Guillermo del Toro announces Pacific Rim 2 is a go in 2017!

06.26.2014

It's official: there will be a PACIFIC RIM sequel and we have a release date! Director Guillermo Del Toro made a couple of big announcements regarding the now franchise today including that he is developing an animated series set in the PACIFIC RIM world; the show is set to debut before the sequel. PACIFIC RIM 2 has been set for a 2017 release with Zak Penn (X-MEN: THE LAST STAND) working on the script, and original screenwriter Travis Beacham is working on the sequel and overall franchise development.

Toro told Buzzfeed:

The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.

The first film made just $101M domestically but $309M overseas, which is confidence enough if you ask the suits behind the decision. PACIFIC RIM was nothing more than fantastic popcorn fun and, like a lot of you, I was genuinely surprised that the movie didn't do very well in North America. What's even sadder is the fact that TRANSFORMERS is looking to take in $100M this weekend alone; chew on that. We don't have any info about returning cast at this point but PACIFIC RIM 2 will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on April 7, 2017.

Are you ready for another ridiculous monster-robot movie?

Are you funnin' me, son? No I am not. The director was kind enough to share the news in a short video clip:

I loved the first film, so I'm really stoked that a sequel is getting made.

The first one was a nice surprised, but it does not really need a sequel IMO. And it never quite found the audience either. But I guess the focus on international box office trumps what happens here.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Pacific Rim was a TERRIBLE movie! Stupid story, lame characters and the robot/monster fight scenes were so boring. You couldn't even see what was going on because it was always night time and raining.

If he can make it with less huge, gaping plot holes I'm in. The "Wall of Life"? Were the Kaijus supposed to get demoralized and turn around? Please.
Still the first one is enjoyable, but I don't buy for a second that how well you beat the crap out of each other determines your drift compatibility. What happened to close family member or spouse? That shit went right out the window almost as soon as they introduced it.

Fuck. Yes.

Thank jeebus for this news. The first was pure popcorn ecstasy for me and I can't wait for part 2. I hope Newt and Gotlieb are mind-controlling Kaiju to fight for us now and that the geeks are finally the rockstars. I'd also like to see half Kaiju/half robot hybrids created by the Kaiju masters since we sent some of our tech over there to blow them up and maybe they adapted some of it. There's lots of potential here and I'm very excited to see it.

My inner 9-year-old is going, "Whoo! Piew, pies!"

PR was the dumbest awesome movie ever, IMO. I'm more than happy to see a sequel.

And for all those moaning about no MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, go see SNOWPIERCER. Maybe then Hollywood will green light more original flicks.

It's possible that the pumping theme tune clouds my judgement but I enjoyed Pacific Rim so welcome this news. I've never understood the negativity surrounding a movie not being a success in the US. Clearly a movie can make far more than it cost from the rest of the world and be held in high regard...so I'm glad the money men take this in to consideration. Heck, without the rest of the world...where would The Hoff be????

Awesome. Really enjoyed the first one--not quite on my top 10 of last year, but close. Also, if we can't get Hellboy 3, I at least demand the return of Hannibal Chau! I need more Ron Perlman in my life.

I'm all for another round in the "Pacific Rim" universe...

...But I think I speak for a lot of fellow Del Toro fanboys & JBschmoes here when I say I wish this was a "Hellboy 3 officially greenlighted!" announcement.

Oh well, @ least we've got "The Strain" & "Crimson Peak" to look forward to.

Evangelion sequel, no thanks

and yet, somehow, he can't get the funding for At the Mountains of Madness. Don't preach to me that this is nothing like Evangelion, because if a live action Evangelion came out tomorrow, people would say "wait a second, this is a Pacific Rim rip off." So please, shut your mouth.

Great stuff.

Wow, a lot of negative scores going to those who are pleased with this news. I loved the first one, it was loud, dumb fun, but visually amazing. Not Del Toro's best, but even his second rate movies are better than most bringing their A game.

Don't get all the love for this movie, it was quite entertaining, but so was Transformers.
I think it has a lot to do with Del Torro. I bet if you would've put Zack Snyders name on it and release it like that, people would've bashed it as a stupid action blockbuster.

Wish Del Torro would do one of the dozend other movies he is in talks with (especially the Justice League Dark project), but instead we'll get giant robots vs monsters part two.

The guy who did "Pan's Labyrinth" is wasting his time with a part two of "Pacific Rubbish." (I even wonder about the Hellboy films as well; the writing isn't that great in those films either).

YEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS!!!

God that makes me happy. The first was probably the most entertaining film since The Avengers and one of the few on the same level of just fun and entertainment. The only bad thing was the potential that a sequel might not happen. It damn well better make more money. It's a travesty that the 4th installment of that franchise can make so much when a film that's superior in every way (and featuring robots that make the Transformers look like Tinker Toys). I regret not seeing the first one in

Now I have used "childish jokes" and "juvenile humour" as critical statements before, but j.sin atomic recently posted this quote by C.S. Lewis in an article about the new TMNT film and it really made me take notice: "Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of

To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

Better than Transformers?

Love how earlier this afternoon people were bashing the new Transformers than get all giddy like when this is announced. The movies are both sides of the same coin, mindless, CGI driven garbage. I agree with the comment below that GDT should be working on better projects at this point in his career. At least I have The Strain to look forward to next month...

Guillermo del Toro's passion and respect for anime, manga and Tokusatsu fuels Pacific Rim and sets it apart from something like a Michael Bay-directed Transformers film because in the Transformers films, all that is projected is Bay's own contempt for the source material and contempt for its fans. Also, the big reason Pacific Rim outranks the Transformers film is the character of Mako Mori, who is capable, important to the story, treated with dignity and who is sexy but not blatantly, needlessly sexualised.

But is anyone else feeling kinda 'over it'? It's totally possible that everything I've seen in theaters in the last year has killed my enthusiasm for stuff - but yeah it's like "that's nice, I'll see it when it comes out - but I ain't holding my breath".

The giant robots & monsters are the main characters & who we came to see. More fighting & less corny dialogue for unlikable humans.
