Hallelujah, an official Red State trailer arrives

07.27.2011

Kevin Smith has been a controversial figure recently, after his last few movies failed to impress most. But the bigger issue was that afterward he started assaulting critics and fans for their negative opinions. However, he seems to have chilled out recently, perhaps because he knows he's got something good on deck.

I've heard a lot of praise for RED STATE, his Christian fundamentalist horror film that take the Westboro Baptist idiots and cranks the dial to eleven with a cult that actually murders "sinners" in the name of God.

Below we have a new full trailer for the film, which has far more footage than the teaser, and shows the mayhem and a bit of black humor in action. I think it looks pretty excellent myself, and you can judge for yourself after watching.

Extra Tidbit: Reminds me of my Baptist high school. Kidding! Kind of. We weren't allowed to have dances.

Saw it in Atlanta a few months back and loved it! It's a pretty blatant hat-tip to Tarantino and the Coens, and I really think Smith did a great job. Parks and Goodman were amazing.

Finally. I really hope this one does it for him and his audience because it is seriously exhausting being a Kevin Smith fan these days. As an apologist I can find one redeeming quality for every picture he has done. It's a skill, I assure you (see what I did there?)

Looks Good

Michael Parks will no doubt steal the show..and glad to see Kevin Pollack in anything.

On another note I'm sure this will no doubt offend certain conservative groups...I'm all for that.

Now thats the trailer I've been waiting for. Good job. I am super stoked for this, always have been. Smith seems to know how to do a good job at horror movies too. :)

It's only a matter of time before hash tags make their way into movie trailers, as well.

Definitely want to check it out.

Wow

I had not read any posts relating to this movie because I'm not a huge Kevin Smith fan. But holy crap that trailer got me excited for this movie. It looks fantastic. I'm really happy to see John Goodman in something big again! He looks good since he dropped all that weight.

Saw it at Fantasia and it was fantastic. Nice mix of intensity and black humor. Oh and as if it wasn't already obvious, Michael Parks is incredible in this.

I love Kevin Smith and I will be seeing this. that said, I don't mean to sound like an asshole...maybe its only me but I absolutely hate digital cinematography. It makes a film look cheaper than it is.

I saw this at his tour a few months back and this trailer is 99.9% more accurate to the tone of movie that this is, than the first trailer was. If you have interest in seeing this, do NOT go into it expecting a horror Hostel type flick. It's more of a Waco-esque action movie with some great dialog, and a pretty uncanny performance from Michael Parks.

Looking at this objectively

Looks like a grindhouse flick with a pedigree. I'm not too impressed, looks a bit too all over the place. The humor and the horror didn't quite mesh for me. But I'll still see, John Goodman is always a good enough reason to see a flick for me.

I liked the original trailer a lot because it showed next to nothing but set a mood. I'm honestly not sure why this is being called a "horror" film, because when I think horror, I think of the supernatural(monsters, demons, vamps, et al). I know that films like HOSTEL are considered "horror", when they should really be in the "thriller" category. Anyway, genre definition aside, I can't wait to see this. Michael Parks looks like he's going to kill this role.

Hmm. The first half of the trailer looked great. Then when it turns into a snarky shootout it feels like an entirely different film.

And I could do without every character having something clever to say. Smith needs to be more sparing with his wit. It just makes what you're seeing feel less believable.

I love the concept of the kids getting abducted, but not sure how I feel about the second act.

Interesting

So the is the movie the hack writer Chris Dumbray didn't like. Wow.

This movie looks badass. Loved line about the cost of the cross. & Pollacks line about repeating being the part that makes it work.

I have always loved Smith movies for the reason that they are honest, & point out the stuff everybody thinks about, but never says.

Unable to view the trailer on my mobile device, but from what I can remember CBum wasn't particularly fond of this after it screened at sundance, and i often agree with his reviews. Will have to check out the trailer when I get home!

At least now I feel I have some notion of what this is. A satire, with some definite origins in the [link] exploitation genre. With that in mind, I can forgive this if it's not a perfect movie, but it is even a good movie? I guess I'll have to find out.

I am getting a little tired of these “guys just wanna have sex with anyone and get trapped in a ‘hostle’ situation” films. I mean would this really happen anywhere? And if it did – why should I care if idiots like this get trapped. Plus that girl was pretty ugly, I think I’d be leaving the second I saw her.

I'm afraid to see what Fox News and the media in general are going to do when they catch full wind of this film.

Also, that cross joke at the end was fantastic.

Again?

I've suspected for a while from the title of the film that this would be Kevin Smith's take on the tired pontifications about the political right that litter modern film.
After seeing the clip, it's fairly clear that this is going to be a depiction of the left's distorted stereotype of the Tea Party and the right in general.
In other words, it'll be a load of preachy adolescent horse hockey.

Being in film school myself, I have to wade through this kind of smelly hippy politics on a regular basis, so there is nothing new here.
It'll cause an uproar for about a week or two, then it'll vanish into the wilderness of leftist circle-jerk fantasy films.

Maybe someday somebody will make an HONEST movie about the good, upstanding folks of the Westboro Baptist Church.

I guess the title is kind of inflammatory, but I don't see him attacking anyone other than the Phelps nutcases.

Maximum, you're completely missing the point. I'm not a big fan of the Westboro Baptist Church, nor am I particularly religious.

I'm not even sure if Jesus ever existed at all. I'm a long time Libertarian and agnostic.

So I don't resemble this incorrect stereotype at all.

What's annoying about this kind of oh-so-played leftist preaching in film, is that it just doesn't stack up to actual reality. It's pure delusional fantasy.

But that's when you get when you have an entire political ideology that was born out of a hallucinogenic drug-induced orgy at a rock concert in the late 60's.

It may send thrills up the legs of lefties, but then anything based on pixie dust and unicorn farts generally does.

"But that's when you get when you have an entire political ideology that was born out of a hallucinogenic drug-induced orgy at a rock concert in the late 60's"

No offense, but isn't it a little hypocritical to attack the the ideology behind one political group, while condemning them for doing the same?

@Ocelot - They'll start out congratulating each other at how clever their depiction of folks on the right are at premieres, cons, and talk shows. But once folks return fire, that's exactly the aegis they'll hide behind.

Rynobro - No. What I present isn't distorted fantasy; it's fact.

The modern progressive movement has it's roots with burn-outs like Timothy Leary and emotional train-wrecks like Jane Fonda.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against imbibing substances of any kind.

Nevertheless, it remains a poor incubator for the birth of a rational political ideology.

Having seen the movie a few months back, I can honestly say Smith doesn't make this a political issue. It's not even blatant about being WBC based.

I too have already seen this and can say that this movie has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with left/right political motivations. None whatsoever. Kevin Smith addressed the title in the Q/A after the movie and he said he originally thought of the title as Blood State, but it sounded too corny.
