There are comic book fans and then there are comic book MOVIE fans. Comic book fans are the ones that have read countless comics and then will nitpick (for better or worse) the screen adaptation. Comic book movie fans might have read a handful of Batman or Spider-Man comics but have more of a connection with the films. I fall somewhere in the middle and although the title may have the word "dummies" in it, I'm not looking down on those who have no clue who the members of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY are. I've talked about Marvel's Phase Two plans to some of my friends and whenever I bring up GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY I end up having to explain their entire existence.

I'm sure they're not the only ones and it's not like I'm a hardcore fan of the group, so this beginners guide to GUARDIANS at Collider is very handy for those who are unfamiliar with the comic. There's a run-down on how the group came to be as well as descriptions for each of the main characters. The article also mentions how certain characters and story arcs from the comics may be used in the film so there is a chance for spoilers.

While the casting news and rumors have been pretty exciting, it's hard to get pumped up for something you may not be an expert on. Would you have had as much enthusiasm for RDJ playing Iron Man if you had never heard of the character? That's why I love the internet: if you don't know something, just Google it. Well, that and the porn. If you are intrigued by the article and want to catch up on the comics don't worry; you have plenty of time before the films release on AUGUST 1st, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: It doesn't matter to me if you've read the comics or not but based on whatever knowledge you have, what character from GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY are you most excited to see on-screen?

Fantastic read! I'm a big fan of this series and all of the DnA Marvel Cosmic Universe books so I cannot wait. I think Jim Carey would actually do a great job as Rocket and I hope Adam Sandler is being considered for the voice of Cosmo the telekinetic Russian dog (trust me, he's awesome). I do have to admit that when I read the comics I always imagined that Rocket Raccoon sounded like Michael Rooker.

tidbit: Rocket Raccoon

im glad they are doing GOG. at first i was thrown off by the choice but this hints at a lot more galactic expansion of the action we will see. it opens up a lot of interesting possibilities for Thanos to show up in other films, for an epic Avengers storyline and for, dare i dream???, the return and proper utilization of the Surfer.

I'm still really surprised they're making this.

I'm not against it or anything, I just don't see why they picked a team that most people have never even heard of before. I'm a Marvel reader and they'd really only blipped on my radar a handful of times before the movie was announced. Just seems like such a strange property to put so much effort into.

Actually some of the characters are central to Jim Starlin's Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War and Infinity Crusade.

Well...
It's simply the best and easiest way to explain who/what is Thanos, why/how he does what he does, and why the Avengers are in trouble for running into him, and do that without loosing the first hour of Avengers 2 in this character's exposition..

Good Stuff

That summary is actually very well done. I've been a non-Earth Marvel fan for an incredibly long time. It knocked me for a loop when they announced GotG as a movie. I am most interested in seeing Rocket, though I am anxious about Carey and Sandler being rumored as possibly voicing Rocket. Sandler seems out of character for Rocket, and Adam is not an actor with a wide array of talent. Depending on how Carey does in the upcoming Kick-Ass movie, I may change my mind. Overall, Rocket is NOT a goofy

Overall, Rocket is NOT a goofy character. I've always pictured him having a very gruff, matter-of-fact voice.
