Guillermo Del Toro says he is working on Pacific Rim 2 script with Zak Penn

06.09.2014

Last month it didn't sound like PACIFIC RIM 2 was going to happen, however in an interview with BuzzFeed, Guillermo Del Toro says he is still working on the script for the sequel, and he's developing it with X-MEN: THE LAST STAND and THE INCREDIBLE HULK screenwriter Zak Penn.

I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn. We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox’s Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.

Many have speculated the next movie might be a prequel, however Del Toro says the script follows the events from the first movie, and includes the characters Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi).

Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion. I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.

Legendary Pictures hasn't officially agreed to produce the sequel yet, but Guillermo Del Toro says he's "proceeding like it is happening," and hopes to start working on PACIFIC RIM 2 after his next project.

While I would be interested in checking out PACIFIC RIM 2, I don't want Guillermo Del Toro wasting too much time and effort on a sequel when there are plenty of other projects he has talked about in the past I would rather see him work on instead. PACIFIC RIM 2 might not be dead, but it's also not alive and well either.

My adult side hopes the story will be half-decent

but my inner 9-year-old is already going, "Woo-hoo! Pyew! Pyew!"

Well...

While I did have fun with "Pacific Rim", it's film that doesn't really need a sequel since it already told its whole story in that film. Now if he was working on "Hellboy 3" than I'd be excited. That's the film del Toro should be making.

As long as he learns the lessons from the first......

I thoroughly enjoyed Pacific Rim, but the idiot scientists were a horrible distraction, Ron Pearlman's character was stupid, and there was an enormous gap between the excellent opening and the great fight in Hong Kong.

Also, all the monster fights took place in the water except one (and 1/4 of the gorilla-monster), which not only made zero sense, but made watching the action virtually impossible. And can someone explain why all the monsters were covered in neon??????

I'm up for a sequel, but I'd rather have Justice League Dark.

Terrible Movie

I saw it once in theaters and I've tried two more times on Blu Ray, but I just can't see why so many people love this movie. I think its a piece of shit.

It's not that great of a movie and you couldn't see what was going on with the final fight.

I enjoyed it in the theaters, but watched it baked outta my gourd on HBO and while the spectacle was still there, the horrendous dialogue was amplified a hundred fold...

Excellent!

Pacific Rim is easily one of my favorite films from the last few years. Anything Del Toro does I end up liking and I was hoping we'd get a sequel. Pacific Rim was everything Godzilla should have been! Not too happy about Zak Penn being involved, but we all know Del Toro is having final approval on the script...I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You mean Godzilla should have had really bad dialog, terrible acting, silly scientists, and an hour between monster appearances?

Oh yeah, and a really, really anti-climatic final 15 minutes?

Why Zak Penn? I mean, why not David Hayter for instance. X-Men 2 and Watchmen were good scripts.

Pacific Rim 2, yay! Zak Penn, nay!

Penn wrote the worst X-Men movie, Edward Norton re-wrote most of the Hulk script and Whedon had tore-do his Avengers script completely because he hated it. I know Del Toro will end up doing most of the work but this is worrying.

Hopefully this time around you can see the Kaiju battles better - the first one was too dark. Godzilla was dark, yet I could see the fight perfectly.

Loved the first one immensely. Really hope we get a worthy follow up sooner then later.
