Guy Ritchie redefines legend in the trailer for King Arthur (Comic Con 2016)

07.23.2016

A young Arthur runs the back passages of Londonium with his crew, not knowing his royal lineage until he grabs Excalibur. Instantly confronted by the sword's influence, Arthur joins the rebellion in order to unite the people and defeat the dictator Vortigern (Jude Law), the man who murdered his parents and stole his crown to become king. Throw all of that into a Guy Ritchie blender and you have the trailer for KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD!

Much like the recent SHERLOCK HOLMES movies with Robert Downey Jr., director Guy Ritchie is looking to put his own spin on this classic period story. I honestly had very little interest in this movie beforehand, but I'm diggin' this trailer's sense of humor and style. If the movie can maintain that same semblance of fun for its entire run-time, then count me in!

KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD will open in theaters on March 24, 2017.

Here we go again.

Ever since Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went all Jason Bourne on the bad guys, and beat them to a pulp, in the opening scene of that first remake, I realized that Guy Ritchie doesn't give a shit about source material. "His own spin" can be quite ridiculous, IMHO. God help King Arthur.

Nothing comes close to Excalibur imo. That film captured the legend, mysticism and tone just right at probably a third of the budget. When I see giant Elephants and anything else they can think of thrown at the film CG wise my mind switches off. Fantasy films need to go back to being more grounded while focusing on the quality of the script, acting and shots etc.

I love King Arthur stories, so I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic regarding this one. I still mostly just wish someone would make a movie from Bernard Cornwell's Arthur stories, which for my money are the best modern tellings of the Arthur myth.

Ugh, 3D. Already points against it for that. It does look cool, and Richie is nothing if not reliable. Great supporting cast as well. The true wild card here is Hunnam. Sure, he looks great, but it was very jarring for me the moment he spoke. Time will tell if he has has the chops to pull this off.

Don't watch it in 3D then. It's that easy.

Modern tone, but . . .

. . . of course, barbers in those days (who didn't actually cut hair) had the razor tools to make sure Art could maintain that fine side fade day after day.

Looks like a bad Warcraft 2 joke. Also looks like a tonal mess.

Anticipating this one immensely. It looks great, and I love the cast and Ritchie's style for a tale of this size and scope. I just hope it's successful enough to warrant the storyline and sequels that Ritchie and co want to tell and display through the multiple films they have planned.

This feels incredibly incoherent. I'll need to see more before I get excited. But kudos to the Joblo staff for putting in the work on a Saturday!

I agree on all points. Great looking period stuff followed by modern feeling shots and scenes. Was he air boxing? It looks like it may be a slog to get through and follow like his Sherlock flicks.
