Green Lantern team bringing Green Arrow to the small screen

Jan. 13, 2012by: Mike Sampson

Say what you will about GREEN LANTERN. Seriously, say what you will. It was horrible and it deserves any and all of your derision. But that is not stopping the creative team behind the film from sinking their teeth into a new "green" superhero adaptation.

Writers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim have signed on to write and produce a TV series based on the popular (?) DC superhero Green Arrow for the CW network. The CW is owned by WB, which in turn owns DC, and you would think they'd be a little put off by the work Berlanti and Guggenheim did on what was to be the relaunch of the DC universe with GREEN LANTERN. But the studio is hoping the duo, who worked on TV previously with "Dirty Sexy Money" (cancelled), "Eli Stone" (cancelled) and "No Ordinary Family" (cancelled). So don't worry Green Arrow fans, you're in good hands.

Green Arrow was once thought to be a big-screen property - David Goyer and Justin Marks worked together on SUPER MAX, a film that would've had Arrow framed for a crime and sentenced to a maximum security prison for supervillains. That project never got off the ground and clearly WB is hoping Green Arrow can be a new "Smallville" (where, not-so-coincidentally, the character made a few guest appearances).

The series hasn't yet received a commitment yet, just an order for a pilot. If "Wonder Woman" didn't get picked up at NBC does "Green Arrow" have a shot?

Smallville 2.0

If they somehow connect it to Smallville I'd watch it but I'm not that keen in picking up something "new". DC's given me to many reboots for another one.

I liked Green Lantern. I never read the comic though, so I don't know how far off it was from that.

Make it a Smallville spin off and I am so there. It would be a great way to have a built in audience too.

How does Marc Guggenheim still have a job writing Super Heroes? Proof once again that Hollywood is full of over paid idiots.

Green Arrow either lost or gave up his vast wealth (accounts vary), and became a hero more permanently, fighting alongside the Justice League of America, where he met and fell in love with Black Canary."

Green Lantern was a fantastic film. My favorite film of 2011 and I am tired of all of the criticism is has been getting on this site. The movie wasn't bad. It was your average good superhero flick. People on here make it seem that it is as bad as Batman and Robin.

As for Green Arrow getting his own television show, I will definitely check it out since he is one of my favorite superheroes. But it is going to be hard for anyone to top Justin Hartley's portrayal. If he were to come back,

It was awful, with the worst special effects ever committed to celluloid.

Sorry to say that it's not just the people here on this site who thought Green Lantern sucked all kinds of suckyness. Not saying you are wrong for liking it (hey, I don't like Nolan's Batman! so) but boy oh boy was Green Lantern bad. Have you actually looked at the special effects?? Roger Corman's 1994 Fantastic Four movie almost had better effects.

Well it's nice to see DC/WB try to try to do something else than Batman or Superman.
But why do I have a feeling this has good chances of ending up like Wonder Woman or Aquaman? ..or Birds Of Prey...god that was bad.

If they Can Get Justin Hartley Back, I'll Totally Be Down For it. He Was The Green Arrow For Me.

I'm already a huge Green Arrow fan so I'm bound to be excited by this no matter what. But in all honesty, I really do believe that adapting comic books into television actually works much better than adapting to film. Sure, there are some great super heroes movies but how many have come out that have been terrible to mediocre. It's hard to take an episodic story and par it down to one 2 hour movie. With television you have a lot more room to grow the character and you don't have to worry

With television you have a lot more room to grow the character and you don't have to worry about which villains to use because you can use all of them. Sure the budgets wouldn't be as huge but shows like Smallville and Heroes prove that you can still do some pretty grand stories with a television budget.

"made a few guest appearances" on Smallville? He was a main character in the final seasons. Are they going to continue that or start new and won't that confuse people?

Just bring back that old Flash TV show... that was good and fun!

It COULD work, but...

There are certian things that would need to be preserved that probably won't be. First, get Hartly back. He got Ollie and did him justice, and let him grow a f^%$'in goatee. Ollie is a liberal, a smart ass and a rogue. There is only one woman for him, and it isn't chloe sullivan, it is Black Canary. Now, what i fear is either a comedic take (a la green hornet) or a dark batman take, which is exactly the opposite of who Green Arrow is. Go back to the Longbow Hunters for inspiration and keep it

Go back to the Longbow Hunters for inspiration and keep it fun as well as dramatic, like Person of Interest. Damn shame of it is that it can be done...take the Green Arrow short film that had Neil Mcdonaugh doing him, or any Justice League episode with Kin Shriner. When done right, Green Arrow is awesome...Oh, and as for the "popular (?)" comment...dude, seriously?

Green Lantern

I have friends that loved it and friends that hated it. I was in neither boat. I was in the middle. The movie was fun but flawed. I agree with JediteX that it would have been a whole better if they made a few small changes.

Also, I keep chuckling while thinking about Josh Rachlis comment on this thread. He got a thumbs up from me!!

DO SUPER MAX INSTEAD!!

I read that script at my last job, and it was fantastic. Ditch these turds and just make that movie.

I'm mostly intrigued to find out what the ending to this sentence is: But the studio is hoping the duo, who worked on TV previously with "Dirty Sexy Money" (cancelled), "Eli Stone" (cancelled) and "No Ordinary Family" (cancelled).

The thing is the CW has really low standards. All they really need is a good recognizable cast and nothing else matters. I think back on Birds of Prey and i can't think of the name of any of the actors. But I think about Vampire Diaries(a show that is way too horrible to have been on the air for 3 seasons) and I can name a handfull of actors that were on other popular shows.

Love Green Arrow...

...but this show will suck balls. We need a good big screen adaptation, not another Wonder Woman or Aquaman-like fiasco.

I doubt this works

Because basically you are hoping that the Smallville audience is going to jump in with both feet BUT that audience already has their Green Arrow in mind with Justin Hartley. I'm assuming here that there is absolutely no thought of putting him back in the role.

Fans do not like change. I just think minus Hartley, the fans of the character of Green Arrow from the CW won't really give this one a chance.

See if I'm wrong though

I agree with Longbaugh, it's time for Joblo to stop bashing Green Lantern. Besides, Green Lantern wasn't even that bad to begin with.

I think it's time for them to stop bashing any films, it's their jb to report o films not tell us whether or not they were good or bad.

I'm glad to see lesser-known characters get a shot.

And seriously, JoBlo staff, it's getting ridiculous with the Green Lantern bashing. You didn't like it, we know -- now give it a goddamn rest already.

Something tells me this will be an instance where people complain rather than even give it a chance.
I'm just happy one of my favorite lesser known characters is getting a shot.
I hope they keep it grounded since they have a non super powered character.

I fear it would be something like "Birds of Prey" series a while back which lasted only 1 season.

These two writers have a terrible track record, how the hell did they convince someone to give them yet another chance. "Hi, everything we do sucks, will you let us make Green Arrow?" "Sure OK" WTF?

Green Lantern wasn't half as bad as people make it out to be. It wasn't a bad movie, it was an average movie that could have easily been good if a few small changes were made.
