Guillermo del Toro brings the darkness back to Disney with Haunted Mansion

07.22.2010

Guillermo del Toro made a huge announcement at Comic-Con today. Well, he's definitely not going back to THE HOBBIT, but he will be teaming up with Disney to write and produce on HAUNTED MANSION.

del Toro surprised the fans and had this to say on the subject, “Dark imagery is an integral part of the Walt Disney legacy. After all, Disney himself was the father of some really chilling moments and characters - think Chernabog from Fantasia or Maleficent as the Dragon or the Evil Queen in Snow White. I couldn't be more excited to be a part of my own adaptation of the original theme park attraction Walt envisioned and that remains- for me- the most desirable piece of real estate in the whole world!"

Wow. Think of the possibilities with this one!

Rich Ross, chairman of Walt Disney Studios talked about the partnership, “Millions of people from around the world visit The Haunted Mansion each year, but no one has ever had a tour guide like Guillermo del Toro. Guillermo is one of the most gifted and innovative filmmakers working today and he is going to take audiences on a visually-thrilling journey like they’ve never experienced before.”

Another project that del Toro is showing off at Comic-Con is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK which he is producing. Tomorrow in Hall H, there will be a panel for the film with del Toro and director Troy Nixey. The first footage of the film will be shown during the panel.

No details yet on whether Eddie Murphy will be back. Actually, they probably won't let him back.

All you Nay sayers are hating just cause he is doing the movie, and not doing the one out of 20 other movies he said he was going to do. Or youre pissed cause he isnt making a big name of himself by doing The Hobbit. He is making Haunted Mansion cause he LOVES the ride, disney, the story and such. Like all directors should, they should do what they love, not make a movie cause they think they will become famous and gain money.

um...

I hope this is a move to further his career so he can eventually make At the Mountains of Madness. I'll see it just because it's Del Toro...otherwise I would skip this all together.

WTF

What a total waste of talent! Of all the movies he could be doing, he's doing this? The Eddie Murphy one wasn't that bad, it was a kiddie movie based on a kiddie ride, how much more can be done? I'm calling bullshit, stop wasting time and make HellBoy 3...Guillermo del Toro you just lost 1 cool point now your at 99 out of 100...

I like Del Toro, but him coming out and announcing that he was going to do a new Haunted Mansion is not really what I wanted to hear. I mean he has a lot of other cool projects lined up and this doesn't really sound like something that will get the audience of Comic Con excited. I trust him though.

del Toro is a rational man who likes to make imaginative, wholly original fantasy movies. His elaborate original ideas cost a lot of money. I imagine he took this on in order to pay for his more personal projects. That being said, the man never just phones it in, so this may be pretty damn good.

sweet

The haunted mansion creeped me out when I first rode the ride. I didn't watch nor did I desire to see the movie that didn't seem to do justice. Always felt that if they did a movie based on the ride, it should be creepy. I think Del Toro will do it justice.

Haunted Mansion? Are you fucking kidding me? Why is Hollywood wasting such talented people on such pointlessly shitty shit?

I'm glad Kubrick and Hitchcock are dead, or Hollywood would be paying them to direct remakes of fucking... something shit. Argh!

Anybody who has seen Pan's Labyrinth can't possibly think that this is bad news.

He's doing a great job

He's just adding movies to his plate but as a producer.
I think it's great.
I hope he gets on his own actual movie projects soon though. I want The Witches adaptation...

This is awesome. Haunted Mansion is an awesome ride and deserves a good film translation apart from the terrible Eddie Murphy version. I am glad Guillermo del Toro is rebooting this thing. He can make an awesome Haunted Mansion movie.

I'm probably one of the very few individuals that liked th 03 version. Still, I'm excited about what del Toro will do.

will likely be good

but I'm still disappointed. Ever since he mentioned "At the Mountains of Madness" I've been disappointed with every new del Toro movie announcement (even the hobbit) because none of them were at the Mountains of Maaaaadness.

Guillermo? are you listening? make it happen!

I think the only better director would have been Tim Burton in his heyday, but he sucks now so Guillermo is the best option.

Edit: Scratch that, apparently hes only writing and producing.

I'd rather have him working on a conclusion to Hellboy with Hellboy 3.

If there's one movie I never thought about getting rebooted, it's Haunted Mansion (never saw the Eddie Murphy one). It's no Hobbit, but it sounds like a great project for Del Toro. It just pains me to see him taking on any project that postpones Hellboy 3.
