Gort concept art

07.12.2008

Update: We recently received an email from Lorin Wood and he informed us that, though he did work as a previz artist (previz being computer generated dynamic storyboards) on the film, the below sketch was merely done for fun and has absolutely nothing to do with the film.

The folks over at AICN managed to find some early concept design for Gort, the robot who travels with Keanu Reeves' Klaatu in the upcoming THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, and it seems they were initially thinking to make Gort a Cylon (from Battlestar Galactica) cousin or something. They ultimately decided to stick to the original film's design but it's cool to see what they wanted to do at first. Click through to check out more of Wood's work. Gort comes to Earth and makes it stand still on December 12th.

Extra Tidbit: Wood has apparently done work on some Disney projects, THE PHANTOM MENACE and lots more.

I swear I've seen that in at least one Star Wars videogame.

r u r...

thank god that design wasnt used...gort isnt menacing until the eye-visor drops down, then the frickin' laser beams attack, the drawing above is too "sci-fi"ish imho...

in keeping with the new up to date graphics available today, i'm hoping for something more bio-morphic in design, more fluid but just as menacing, less "T2" cyborg bot, more organic.

Good they kept the original design

That one sketch is great but looks too "transformish" for my taste. It is better not evoque any type of comparison.

Like the idea of a new Gort, not that one, though.

COOL

i actually would have liked something a bit crazier in design than the slightly taller than human size, humanly shaped robot in the original. i mean, the robots were supposed to be a deterrent force meant to help stop galactic warfare....wouldnt you want them to instill fear with just their appearance
