Grumpy Cat: The Movie? Garfield-like feature film in the works for the famous feline

Grumpy Cat

Grumpy Cat (real name Tardar Sauce) exploded onto the internet in September of 2012 when an image of the disgruntled looking cat was posted on to the social news website Reddit. Since then Grumpy Cat has become a major online celebrity and has appeared on shows such as Good Morning America and The Soup. Grumpy Cat also attended SXSW Interactive where some fans waited several hours just to have a picture taken with the cat. So the next logical step would be to develop a movie based on the cat, right?

Deadline is reporting that Todd Garner and Sean Robins from Broken Road Productions and Grumpy Cat's representatives will create a package for a Grumpy Cat feature film. The film will provide Grumpy Cat with a voice and the movie will probably be very similar to the Garfield films. Todd Garner is excited for the film and believes it will be a purrfect (sorry couldn't help myself) movie for the whole family:

This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy,” Garner said. “You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.

OK, so obviously this is a ridiculous idea. I doubt they'll literally be building a script based on every meme that has been created of the cat but this just sounds silly. People love to use the cliche "Hollywood is out of ideas" but when you read news like this sometimes you can't help but agree with that statement. Sometimes you also can't help but want to slide the barrel of a cold gun into your mouth, like I'm sure many struggling filmmakers wanted to do when they heard this news.

Grumpy Cat is incredibly popular right now but everything has a shelf life. Some people might be excited for a Grumpy Cat movie but will they still be as excited when it is actually released months from now? And will this open the door for other movies based on memes? I certainly hope the f*ck not.
