Guillermo del Toro confirms the existence of a DC supernatural hero project called Dark Universe

When the news first dropped back in November that Guillermo del Toro was developing a sort of "supernatural AVENGERS project" based around DC's darker heroes, many thought it was just a rumor.

Whether it ends up actually happening or not, I can tell you this much: it's no rumor.

It's currently being developed with the title DARK UNIVERSE (as opposed to the originally-rumored HEAVEN SENT), an unnamed writer has been hired to work with Guillermo to pen a first draft, and the names floated for the anti-heroic line-up include John Constantine, The Spectre, Swamp Thing (pictured respectively above), Deadman, The Demon, and the pair of Zatara and Zatanna (pictured respectively below minus Zatara).

"I'm working on it," said del Toro. "I'm writing the outline and we're already in talks with a writer. A very, very good writer. People are probably going to be happy with who we have chosen. He accepted. I've been courting this writer, who I think is the perfect guy for this job. We're doing it. Hopefully it will happen... The movement for this happened before [The Avengers]. They were already galvanized to launch 'Justice League' and they were galvanized to make their universe cohesive... They are really, really, with 'Superman', very, very confident with what they have. They are now feeling they have two pillars. Batman and Superman... There's a foundation that now they can build on."

We've been blue-balled/lady blue-balled before with AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, so even if the draft is brilliant and the rights are secured and the designs are stunning and everything comes together there's still no promise that something of this scope would survive all the way until Day 1 of shooting.

But it's real, it's in the works, and I have all the hope in the world that we'll see it come to dark life someday. We all know Guillermo has a thousand and one things in the works, but considering his very public passion for these heroes I find it all too easy to imagine how he'd drop most any other opportunity to manifest this story and bring these uncommon men/women/other things together for all to see.

Extra Tidbit: Definitely like the title HEAVEN SENT better, but DARK UNIVERSE is a bit more all-encompassing and would leave the door more open for all sorts of smaller tie-in films, such as a reboot of CONSTANTINE which is probably part of the whole game of this project.

This could be EPIC.

I would LOVE to see Del Toro direct a Swamp Thing solo flick.

"ekam siht eivom"

Damn, would I love to see that! But we have seen other Del Toro projects in other later production stages who aren't out yet...so, wait and hoping for the best that this will come to life!

Dark Universe reads like good shit to see. Del Toro did Blade II rather well. He got much better with his two Hellboy movies. Now, he would be doing a similar movie except with DC heroes instead of Marvel or Dark Horse. This project is a no-brainer. Just let del Toro entertain us.

Oh my god. Del Toro doing this, hell yes! We can expect great effects with minimal CGI. Blade II was the best of the series, in my opinion. The Hellboy movies are few of the greatest comic book movies out there.

This is very exciting news, and GDT's takes on darker characters is always great. They can easily use the characters from the current Justice League Dark (amazing book for those comic readers) and throw in Swamp Thing (my 3rd fave dc character of all time) and throw in Animal Man too!

Gone Gone Form of man and Rise the demon Etrigan! It would be awesome to see someone say that in a live-action movie.

Justice league dark is a great comic. If they did the movie somewhere around those lines, then im in for sure! Please make an animal man movie too. that would be insane!

Now this is a good idea. It seems they're using the same method as Justice League, but here you have a group of generally unknown or un-used characters. Just add in Animal Man for the hell of it. It's hard to get really excited though since like anything with del Toro involved, the chances are high it'll never happen.

So, will this be a TV series as originally reported, or a film? I prefer the title "Heaven Sent" too as "dark" seems kinda overused these days, but if there's any chance to see a live-action Zatanna beyond Smallville, I'm all for it!
