Green Lantern 2 to be wait for it...darker and edgier

08.02.2011

Despite an overwhelming slew of negative reviews, GREEN LANTERN is moving ahead with a sequel. This is also in addition to the fact that it has grossed less than its alleged production budget, sitting at $150M under $200. This may seem insane, but the film hasn't opened in all overseas markets yet, so Warner Bros. is expecting to make a profit in the end.

Warners film group president Jeff Robinov had this to say to the LA Times about the sequel: We had a decent opening so we learned there is an audience.

"To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action… And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth."

Of course, darker and edgier. Pretty soon superhero movies are going to be so dark and edgy it will just be a black screen for the duration of the film with some low growling as dialogue.

I'm not sure I can see Ryan Reynolds leading this sort of dark and edgy movie, and I don't know if the character really lends itself to that, but I suppose we're going to see them try. As for balancing out space and earth time, that's really reliant on the budget, but I really didn't care for the overwhelming CGI that made up most of the intergalactic parts of the film anyway.

Do you think there should be GREEN LANTERN sequel?

Extra Tidbit: (spoilers) Why did Sinestro take the yellow ring at the end? He was the most heroic and noble character in the entire freaking movie.

There'll be no sequel

I'm calling bullshit on this. Sure they may say this but give it a few months soon the director will drop out. Then one or two of the major actors and finally the sudios will sweep it under the rugs.

Sure.

They can learn from this experience and tap into some good story telling.

It'll also be good for the VFX industry, as well as for the studio in regards to reuseable assets and already built pipeline.

Yup, of course.. because THAT'S what was wrong with Green Lantern. Honestly, Captain America wasn't incredible but it was leagues beyond Green Lantern, and it was the furthest thing from dark and edgy. Try focusing your script and giving us better character development from our hero.

Shitty writing, pretty simple. Same reason anything happened in this movie, boring, lazy story telling.

Needs a proper director, somebody that gets genre,it needs minimum studio interference and zero bloody formulaic plotline. And more Kilowog and Siniestro.

This is the main problem with Warner Bros... they think everything needs to be freaking Batman!

My prayers are with The Man of Steel.

Never mind dark and edgy, just make it good! As for Mr. Tassi's question about Reynolds handing darker and edgier... did you see the Amityville Horror remake? He was actually good in that including scenes portraying a demonic influence changing his personality to a meaner more abusive person. He can handle it but can they provide a decent script and director who can handle the material?

First one was so bad.

Ryan was the only good thing about it. The CGI was wretched, hopefully they fix that before focusing on making it more dark and edgy.

Darker and edgier....

Granted it wasn't a 'cosmic' story, but Defendor was a damn good 'dark and edgy' movie.

As far as Green Lantern 2...who really cares.

"I'm not sure I can see Ryan Reynolds leading this sort of dark and edgy movie"

People really need to see Buried.

And I don't care if there's a sequel, as long as it's actually a good movie this time.

I agree with Natalie Portman. I'm a HUGE Reynolds fan and wanted to like BURIED but at the end was sooooo disappointed. You get nothing out of that movie and would never re-watch it.

People need to AVOID seeing Buried. Reynolds acting and the poster were the ONLY good things about that movie. The writing was GOD AWFUL! SPOILERS!!

darker eh?

Maybe they'll do the story where GL finds his girlfriend murdered and chopped up in his fridge? Now THAT is edgy and dark for a super hero flick.

Tidbit: That's the whole thing about Sinestro, that he was the pinnical of the Corps and somehow fell to the yellow power of fear. I'm not sure how it all go's down in the comics but that's the jist of it from what i understnd.

Awesome!

becaause he wanted more power. duh! And i think the reason for the negative reviews was because people not knowing a lot about the green lantern. If you had read the comics you would like the movie. Reynolds did a great job looking forward to this.

As someone who loves the comics it makes me hate the movie even more. The Hot Wheels commercial when he rescues the helicopter? Reynolds playing Reynolds? Lively saying every line like she's trying to sound like a man? NONE of that bothered you?

Firstly, I have NOT seen the Green Lantern movie yet (though I will ASAP). That being said, Green Lantern is a great character with a rich history and should be given another shot.

Green Lantern was disappointing in that the idea was good, it just wasn't executed well enough. That said, I'd love to see a sequel with the idea taken advantage of. With regards to the Extra Tidbet, Sinestro took the ring because his name is Sinestro. His name screams bad guy.

Until I hear the words "reboot" I'm not interested. Go back to the drawing board WB. Less CGI, no Ryan "I know, right!" Reynolds, and more Oa, Killowog and the rest of the core. Seriously why would the core let Hal fight that lame CGI cloud all by himself, what kind of galactic police force are they anyway?

PLEASE MAKE THIS

The first one wasn't great, but it wasn't as bad as people (and critics) made it out to be. Green Lantern is a great character with a rich history. If done correctly, a Green Lantern movie can be amazing. I don't understand why so many people would rather them not do it at all. If you don't want to see it, don't. But for real fans of the character, let them try again and do it right.

Green Lantern could have been and should have been an awesome superhero movie, but unfortunately it was just OK. Hopefully this darker and edgier sequel makes up for the mediocore first film.

haters gonna hate but hey, I thought it was a good start

very much looking forward to the sequel... HOWEVER please, please don't really run with that 'darker' idea. It's the goddamn Green Lantern, I realize he meant that in tone but in terms of visuals and mood, Green Lantern is a bright and bold universe full of colour and diverse designs and characters, please do not make it 'hip' by making it dark and edgy. I'm alright if they change a little bit but the main thing they need to focus on is bringing the action and focusing on a grander scale, not

How about we just quit now on this disappointment WB. That movie is shit, hate on me all you want but for 300 million dollars and over a year of shooting the final product that made it on the screen was embarassing. Also again part of why that movie didn't do as well as it should have, HE'S RYAN REYNOLDS. People already know him well for comedy, he's NOT a superhero. Also the other main reason this movie did not do as well as it should have is the general public does not give a fuck about

Move on, make a Flash movie hell do Wonder Woman right so that girls will have something to go see too. Just make good movies that stay true to the comics that's all we ask WB. As for this, again just let it go.

please don't

the problem wasn't the tone, it was simply a lack of focus, focus on something in that movie they spread themselves too thin, and martin cambell is great for bond i think we need a new director on board who completely understands the GL history. don't get me wrong i wanna see the next GL movie, but like the new spidey, or apparently man of steel i hate the idea of making it darker and grittier for the sake of trying to cash in on dark knight money, GL is a different world, in some of the best

I saw this a few weeks after it opened, mostly because the bad reviews made me hesitant. In the end, even with the obvious flaws I enjoyed it. The problem with any WB related hero movies is that until they have something lighter make money and get slurped by the critics that natural reaction is going to be "make it more like Nolan's Batman."

Honestly the whole movie was bad and that was due to bad writing (which answer the Extra Tidbit question). The movie doesn't have to 'go dark' to become better, it just needs a screenwriter that actually understands and cares about the characters, AND can write a cohesive story for those characters. The WB Animation dept. doesn't seem to have a problem with this character, so why not give the live-action version to one of them?

GL2: Wrath of Sinestro

Although not as bad as some people made it out to be, Green Lantern could have been much better. Here's hoping we get a Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan type redemption with the sequel. I honestly think it could happen with the right team involved.

As someone who loves the Green Lantern story, character and movie I'm psyched! I think darker and edgier means getting rid of shit like Hal making a hot wheels ramp (cause even I'll admit that was lame), and focusing on the darker parts of the story like the Corps wars story-arc.
Extra Tidbit: Because he's evil! His name is SIN-ESTRO, DC literally spelled that one out for us. Don't worry, he does cooler stuff as a bad guy than a psuedo good guy.

sinestro doesnt become evil

Sinestro Believes in the corps mission to the up most degree that he is illing to sacrifice himself and his name in order to make sure the corps remains a viable entity still able to make sure no evil escape the corps sight. If that means become their greatest enemy. so be it.

Green Lantern felt like a 1 hour and 54 minute prologue to Green Lantern 2. I would like to see the sequel, but WB needs to find better components for it. The sequel requires a new crew who actually understands the Green Lantern universe, and if that happens Green Lantern 2 will automatically be better than the first one, and probably be a top comic book film. I'm hoping that happens.

Take Two

Hey, if they know what needs to be done to make it better and they're willing to do it, more power to them. Green Lantern has plenty of potential in my mind what it lacked in my mind was good writing. Too many unnecessary characters, a poorly established villain, a shallow hero, and crumby action. Throw in a few extra bucks and get a good writer for the next one please.

The franchise has potential. I thought the cast was great. Reynolds is a good Hal, Strong is a perfect Sinestro. With improved writing, you can make an exciting story out of a Green Lantern film. I'm glad they're giving it another chance despite it's sub-par performance. Hopefully they will put more creative minds to work on the sequel.

Superman Returns...

The fact that this crappy film gets a sequel and a great movie like Superman Returns did not get what makes no sense. SR did better on the box office, was critically aclaimed and had a great director with a proven record of making great and more action packed sequels. This just makes no sense what so ever...why a GL sequel and why a SR reboot?!

A) SR was not critically acclaimed. Not being lambasted is different. It's at a 76% on RT, that's closer to the rotten side of things, while still being fresh. B) The director did one sequel that everyone liked, and then did a 180 and created the tonal opposite with SR. C) The motherfucking child.

Darker and edgier than the first movie is fine, as I found that somewhat campy. But if they try to turn it into a Dark Knight-type movie, it will fail. The character doesn't lend himself to that type of atmosphere, even if Sinestro is the villain.

...And that ABOVE comment (bravo to Mr. Tassi) has ALSO been EXACTLY & the ONLY type of trolling that all of Christopher Nolan's haters can muster.

Anyways, Mr. Tassi, I 100% agree w/ you about Green Lantern 2.

...And that ABOVE comment (bravo to Mr. Tassi) has ALSO been EXACTLY & the ONLY type of trolling that all of Christopher Nolan's haters can muster.

Anyways, Mr. Tassi, I 100% agree w/ you about Green Lantern 2.

I do not like Nolan's Batman movies, and can give several reasons that have fuck all to do with growling, black screens, edginess, or grittiness. Just thought you'd like to know that, twat.

Darker and edgier doesn't mean the movie will be good. It needs good script and execution. For example, The Punisher movies are dark and edgy but lack of good scripts they ended up being what they are today. Colorful and less edgy are not exactly good move either, say, Batman and Robin. Good comic book movies just need good scrips and execution.

You know...I can't remember much from this movie and I only saw it two months ago. I know it was the worst of the 7 movies I've seen this summer. However, just before I saw it...I also watched GL - First Flight on DVD (that was pretty good) and now I am finding myself getting confused as to what scene appeared in what movie. For instance...I don't remember what Sinestro did in the live action movie...and seem to be recalling scenes from the animated movie. I suppose in terms of the live

I would probably watch that.
I actually thought the CGI alien bits were the coolest parts of Green Lantern. A bit edgier and toning down the stupidity of Reynolds' character wouldn't hurt the next movie at all.

Darker

Yes, Green Lantern can go darker. This is a character who after seeing his entire city, family and friends blown up by the evil Cyborg Superman goes off and murders the rest of the Green Lantern Corps.

So I think there might be some room to go darker. Cut the hair shorter dye the sides grey and jump the movie up 15 years since the last one.

This will not come to fruition. Barely making one's budget back, and being largely despised = just talk, then nothing then DOA
