Guardians of the Galaxy will feature Thanos and connections to Avengers 3

Apr. 11, 2014by:

After a quiet spell, the talk of Thanos is about to heat up once again. After the closing credits tease in THE AVENGERS, many thought that we would be seeing the purple guy as the nemesis for what became AGE OF ULTRON. But, with Kevin Feige and Marvel having their future plotted through 2028, it seems that the plan is to save Thanos for a future film, but one that may be sooner rather than later.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY director James Gunn shared information about whether or not Thanos will be making an appearance in his scifi superhero film due later this summer.

Gunn calls Thanos, who is only a small part of the film, "the head of the snake," confirming he's in the movie by saying that he'll be depicted in motion capture. What's curious is that Gunn also illustrates the pervading notion that this story is happening in the background of the Marvel universe by noting, "We're definitely connected to AVENGERS 3."

It seemed a foregone conclusion that the events of THE AVENGERS would be directly connected to the overall cinematic universe, but that is a long wait to build up the character. I like the fact he will be teased again in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, especially since CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER has re-introduced Hydra as the big villain for the next phase of the Marvel films.

Who will be portraying Thanos via motion capture or voice is still a mystery as is whether we will even hear Thanos speak. Maybe Nathon Fillion's recent hint that he may or may not make an appearance in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY hints at something more menacing.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY hits theaters August 1, 2014.

As Outsider says below...

I've been saying I bet Vin Diesel is playing Thanos for months.

They don't need to 'announce' him as Thanos though as he's already credited as Groot. So his involvement isn't a secret. And let's face it, in this film Thanos may only be in one scene... But they have him in place for a bigger role in Avengers 3.

To me it makes sense.

If I'm wrong, then I'd love it to be Nathan Fillion (who, let's be honest, is linked to both James Gunn AND Joss Whedon)

Either way, I'm pretty damn

Not surprised

The Guardians will likely be in The Avengers 3 because The Avengers will need all the help they can get to defeat Thanos.

Currently, Marvel comics has a limited series going for the cinematic Guardians of the Galaxy. The Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude features Thanos as a character. Logically, he might appear in the movie to which the comic's story leads. I am glad to read that Gunn confirms the mad Eternal's presence.

I actually think it makes most sense to have Thanos connected to the Guardians of the Galaxy since the film's universe will be broader and will take place in space and with different alien creatures.

I just can't wait to see how much fun the film is going to be.

It's Vin

I bet my life on Vin Diesel "playing" Thanos. What a better cover for his presence in production than that he is playing another character, Groot. I don't believe for a second that that's all he's doing. As for Filliom? Maybe Nova. Maybe nothing.

He definitely has the voice for it.

But if he's not, then I would love to see Ron Perlman portray Thanos' voice. Him or Morgan Freeman of course.

Or, even better, he's pulling double duty as Groot and Thanos a la John Rhys-Davies in Lord of The Rings.

If any film were going to connect to Thanos, I assumed Guardians would. Especially after the tease at the end of Thor Dark World. Glad it's confirmed. While I like the slow pacing of the films in terms of laying out the bigger picture, I would like to see them approach it more now. I don't really want to wait until 2020 before we actually find out who the real villains are and what they have planned.
