Guardians of the Galaxy IMAX 3D will feature shifting aspect ratios

06.05.2014

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY director James Gunn posted an enthusiastic statement on his Facebook just a few hours ago and it's nothing like the typical cryptic Facebook status you get from your friends. Gunn has revealed that IMAX 3D presentations of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will feature shifting aspect ratios in order to make a fuller experience.

Here is Gunn’s note:

Just got out of working on the Guardians cut for IMAX 3D and I’m unbelievably excited about it. Guardians of the Galaxy has been planned as a 3D film from its very inception. Yes, if you see the film in 2D, you’ll get a full experience. But the 3D experience promises a little something extra. Unlike many directors, I’ve been actively involved with converting every shot to 3D, making sure it works perfectly for the story and the film, making sure it’s spectacular and immersive without being silly, distracting, or overly showy. 3D conversion was once far inferior to shooting in 3D, but over the past couple years new technology has allowed us incredible control over the 3D effects, making it equal to or in some cases greater than shooting in 3D.

As an EXTRA benefit for those who see the film in IMAX 3D, we will be changing aspect ratios throughout the film in a way that makes the experience even fuller and more encompassing. I’ve personally chosen all the places where the changes occur and, again, I love how it’s coming along. The changing aspect ratios in this case are actually a part of the storytelling. Just wanted to share some of this stuff with you guys since I haven’t had a chance to talk about the 3D much. Hope you’re all having a great day. Hi!

Hi James! So, this is actually good news as I see it. We have seen on rare occurrences with IMAX a films aspect ratio change from scene to scene. This is due to the change from digital/35mm to native IMAX footage. You may have noticed this in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES or X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, which was for a more artistic purpose. So far everything we have seen from this movie looks fantastic; as someone who doesn't like 3D and wishes it would go away, I'm finding myself curious with this one.

It's great to see his enthusiasm show when he’s playing around with his vision; I’m sure that excitement and fun will show on screen when GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens on August 1st 2014.

ONLY FILM WATCHERS NOTICE AND ACTUALLY EVEN CARE!!!!

i'm a cinema projectionist both old school 35mm, 70mm and yes digital and to be honest listening to cinema goers these days they just want to watch a big film on a big screen. Yes its true I have spoken to film watchers who could not tell you the difference between a true 3D and a converted film and to be honest they don't care they pay to see a good film on a big screen.
Lets be honest its only us tech geeks and film lovers that really care about the picture quality,....whether pixelated or

Ratio shift on Guardians of the Galaxy come on guys lets be realistic the majority of watchers in here (well in the uk) are going to be under the age of 15 as this film will be a 12A and only care how much destruction is caused or if over the age of 30 will be a comic fan and more focused about the nature/quality of the story rather than screen technicalities.....

It is maybe a pretty cool idea, but considering the nearest real IMAX to me is a two hour drive (of course there's plenty of that fake IMAX with the tiny screens and digital projectors close by... bah) and I absolutely loathe 3D, even in movies where it's supposedly done well, I probably won't be checking it out this way.

ratio shifting is nice

If, and only if it's because we're shifting to native IMAX... It doesn't seems to be the case, here. It seems to be more of a gimmick, just like bad 3D conversion...
Anyway, I just can't wait for this movie to come out. It's just that I'm just as tired of bad IMAX conversion as I am of bad 3D conversion...

Sounds cool enough

But I have yet to see a post converted 3d film that comes close to the quality of one shot in native 3d, let alone one that looks better. Its gotten to the point for me that I go to 2d screenings of post converted movies like Noah and Edge of Tomorrow. But I'll give this one a try in 3d.

No problem with this

But his comment about converting to 3D being sometimes better than shooting in 3D is absolutely ridiculous...

Cool I like changing the aspect ratio up... There was also a bit of it in Grand Budapest Hotel it worked really well, but still not sold on 3D conversion.

Awesome news!

Personally I've never understood how changing aspect ratios could be a BAD thing. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the screen fill out immensely when Batman was jumping off the Hong Kong skyscraper in The Dark Knight, or Bane dismantling the CIA plane in the prologue of The Dark Knight Rises. Experiencing that in theaters is just an eye-opening experience, and it really showcases the strengths of IMAX. Of course, I'd love to see this type of thing in ACTUAL IMAX theaters, with the 2-story tall

I can't wait to see GotG in Imax 3D....and perhaps I'll wait for Interstellar to finally see a movie shot with IMAX cameras on a real IMAX screen in all its glory.

I always felt changing aspect ratios to be terribly distracting. Maybe there's a purpose to it that I ain't seeing but in my personal opinion, it takes you out of the movie. I don't know, this whole 3D fad needs to stop anyway. I wouldn't be so hard on this subject if it weren't for the fact that 3D has taken over all showtimes at the movie theater, leaving many film-goers no chance to catch its standard "2D" counterpart.

I can remember getting drunk and watching The Dark Knight Rises. I thought I was going insane seeing the screen size shift.

Another great reason to be excited to see the film. Everything has looked fantastic so far and I for one welcome the month of August with open arms.
