Halloween Horror!

Have you ever considered for a moment, what would happen if Jason Voorhees existed outside of the FRIDAY THE 13th franchise? Walking through the dark of Camp Crystal Lake as a mocking full moon shines down, creating shadows out of darkness. As you finally reach a cabin where you hope to find sanctity, instead you see the cold, dead stare of the hockey masked maniac. Or in an old worn house, you find yourself at a large metal doorway that slides open with a huge crash and the man on the other end is none other than Leatherface from THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. We’ve seen the movies so many times that the fear usually fades, but what if it wasn’t a movie and it wasn’t dream? Thanks to Universal Studios Hollywood and Halloween Horror Nights, you can live that nightmare while still getting out alive.

It was also the night in which a select few were honored at the Eyegore Awards Scaremony. It is a gothic looking (and by that I mean cool) award that was given to folks that have made an impact in the horror community. The honorees included the great Roger Corman (who sadly, wasn’t in attendance, Rob Zombie accepted it for him), Sheri Moon Zombie, Shawnee Smith, Michael Berryman, Don Mancini, Corey Feldman and Patricia Arquette (also unavailable, as her brother David accepted on her behalf). It was a short and sweet award ceremony with a few fun clips and few celebrities in attendance. But as you may have guessed, the real fun was to be had once we arrived at the park.

It was opening night, and we were invited to see the depraved, the monstrous and the murderous walk the streets. But truthfully, when I found myself in the Camp Crystal Lake maze, every time Jason would stare me down, face to face… it freakin’’ creeped me out. This is the year that Jason, Freddy and Leatherface made their way upon the dark streets of Universal to find a few bodies and souls to devour. And it made for one of the coolest nights of horror that I have ever witnessed. And for opening night, I found that the crowded streets weren’t all that crowded. You could easily find yourself on a dark corner with some creature lunging at you or a terrified victim begging for help. Yes, a few of the lines are long, so I would recommend checking out the Front of the Line pass. But if you don’t want to go that route, you are still in for a good time.

Universal has really outdone themselves this year, with four mazes including Camp Blood, A Nightmare On Elm Street, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and their own House of Horrors. Each consists of scenes from the original movies, that would include Freddy’’s Roach Coach from A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET PART 4, the unfortunate dude in the fold-a-bed in FREDDY VS. JASON, and the previously mentioned sequence in CHAINSAW with the freaky metal door. Do you want to see Jason’s shrine to his mother? Well, if you find yourself at Hollywood Horror Nights, “yer all DOOMED!”, and that’s a horror lovers blood soaked dream.

And for all you adventurous types, you can check out the Spookified Universal Studio Tour with the Terror Tram. You are lead to on a dark journey (I do suggest more fog machines, especially while on the tram) to what we know as the PSYCHO house and the Bates Motel. You are warned of a crazed movie fan, a freakish clown named Jack, who just may be looking to make his next film, with you as the lead… or actually, victim. And any movie fan will dig the idea of walking along the same path Janet Leigh took looking for a bed and a shower. And then walking the ravaged streets where a 747 landed in Steven Spielberg’s WAR OF THE WORLDS. Hell, just being able to do that would have been cool enough, but the creepy additions of all those things that go bump in the night made it complete.

Halloween Horror Nights

So if you are looking for a nightmare come true, with Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and Leatherface in attendance, you can’t be Halloween Horror Nights. But you’d better act soon, you only have a few more days. For more information, check out the official site and enjoy the ultimate horror lovers dream. And hopefully the lines won’t get scarier than the park for you.
