Goyer Talks Batman

Oct. 9, 2008by: Daniel Barna

Since the release of the THE DARK KNIGHT, it seems all anyone (including myself) can talk about is the inevitable follow up. Depp as The Riddler? Check. Phillip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin? Check. Ellen DeGeneres as Robin? Err...probably. Speculating on Batman 3 rumours has become a sport of sorts, and it's on the verge of overtaking Baseball as America's favorite pastime.

Well all you educated prognosticators and fanboys alike (is there a difference?), it's officially time to put a proverbial sock in it. David Goyer, the man who had a hand in writing both Batman films and who is a close, personal friend of Chris Nolan, has put all the rumours to rest in one fell swoop. In a recent interview with MTV, he had this to say about all the rumours:

It’s all B.S. ALL of it.

It doesn't get much more blunt than that folks. But Goyer wasn't even close to done. He went on to cast further uncertainty as to whether or not Nolan will remain at the helm of the franchise.

Chris and I haven’t even talked about it. He quite understandably is taking a long, long vacation and wants to purge himself. We have mused here and there [but] I mean Chris is pretty much a one movie at a time kind of guy. I wish I could tell you more. There really isn’t anything to tell. If and when [Chris is] ready to talk - we’ll talk.

So there you have it. All rumours have officially been squashed. Now we can all go back to talking about cinematic issues that really matter. So does anyone know who is playing the villain in BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA 2?

Extra Tidbit: Goyer refers to all the online rumours as "amusing".

In answer to the question...

.. a very angry dachshund.

TDK was part of the Origins story.
The first movie setup Batman.
The seconds movie setup Gotham City. It set up a city where weird nutters are the criminals instead of mere Gangsters. The Joker being the seed that produces the likes of Two Face and the others to come.

I'd like to see where they take the story next. But all in their own good time.

As others have said this article doesn't really tell us anything new, it just reconfirms what we already knew.

I can perfectly understand Nolan not wanting to do a third, because it'll be very hard to top TDK, and if he doesn't somehow manage to pull it off the fans will be mad. Aaron Eckhart has said that as far as he could tell they were planning to bring back Ledger for a third film I think this has been part of the dilemma.

Picture this: You've just made one of the most critically

Picture this: You've just made one of the most critically praised action films in history and everybody's clammoring for a sequel when the the best part of your movie, the actor you were planning to use as the villain in the follow up dies. Suddenly your whole plan for a part three goes down the drain. If that was the case I can see where you'd want to take some time off and ponder over whether it's even worth it to come up with another sequel idea.

However this series is Nolan's baby and I'm relatively confident that the fear of WB hiring another director if he says no, combined with the obscene amount of cash they'll throw at him will eventually persuade him to say yes.

On a side not my friends and I have put a ridiculous amount of time into outlining what we think a good third film would look like.

Well I hope Nolan isn't literally 'purging', because that is NOT a healthy way to maintain one's weight.

beatrixkiddo - I'm in love!
As for Batman, let's not try for too many. I don't think it can possibly stay on a roll.....

Just hoping against a "batman forever" situation where the director bails (taking on a producing role instead), and we get some shitty hack-ass director to fill in, taking the series in a completely different and shittier direction.

In other words, please don't let Brett Ratner anywhere near this franchise, please!!!!

Most educated people knew these were never true, as even the idea for a story hasn't been conceived yet.

I really hope Nolan comes back. Let him take a vacation and do another movie if he wants. But I think a 3rd batman would give some more closure to the series. We don't even have a batcave yet (which was hinted at in the end of batman begins).

Chris, take a serious breather! TDK had to be beyond stressful, physically and emotionally. And if you don't end up coming back, we (most of us) will understand.

Goyer is rather hit or miss with me. I loved how he "stole" QT's bit about superheroes and their masks from "Kill Bill, Vol. 2".

Goyer couldn't have gotten that bit more wrong and it's enough for me to either skip over that dialog in "Batman Begins" or just end the movie before it reaches that point.

I'm amused by the rumors online myself.

Nolan deserves a vacation.

Lol , the way he ended both 5 and 6 , i have a hard time thinking he wasn't thinking sequel , especially the way he ended BB . You don't end a movie with the reveal of a Joker card without having intentions of following up on the narrative and you don't leave Joker hanging towards the end of Tdk without the same thought .

Yeah , okay Goyer , it's all Bs , we'll see when Nolan comes back for the 7th film in the franchise .

If for some reason Nolan doesn't want to come back , even though i

If for some reason Nolan doesn't want to come back , even though i doubt it , well , i'm sure Alfonso Cuaron would be more than willing to put his stamp on the franchise , this series can survive without Nolan , Goyer , Bale , or anyone else , nobody is above the legend .

You know, come to think of it, The Dark Knight might not need another sequel after all. It kinda ended completely. But if they want to make a sequel, rock on.

This isn't going to stop the rumors from popping out in the nets. Some people live for this shit, sad but true. The man is on vacation, let him take his time 'cause most of us know he deserves. People need to move on.

OVERRATED....WHA?!

Now I know some people aren't as crazy about TDK as I am but c'mon...overrated?! The movie isn't overrated just because there's too much of it everywhere, folks. There's too much of it everywhere because it took people's expectations and made them look like lil' dwarfs in comparison to what was delivered on screen. It's not just Ledger, it's the entire movie as a whole. The storytelling, the truth to the plot...everything just stands out fantastically that TDK isn't even a comic adaptation

Bleh...TDK deserves every single thing that it has going right now and deservingly so! Oh as for the news...Nolan can take 2 years off I don't care...the 3rd one's inevitable and I'm willing to wait for Nolan to have a stroke of genius again. It's worth it.

Yeah I believe it's best the 2 Chris (both Nolan and Bale) and David to take a break from this franchise. The chain of events surrounding TDK has got to be pretty taxing. Take your time guys

Give the man a break!

Nolan had an extremely difficult shoot for TDK. Not only did Heath die, but he also lost a stuntman and his set caught on fire. When a director is good they tend to get close to their crews. I'm sure that the WB execs are about to drive a dump truck of money up to his house to come back, but what happens when someone does something that their hearts not in? It sucks. The two worst things that could happen: Nolan is forced to do a third one and he phones it in, or they push too hard and he

I would rather give the man time to finish a trilogy that is legendary rather than disappointing in the end (imagine Batman fighting ewoks)

Yeah, I'm with NoriNam on this one. I'd like to see Nolan do something else first. And even though I too thought TDK was a *tad* overrated, I'm definitely open for another one, but not just yet. I think the guy does deserve a break, IMHO.

As far as Nolan the director goes...

... aside from "Batman Begins" I've disliked all of his films. Mostly because of their endings. Particularly in the case of the atrocious "Memento" and the laughable "The Prestige."

Thank you, fanboy magazines and fansites...

... for sucking the teat of Chris Nolan and Warner Brothers and giving the obscenely overrated "The Dark Knight" ceaseless free publicity.

I can't wait for the DVD release so that we can finally STOP talking about it.

Here's hoping the inevitable third installment will actually live up to the ludicrous hype. Aside from sound editing (and perhaps a nod to Heath Ledger), there's little else to recommend the movie. Certainly not editing or cinematography, and definitely not directing.

While I liked Batman Begins and TDK (although I think they're overrated) I hope Nolan doesn't return to the franchise, at least not right away. I'd love to see him take on something different, as I feel movies like Momento or The Prestige to be much more interesting.

Take your time

I think he should do the same as last time. Make another movie in between. I found The Prestige to be one of the best movies of the year. And Christopher Nolan did a tremendous job researching and writing The Dark Knight while filming The Presige. I heard of those meetings he was having in between shooting days to gather ideas for TDK. It worked great before, do the same! Plus, Chris' talent is needed in other movies too. :P

fuck this industry

I hate how Hollywood and all the shitty reporters are putting so much pressure on Nolan to make a choice about whether or not to return. It's a tough choice, and everyone keeps screaming "uncertainty" and all that. Just because Nolan is a true filmmaker who doesn't just jump on the ship and say IM IN because the last movie was a hit. I don't blame him for taking a vacation, he must have seen this coming and it must be stressful because there is literally NO greater expectation for a director

Good!

I'm glad Nolan is taking a break. I think filmmakers and producers alike who just jump into a film one after another are asking for trouble. I don't think we should push him; he's doing a great enough as it is. If he want's to do another (and probably final) film then great! If not then that's alright as well. Dark Knight was what we've been looking forward to for a while. Great job Chris!
