Guillermo Del Toro gives a brief update on his developing "Justice League Dark" film

Feb. 26, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Guillermo Del Toro is still progressing on his "JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK" film for DC/Warner Bros. even though it's sister film, the regular ol' JUSTICE LEAGUE is in turnaround.  Speaking to Total Film, the PACIFIC RIM helmer gave a brief update on his pursuit of the project and what his intentions are.  Read on.

"I am going to be presenting my storyline to DC and Warners of where I want to take this universe. We do have a writer, but until that is firmed up, I have to keep it a secret. I hope it happens."

Del Toro, ever the fanboy, seems deeply invested in the characters, saying:

"It's going really really well. It's like meeting old friends. I grew up with Demon Etrigan, with Swamp Thing, with Deadman, so these are characters that are near and dear to my heart."

In terms of how he'll be approaching the individual players on the team, Del Toro is focused on being faithful to the rightful origins of all involved, saying:

"I'd love to use the origins that are proper to each character. I love the idea of Jason Blood as a paladin and a knight…. I love the entire Constantine mythology, the Dead Man mythology, the Alex Holland Swamp Thing mythology. These are really rich things to well, and to dig."

Sounds pretty good, no?  Really, though, when has Del Toro put fans off with his integrity?  The guy is a straight shooter and bonafide fan, so I wouldn't expect anything less from the filmmaker.  He's become someone to count on, which is why so many fans place instant faith in whatever project(s) he's working on.  There's no date set (or even a confirmed title) for "JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK" (aka HEAVEN SENT), but it looks like the pre-production process is at least underway.

Honestly, I don't know why they don't just hire Del Toro for the regular JUSTICE LEAGUE and call it a day.  What do you think?  Would you rather see Del Toro on the "Dark" film or the superhero one?

Dark!!

DARK for sure! But the film should be in ear shot of what is going on with the Main characters from DC that will be in JL...ie, we should hear about what's going in there universe and maybe even get a cameo or something. I know this would take some serious coordination and or even a real script that they would actually have to use for JL so it would lock them in; but the payoff would be AWESOME! Maybe the backstory may be of them helping JL with something IDK...Would be great though!

League of Paranormal Gentlemen?

You can't call it "Justice League Dark". It's the equivalent of "Avengers West Coast" or "Justice League Europe" or, for that matter, CSI: Miami or NCIS: LA. The title takes an existing franchise and tries to get people to read or watch this new series or, in this case, movie, except that there is no Justice League movie franchise. At least not yet.

I really hope this progresses all the way. Perhaps Olivia Wilde as Zatanna?

So what about the regular Justice League?

So WB can get their shit together to make a Justice League Dark but not a more well known and cooler Justice League. Speaking of Justice League, why not do a Batman Superman Movie.

Glad to hear he wants to use Swamp Thing. Snyder's current run of the character has been great. I'm with Bigger Boat though, I'd rather Alec Holland have a solo flick.

This suggestion might be a stupid one. Or, this suggested strategy might work. However, del Toro could make a movie called Justice League: Dark, and Warner Brothers could release the movie. Justice League Dark, Man of Steel, and the upcoming Batman movie would introduce the Justice League to the general public. Also, someone does another Green Lantern movie, since the general public knows who GL is after the 2011 movie, and introduces GL's good buddy the Flash in Green Lantern II: Even

The general public knows Wonder Woman already. THEN, do a Justice League movie. At that point, all movie-goers know the names Justice League, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Wonder Woman, and long-time JLAer Zatanna, and the Justice League movie can be a success.
Hey, New Line's Blade kick-started Marvel's recent cinematic success. Blade was an obscure character in an unconventional superhero story. Justice League could get its kick-start the same way. Iron Man kick-started the successful Avengers movies. Ol' Shellhead was also an obscure character such as any of the Justice League Dark members are. We moviefans have seen certain artistic approaches and business strategies work before.

PuffCity. if you don't like him, that's fine. Others are allowed to. Back on track, I'd be curious to see where this all goes.

i am most excited to see etrigan on the screen. He is such a cool character. i wonder how they'll do him though. will it be like the hulk in the avengers where the same person that plays Jason Blood plays Etrigan in a mocap suit?

He's already made two great, underrated comic book films with Hellboy 1 and 2, so Justice League Dark should be no different in terms of writing, directing, and story. I think it would be cool if he brought back Keanu Reeves for Constantine because he absolutely nailed the role.

Del Toro directing Justice League would also be something I wouldn't mind either. Not my first choice to direct, but would definitely be a great choice. Especially in creating a supernatural universe with some

While i agree Reeves was solid in the role i doubt Del Toro will use him since he's made it clear he wants to do the character faithfully to the comic (blond and British).

Can we put a moratorium on blowing Del Toro at every turn on this site? He's a fine director, but let's not make him out to be more than he is. Jeez.
