Updated! Feud Over! Guillermo Del Toro slams Michael Bay over supposed comments calling Pacific Rim a "rip-off" of Transformers

Apr. 19, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Updated: Michael Bay has posted a comment on his website clearly stating he was not talking about PACIFIC RIM with his "rip-off" comments. See his full response below.

We don't often have to take sides when it comes to the works of directors like Michael Bay and Guillermo Del Toro. Both make studio blockbusters, but they come from very different perspectives stylistically. But, sometimes a feud arises that we just cannot sit back and ignore. And when that battle calls into question the quality of TRANSFORMERS, there are some easy pickings.

At CinemaCon, Michael Bay was promoting his film PAIN AND GAIN and took it upon himself to call out all of the "robot rip-off" movies out there. He did not mention PACIFIC RIM by name, but when Guillermo Del Toro presented footage from his movie, he seemed to take Bay's jab as a direct reference to his film. Here is what Del Toro had to say:

"We are far, far far away from that in a very willing fashion. For good or bad, this is my movie. This is my universe and my creation, and I do not create through comparison. The fights don't occur in well-lit, super cool, car commercial-looking environments. They occur in the middle of a raging sea storm or in a savage snow storm. They happen in a universe that is incredibly saturated."

And Del Toro for the knockout! Well said, good sir! I enjoyed the first TRANSFORMERS movie and the Chicago sequence in the third film, but not much else aside from that. Del Toro's vision for PACIFIC RIM is not robots that are fifty feet tall but rather fifty stories tall. There does not seem to be much competition if these two types of robots were to face off. Del Toro himself said that the jaeger's in PACIFIC RIM could destroy every "robot in the history of mankind in a toe-to-toe showdown."

To be fair, Michael Bay was likely talking about movies like BATTLESHIP and REAL STEEL which both appear to be directly influenced by the TRANSFORMERS franchise. But, with no other robot movies hitting this year, I can understand Del Toro's defensiveness. In the end, we won't know if PACIFIC RIM is any good until it hits theaters on July 12, 2013. We already know what to expect from Michael Bay and TRANSFORMERS, so unless PACIFIC RIM is an abject and total failure, it will likely become the best Hollywood giant robot movie of all time.

Here is Michael Bay's response to this news via his official website.

Well today, Hollywood Reporter stated that I was in a feud with Guillermo del Toro and his Pacific Rim. Absolutely to the contrary. I was talking about another movie, at another studio that will remain nameless, while I spoke at CinemaCon in Vegas this Monday. I love how reporters put false words in peoples mouths without doing their proper research. Well cause of that sloppy reporting, I thought Guillermo was mad at me, and he thought I was mad at him. We both exchanged calls today and realized nobody was mad at anybody except we were both mad at that reporter!

This is so immature. Why would a man like Guillermo Del Toro listen to the media anyway. He should know better. I would expect that a lot more from Bay.

Glad that's cleared up but hey, the way Michael Bay acts most of the time, most of us probably wouldn't put it past him to trash talk Guillermo del Toro. I will admit to being too eager to hate on Bay though. Sorry for jumpin' the gun.

like I said awhile back, alot of hate going on now in the hollywood community, it's becoming ridiculous. It's not fair to compare the 2 direcors, because they make different movies. As for Pacific Rim, it just does not interest me in the least, nothing in the trailers has caught my attention.

At the same time judging by many of the comments below, this is usual fanboy overreacting & an excuse to just hate on Bay.

Ummm... Robot Rip-Off???

I completely forgot that Bay was the idea man that brought giant robots to the big screen... Not to mention the decades of [link] that came before that. I guess we should all bow down before Michael Bay's genius. If not for his brilliant creation, H.G. Wells would still be writing silly books oil drillers being flown off to blow up asteroids that threaten earth. Bless you Mr. Bay and your incredible contribution to cinema. Dear Michael Bay,

Please note the following:
- The premise for Real Steel came from a 1956 short story by Richard Matheson.
- The premise for Battleship was loosely inspired from a board game (ever heard of it?).
- The premise for Pacific Rim looks to be inspired by decades of manga material.

Not every movie that has a robot in it is a rip-off of Transformers. And even if it were, YOU DIDN'T INVENT THE TRANSFORMERS! DID YOU FORGET THAT PART? Get off your self-important "everything's

Whatever Bay was criticizing in terms of giant robot films, he's wrong. His Transformers franchise is the bottom of the totem pole. I'd compare it to Robo JAX, which is the quality of film that the Transformers franchise is. I'll be happy for the day when Bay retires. That will be a good day for cinema.

I don't think he meant to rail on Bay...

Michael Bay's comments were not specific. He was being quite vague, and I don't think he was talking about Pacific Rim. And Guillermo wasn't responding to Bay's "fighting words." He was responding to the possibility that Bay was perhaps talking down on Pacific Rim, but Bay was so vague that it is not a valid point.

As for Guillermo's comments... I don't think he meant to rail on Bay. I think he was just explaining that the films are completely different. That was my interpretation of

I think we're adding a little more hostility than is necessary. I don't think either of these directors' comments were supposed to be taken as offensive!

Rip-off

Del Toro's Pacific Rim rips off 30+ years of Japanese Animes and mangas, so Bay shouldn't be worried about him copying his work..

BAY...just-- please...

...Del Toro is creating something pretty original ( not genre-wise, but a movie that is his own, with characters of his own) while BAY is translating characters that already exist--that already have an audience...and sticking out like a sore thumb at times because he was obviously not a fan of these characters that he's cashing in on because there are SO many ways that he blatantly shows off that he DOESN'T GET IT-- he doesn't understand WHY some fans dont like some of his decisions concerning

It's just like Schumacher taking Batman and Robin ( but I still respect Joel, because he publicly owns up to that) --now I "get" that Bay works hard and I actually DO enjoy his movies for the fun 'splosions and butt shots of hot models, but don't get me started on all the things that I rolled my eyes at concerning his character treatment of Transformers...his idea of relatable human character choices and the overly complicated designs for the robots themselves...and the whole idea of the "ALL SPARK" cube...and even a transformer that could look HUMAN--and that was only as a plot device for ONE SCENE...so it could relate to college kids on a sexual level-- BUMBLE BEE PEEING ON A GOVERNMENT AGENT....Bay might be big and flashy in a theme park kind of way, but he has NO respect for these characters and no idea why it is that I think that about him. Being professional and turning out an expensive and complex thrill ride just isn't enough--examine that script and get a focus group of FANS who KNOW THE MATERIAL and get some feedback--Joss Whedon KNOWS the AVENGERS inside and out...he's a FAN of the material--and look how well that panned out. If you're not a fan of the material, get someone on your staff who IS--or just do something ORIGINAL like Del Toro is doing...something that you can OWN and not be weighed down by all the history and preconceptions of a thing. Am I done rambling...? Did I make any sense at all? --at least don't go around telling people that another director is ripping off YOUR movie, when said movie is always being criticized to begin with...heh heh, sorry-- you think Transformers are "yours"...Hasbro thinks that's hilarious:)

Del Toro should chill out

It's not that I consider Bay's film above Del Toro's, not a chance. But to my eyes, I never read Bay specifically mentioning Pacific Rim, and Del Toro saying this is his own creation sounds a little bit pretentious to me, I mean the guy clearly used Evangelion's world and adapted it at his convenience. I hope his robots can look and perform as impressive as he wants it to sound when he says they can destroy EVERY ROBOT IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND. He says he doesn't create by comparison, yet,

Bay has no argument here. Del Toro is the superior director in every aspect. Del Toro has every right to be confident about his work.

Del Toro would never pull the shit that Bay considers fine for his films (ie giving a robot testicles).

huh

Transformers: A story where Earth gets caught in the middle a millenium long war between two robotic alien factions.
Pacific Rim: A story where Earth has to defend itself from aliens from the ocean using man made/piloted mechs.

If thats is too close to call one a knock off of the other then i guess Transformers is a knock off of any Sci'fi movie where aliens cause damage to the earth? Good to know.

As much as people may hate the Transformers movies, the one thing that always angered me was the lack of disrespect at the Oscars for the CGI effects. Bay and especially ILM pushed the limits with fantastic realism in harsh lighting on extremely detailed robots. I love Del Toro's stuff but Pacific Rim is hiding its Jaegers and Monsters, something Bay didn't want to do with Transformers. Love or hate Bay, he has balls.

Pacific Rim doesn't look ANYTHING like a Transformers rip-off. For starters, Transformers are about robots that transform, not people controlled robots versus monsters. As a huge Transformers fan, this idea that Pacific rim is "stealing the idea" is nonsense. Pacific Rim is closer to the Anime Evangelion than Transformers. Both Bay and Del Toro should lighten up a bit. Nothing is original anymore. Transformers had 23 years before Bay touched it and human controlled machines is nothing new

Well it might not be Del Toro's intention to rip off Transformers, and I believe him. But what do you think the studios motive is for financing a film about giant fight robots and release it the same time of year? THAT COUNTS TOO! And how can anyone call Del Toro a blockbuster director? what's his most successful film, like Blade 2 making 80 mill or something? Hardly blockbuster status imo, even his international #'s aren't that great. Anyway I'm interested in seeing Pain & Gain despite not

Meh...

There are things about each director that I like and the same goes for their movies. I enjoy Bay's films because when it comes to over the top action, the man knows what he's doing. I enjoy Del Toro's movies, cause he always comes up with some crazy looking creatures and his movies tend to be a little dark and twisted. I do find it a little silly that Bay is complaining about other robot movies ripping off of Transformers, cause almost every movie that comes out these days has stolen ideas from

There are things about each director that I like and the same goes for their movies. I enjoy Bay's films because when it comes to over the top action, the man knows what he's doing. If he wants any kind of footing to stand on with this argument, then he needs to come up with a completely fresh, new idea, that nobody has done...then he can complain when people start copying.

"This is my universe and my creation"
This is a douchey thing to say since Pacific Rim is an original screenplay from the mind of screenwriter Travis Beacham - Del Toro came aboard after the script sold.

Michael Bay used the term "rip-off".

Bay is right. This does look like a Transformers ripoff and everyone knows it. Fanboys might think otherwise, but everyday people (the ones that matter when it comes to box office) knows it looks like a generic Transformers. I can't tell you how many facebook posts I see calling it out. Del Toro fans might love it, but it will bomb at the box office just like Battleship.

Battleship didn't bomb exactly when you add the overseas total. I think that this could bomb domestically but be a fairly large worldwide hit.

Bay is a poopy diaper

Michael Bay has no claim... 'pacific Rim' is clearly a rip off of Evangelion... Not that thats a bad thing

Both could be rip offs

If Bay wants to get technical, both movies could be considered ripoffs. Remember the old movie from the 80's, Robot Jox? He can be a tool.

Nowhere near transformers. This is more on the lines of the anime Evangelion.

That's like comparing National Treasure with Indiana Jones. One complements the other. Who cares if they share similarities. At the end of the day it won't take away any fan base from either movie.

Not picking sides but...

Regarding Del Toro's comment about Michael Bay filming his fight scenes in bright daylight, that is the sign of a confident film maker. A sunny environment hides nothing, you better make sure everything is there. Whether you love or hate the Transformers movies you can't argue that the CGI is beyond comparion, the detail, complexity and clarity are all there. Bay even listened to fans and slowed action bits down for the third installment.

Most directors choose to film their CGI, in rainy stormy environments to hide the flaws (Godzilla). An environment that is stormy or snowy helps hide imperfections. Like I said I love both directors just thought I would chime in.

This is another thing that always pissed me off. I don't care if people hated the Transformers movies, ILM still should have gotten the Oscar for best visuals. The level of detail on the robots in direct sunlight was phenomenol. I love Del Toro's stuff but his "world" is hiding detail on the Jaegers and the Monsters. Still can't wait to see it though

That's funny because Neil Blomkamp said they chose to make the aliens in District 9 to appear in sunlight through most of the movie because it was the cheapest and easiest way to do the CGI work.

Guillermo Del Toro vs. Michael Bay is not a fair fight at all. That's like Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson fighting a special needs toddler. William of the Bull for the win!

Best that Bay just keep those comments to himself if he's opening it up for speculation.
