Guess what the MPAA rated the Evil Dead remake?

01.28.2013by:

EVIL DEAD remains one of my all time favorite movies so I was naturally hesitant when a remake was announced that would not star Bruce Campbell. But, when I saw Fede Alvarez' red-band trailer. I felt my fears disappear. I saw in the talkbacks some people complaining that the reason that the original EVIL DEAD worked was because of the atmospheric horror and not the gore. I seem to recall that the original movie featured a tree raping a girl, melting skulls, buckets of blood, and decapitation by shovel. None of that says subtle to me.

So, it should come as no surprise that Alvarez posted this to his Twitter account: "Was proud of scoring a NC17 when submitted! But we had to cut stuff out to get an R and get the film into theaters."

From a business standpoint, an R rating is vital for box office success. Many movies get his with stricter ratings by the MPAA before filmmakers make cuts to satisfy a reduced rating. But, this makes me feel good that the movie will honor Sam Raimi's film by not shying away from the grotesque horrors hinted at in the trailer. This also means there will actually be a worthy unrated version when it hits Blu-ray.

But I am not going to be satisfied with just gore. I want EVIL DEAD to disturb me and unsettle me the way the original movie did. They can save the comedy for EVIL DEAD II.

EVIL DEAD will hit theaters on April 12, 2013.

Why can't they send 2 prints to theaters, they can play nc-17 as "late showings" when they can really regulate who gets into theaters from 11pm-1am and then they can show the R version during normal theater hours... Theaters should always have midnight or late night showings all the time! Not just during summer! Ill see this no mater what, but still! It. Not fair to people who can and want to see a NC-17 version of this film, or any for that matter!

That's a fantastic idea, specifically for horror genre. Not sure it'd have the same appeal for a nudity heavy art house film.

Should Release BOTH!

I think they should release both versions of the film; "R" and "NC-17." That way, I can see the version I want without some soccer mom getting paid to watch movies telling me which one I can see. Release the "NC-17" version on a small amount of screens and let the fans decide which one to watch. I mean, we just had like four different versions of The Hobbit, so why not for Evil Dead?

Didn't they already say they were aiming for an NC17 only to cut it to an R? Oh, well. As much as I want to be excited for this, I read the first draft script and it was very mediocre. I'm hoping the re-writes were able to fix some of the flaws and that dreadful ending.

It would've been awesome if they really go for NC-17 but R works for me.

If they announce that they'll put the NC17 version on disc after it's run in the theater than I'll wait to see it rather than watch the watered down R rated version.

It is disappointing. The movie was never going to be a blockbuster anyway, so why make it R rated just so MAYBE you can make a few more million. I predict the blue ray, and dvd sales will far eclipse it's box office, and especially so if we get to see it as NC17, the way it was intended.

Was there ever a doubt? I've read the script and if they stick to it (which seems to be the case), this was to be a pretty hard NC-17 (if there's such a thing as a soft NC-17).

This movie intrigues me...

but what happened to fan loyalty?

Everyone is complaining that they'll be waiting to see this on bluray/dvd so they can see it as it was meant to be seen and as touting the R rating as a compromise of integrity by the filmmakers, when I'm pretty sure the way it was meant to be seen was IN THEATERS.

Remember when you would go see a film at the movies just to support the creative team behind it? A sort of "sit in" protest to show studios that people WILL pay to see these kind of movies in

Maybe I'm just old school, but I will be seeing this flick in a theater regardless of it's rating or final edit. It could blow my mind, or it could suck the shit out of a dead apes ass, but I will support it either way because I respect the filmmaker and the filmmakers who are putting this together. THEN I will watch the unrated extended alternate ending cut once it becomes available as the filmmaker intended... unless it's that apes ass thing.

If it was NC-17 the number of theaters showing the film would decrease significantly. You can thank the MPAA for that.

Will be waiting for bluray release then.

I want to see this as it was made to be seen, not edited for theaters.

Would be pretty awesome if they released it as is. Just because it would ever after be referred to as the Evil Dead remake where the director was so determined to please fans and one-up the original that he wound up with an NC-17 movie. It would become its own kind of cult movie. It may still, but playing it safe in the theatrical release dampens that potential.

If NC-17 can ever become a mainstream rating, then the best chance it has would be with an established property.

Sick I knew this would of happen...

Why can't they just release it as NC-17 stop being pussies it's time we start getting this rating into theaters. It's fuckin 2013, didn't they play NC-17 movies in theaters back in the 60's 70's in theaters ??? Why are people so scared of this rating. Kids will sneak in always, violence will always be around, just fuckin release the movie in what it's suppose to be. Sometimes cutting the film hurts it so bad. I hope this isn't the case with EVIL DEAD. But something needs to happen and we need

It's not that hard.

NC 17 didnt start being used till 1990. They used to give NC 17 a rating of X, but they changed it as people thought it was porn. Robocop initially received a rating of X till they trimmed it down.

I will see this in the theater and then buy the unrated blu ray. This movie looks like it will be the 1st in a long time to creep me out. The red band trailer made me cringe and squirm.

No matter what

No matter what the rating is, it is still a useless remake.. And people who will pay to see it will only tell Hollywood to make more remakes.. And sequels to remakes..
