Guillermo del Toro finally lays the chances of a Hellboy 3 to rest

02.21.2017

Blarg! There's nothing like logging in to disappointing news. I mean, I've reserved myself to thinking that HELLBOY 3 was a pipe dream for quite some time now, but seeing that Guillermo del Toro has made an official statement that the film will never happen, still hurts my kitty-pettin', pancake loving heart real bad.

Earlier today, Guillermo del Toro took to his Twitter account and posted the following:

Then, after del Toro broke the hearts of his 602,000 followers and then some, Hellboy actor Ron Perlman tweeted the words, "Superhero seeks employment. Likes, pizza, cats, and the Marx bros."

Additionally, back in January, del Toro posted a poll on his Twitter account as a way of gauging whether or not fans were interested in there being a sequel to HELLBOY and HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY. With roughly 130,000 participating in the anonymous survey, the reply was a thunderous "Yes!"  Shortly thereafter, del Toro said that he spoke with Perlman about getting the band back together for another hellish adventure. After their conversation, del Toro had this to say, "I spoke with Ron Perlman. He's in for the sit down. Will approach [character creator] Mignola next. Will keep you posted. Very moved by your love of pt I & II." Alas, even with fans being eager for another film, and Perlman seemingly being down to portray the Nazi-punching hellspawn once again, it's just not going to happen.

So yeah ... I, ugh. Like I said earlier, I didn't have the highest of hopes that this project would come to fruition, but seeing del Toro give what I assume will be the final word on the matter is a blow to my little nerd heart. Still, there are two awesome HELLBOY movie to enjoy for the rest of our days, and if nothing else, I'm happy that del Toro was the one to bring that character to screen. Perhaps someone else will take a stab at the franchise down the road, but I have a feeling that it'll be a cold day in Hell before something like that happens.

Let us know what you all think about this development in the comments section below! Is there perhaps another aspect of the HELLBOY universe you'd like to see be adapted into a film format? Perhaps a B.P.R.D. spin-off film? Or maybe an Abe Sapien solo venture? What about Lobster Johnson or Frankenstein: Underground? I'm just saying, there's options.

Del Toro's next directorial effort will be the fantasy adventure film THE SHAPE OF WATER, which is expected to release some time in 2017

Extra Tidbit: If you want to check out some amazing Hellboy-related stories, go ahead and grab either Hellboy: The Midnight Circus or Hellboy in Hell. Both will serve as great introductory reads to the character, even though "In Hell" is relatively new.

Very sad news indeed.

Loved both movies. It's a shame that this series gets iced for good while sequels are being pumped out for the worst kind of crap.

Shame - would've been a great trilogy. To be honest if it didn't happen really soon then it was never going to happen with the key original cast, so I guess it's never. Still, two really cool films is a lot better than most comicbooks can manage.

This sucks, but I want to know the reason. For years it had to do with Perlman or Del Toro being busy with other projects, or the budget for the 3rd film. Why is there a final nail in the coffin at this point?

Is it a surprise? No.

Guillermo's been saying for years there wouldn't be a Hellboy 3. It shouldn't be much of a surprise at this point. Hellboy 1 was pretty damn good fun while its sequel was fine. Personally, I'm very eager to see his latest, The Shape of Water. It has an excellent cast including Michael Shannon (who can do no wrong), Octavia Spencer, and one of his alums, Doug Jones, who played Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films.

Hey everyone, we're not going to give you the movie that everyone wants, instead we're going to give a bunch of other crap that no one wants! Perfect, that's exactly what I had hoped!

Why I liked hell boy 1.

I loved the first hell boy for a few reasons. Firstly its an entertaining and original movie. But something I really enjoyed was the costumes (when possible) and limited use of cgi characters. I like the realism great costumes bring as opposed to cgi crap fests. Soon, Hollywood will cgi everything. Even movies like predator will fall prey to "progressive" movie making.

With del Toro having talked about this for years, and Ron Perlman stumping for Hellboy 3 every chance he gets, I guess this points to Mike Mignola as the hold-out that killed the third movie.
