Hammer time! The red band trailer for Spike Lee's Oldboy is finally here

Jul. 10, 2013by: Alex Maidy

I am a huge fan of Park Chan-wook's original OLDBOY and this remake worried me back when Steven Spielberg and Will Smith were linked to it. OLDBOY is such a dark and f*cked up story that there is no way those two could have made it what it needed to be. While choosing Josh Brolin to star was an inspired choice, I was still not completely sold on Spike Lee as the director. Lee has had a career of ups and downs with some recent highlights including INSIDE MAN, BAMBOOZLED, and THE 25TH HOUR. What OLDBOY needs is the director who made SUMMER OF SAM.

What we get is exactly what we needed. The red band trailer that debuted today is spectacular in how similar it is to the Korean classic and yet a completely new take on the story, sticking closer to the original comic. Check it out.

OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.

If you have seen the original, the controversial twist ending looks to be completely intact which I never thought would make it to the American version of the movie. A lot of people are going to be in for one hell of a surprise.!

Brolin looks great. Would it be too much to say Best Actor nomination based on the trailer? Samuel L. Jackson as the prison "warden" is a great choice and the fleeting glimpses of Sharlto Copley make this one of the better trailers of the year. Count me as super excited for OLDBOY!

OLDBOY, starring Josh Brolin, Sharlto Copley, Samuel L. Jackson, and Elizabeth Olsen opens October 25, 2013.

Awesome!!!

I knew it. now that I have seen the trailer I'm going to have to go and watch the Korean one first. I'd better do it soon so I can safety skim the comments section without fear of the dreaded Spoiler.

And Josh Brolin is a Badass.

I'm torn as I love the original and this remake actually looks ok. I just hope they keep all the extreme stuff in and don't 'Hollywood it'.

Wow, looks awesome. Looks like a direct remake scene to scene from the Korean version.

Nope. Looks horrible.

They failed to capture everything that made the original so great. I see they aren't doing the same twist since he knows what his daughter looks like. Also, this looks like is was shot on shitteo and the hammer scene will have a lot of fast cuts and edits to it. Do not support this shit.

Having never read the manga series, I can't speak to the authenticity of the "original" Oldboy but, as a fan of cinema, I can say that few movies I have seen, in the past 10 years, had as much of an impact on me as Chan-wook Park's masterpiece. This looks like it's going to be a rip off of the Korean flick...even "borrowing" the super saturated cinematography that made the original so eye popping. And the acting...JB is a great actor but he'll have a very hard time approaching the performance

This has been done so many times by Hollywood directors, Wim Wenders "WIngs Of Desire" and Alejandro Amenabar's "Open Your Eyes" to name but a few and none of them have improved on the original "foreign" counterparts. I wish I could believe that Spike Lee intended this as an homage to the original film but, it smacks of laziness to me. There are still some great movies being made in Hollywood but those are few and far between and, for the most part, they stick to the formula of super heroes, overly sentimental "reality" flicks that try to teach me something and remakes of remakes. Wouldn't be surprised if we saw remakes of The Host, Memories of Murder or Castaway on the Moon as well.

Spike Lee Film

I had too many problems while trying to create a link to the article so I will simply write this: it's interesting to note that they choose to call this movie a "Spike Lee film" instead of a "Spike Lee joint", more so to me since I had previously commented on the matter. This is what I wrote then:

I simply can't take any movie Spike Lee does seriously when he refers to his film as a "joint". It makes any movie release seem more juvenile. Seeing Oldboy with the Spike Lee Joint tag above it

Why the sudden change, not only on the poster but also the trailer itself? It couldn't have anything to do with me, but has any other Spike Lee movie ever been referred to as a "film" instead of a "joint" before?

For all those complaining

about him watching interviews of his "daughter" and how that would affect the twist, keep in mind all those interviews he watches are while he's still imprisoned. Everything he's seeing is being controlled by his captor. That whole thing is probably a "false flag". Which honestly, If that is the case, I have a little less faith in this movie what with having been able to glean that twist from watching the trailer.

ill check it out

I still remember the day Joblo made this movie of the year, i rushed to blockbuster, remember those, that day and they had a single copy of it! i was blown away! I hate remakes as much as the next person but im more tolerate of these overseas remakes. If this movie gets more people to see the original, im all for it. Sadly the average movie goer will never even know this is even a remake though

Well, seemingly another remake with a big budget and no balls! Add it to a list with Internal Affairs/Departed, The Vanishing/Spoorloos, Rec./Quarantine and many more...

Ugh...

They aren't even following the manga series more closely then the other version. It's like they are doing a mash of the two which is annoying. I still want to check it out.

Also I really hope they put a twist on the twist with that news footage and such. Otherwise... what was the point? There would be none other then to try to bank off a fan base that already exists. And if the twist really isn't there, then they should have just made an original revenge movie. Make a movie about a guy who gets locked up for years and is released and seeks revenge... that's a pretty simple idea that doesn't have to be Oldboy related. And in the end more people would probably like

The fact that you said "I still want to check it out" means they won. Also, if they did something similar but without the Oldboy name, then it'd be called a rip off and prob get ore heat.

Well as much as I like Brolin if the trailer is straight up truth this is NOT Oldboy, I knew Hollywood could not stick to the story as is they are pussies when it comes to that kind of subject matter. Oh well we still have the far superior original.

guess you didn't see the part when the guy got the hammer straight in the head. Pretty sure I haven't seen anything that violent for a while. Evil dead open the door again. But I'll agree hollywood are pussies though but we've been getting some good gore movies.

Wasn't talking about the gore or violence but I will not post any spoilers, and gore and violence are overrated anyway, any hack can do it.

This is the problem with the hang ups of some Americans. That is why the movies we get a woosie watered down crap when it comes to certain issues. I expect this remake will be the same.

The subject matter doesnt bother me. For me, knowing the twist of a movie is like watching a recorded game and someone tells you your team lost.

How do you *know* the ending without finishing the movie? I mean you could have a really really strong hunch, but until you get to the end , you can't be certain. Unless someone spoiled it for you. Then that sucks.

Also there are some great scenes in the movie. Watching a movie isn't just about knowing why takes place. Then. Oboist would ever repeat a viewing. Using your analogy, it's like knowing your team loses, but don't you still want to see some of those awesome plays that your team

So much for not being a remake....

They've been saying from the very beginning that this is its own film and absolutely NOT a remake of Park Chan-Wook's film but that seems to have been complete bullshit. It's a shame, I usually hate remakes but with a competent director it can be cool to see how a different creative team can tackle the material. Idk, so far this looks just like "Let Me In," a blow for blow retelling of the SAME exact thing we've already seen. It's stuff like this that gives Hollywood and Americans the bad

Still hoping Spike has something good up his sleeve.

significant changes

like stranger says below, unless that vid is a fake, theres no way to keep the original ending intact. interested to see what they will put in its place. still looks pretty solid, though a little less gritty in places than i expected.

There's a little part of me that wishes it didn't look so much like the original. At the same time, I'm not sure that's a bad thing. There do look to be a handful of twists thrown in there with his daughter-as-hostage. Also, it looks to be even more violent.

At the very least, I'm loving Samuel L. Jackson's white mohawk. I didn't even remember he was in this.

Love the original, and am a huge Spike Lee fan, I know the dude has his opinions and people give him a lot of flackbut I think he does some great work with the camera and this should have its fare share of interesting segments. Looks like they're going down their own path too
