cut will have the elusive "octopus" scene in it. I remember only seeing it once in the history of my watching this film. Right after the "water slide" pirate ship entrance, Annie gets to tango with the 8 armed rubber wonder. She even mentions it at the end of the film to her parents upon their rescue. Where did that footage go?

The DVD has that deleted scene among a few others, including a hilarious one involving Data trying to use his own binoculars in front of the Fratelli's hideout.

Oh! Can't believe I missed that. Must have been too distracted by how Un-Chunk Jeff Cohen looked after all these years. Thanks, I'll check it out.

Err, wait a minute...

.. The Goonies has already had a Blu Ray release, and I own it.
I won't be getting this though, as what's the point in buying the same DVD with a few added 'space-wasters'?
I'll stick with what I've got..

On the plus side, I too think it's got more than nostalgia keeping it alive!! It's a great family adventure movie!!

Although I'm sure it won't be a vast visual/audio improvement over the standard dvd version, I'm still going to buy this because it's one of my favorite movies of all time. I wish they would do an in-depth documentary for it with new interviews, but I'm getting it regardless.

goonies never say die!

I'm torn on this. I love the Goonies, and I totally see some value in the collector's item for real fans, even if it is just for some nostalgia...
but bluray too? there's NO reason to own this movie on bluray if you ask me, unless you want to see the folds in sloth's head more clearly.
I'll stick to the regular dvd one : )
