Guillermo del Toro drops out of Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson

06.12.2014

Earlier this month news broke concerning the upcoming live-action BEAUTY AND THE BEAST from Disney when they attached Bill Condon to direct. The news left me asking what ever happened to on Guillermo del Toro’s live-action Beauty and the Beast adaptation? Emma Watson has been set to star since 2012 and the project remained quiet since. Well the news today isn't great; del Toro has dropped himself from the project as director and will simply produce the movie.

Deadline reports that scheduling conflicts are the reason for del Toro’s departure. It's a busy time in Hollywood for adaptations, especially those with Disney’s name on them. A few days ago we told you that del Toro was writing PACIFIC RIM 2, so perhaps there is something positive to take from this story and that's the assumption he will do that sequel sooner rather than later. I don't care if I'm reaching, this story made me sad.

Del Toro just started post-production on his haunted house drama CRIMSON PEAK, so there is something to look forward to from the great director.

This is annoying. He dropped out of the Hobbit and now Beauty and the Beast. Why does he sign onto do films if he can't make them? He is a fine film maker and he puts time energy and creativity into his projects. But if he says he is going to do a movie, he should do the movie. Any production company now has to look at him and say signing him is a risk.

Del Toro seems to be a good and passionate guy but as it was already said before he's attached to too many projects that never are greenlighted. Plus, like Rodolforever said there are too many films based on fairy tales these days. We already have too many superheroes flicks so if the old children stories invade our screens too, it will be boring as hell. Finally, not a big fan of Watson.

Wow...no way...

Del Toro takes on too much and drops out of ANOTHER movie...big effing surprise. It's half his career.

@JPDotCom23: Are you serious?

Guillermo has been a top Director more than a Decade. He doesn't bring the big numbers but he's been consistent throughout his career and studios know it. That's why they give him the freedom he has to choose his projects.

Why does he do these things?

Ok, I'll admit the guy does have a vision, it's a weird one but the talent is there. He doesn't really have the box office numbers yet to be this picky about projects. This is now the 3rd potential big project he's backed out on, can he afford to be this choosy so early on in his career? Get a box office hit first before you start dropping out of projects.

Del Toro's name gets attached to more movies these days than most other directors. I generally don't believe one of his films will happen until I see a trailer. Also, am I the only one who would much rather see Hellboy 3 than Pacific Rim 2?

If I had to pick between Hellboy 3 or Pacific Rim 2, then I would pick Hellboy 3. That story needs to be finished. Especially with Perlman not getting any younger.

Agree with everything rodolforever said. Would del Toro on board mean that we would have seen Ron Perlman as Beast again?

Good! NOW MAKE HELLBOY 3!

Iīm kind of tired of these Fairy Tales remakes, reboots or whaterver the studio like to call them ...must of them suck anyway. I rather watch him to direct something else like PACIFIC RIM 2, or a brand new idea, or for godīs sake HELLBOY 3

That's a shame. Sounded like an awesome pairing, especially under the fantastic direction of Del Toro and someone starring as elegant, sexy, and talented as Watson.

That's too bad, but I had a feeling it would happen since this guy has so much on his plate. Well, it's not too late for Bill Condon to cast Emma Watson in his Disney live-action take on the material.
