Hannibal Lecter: the TV series?

Sep. 12, 2011by: Dave Davis

Although his early days were revealed (to limited interest) in the prequel HANNIBAL RISING, we haven't seen the last of Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter in his pre-Hopkins/Cox incarnation.

French studio Gaumont is planning a drama series about the brilliant and demented carnivore from THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. The show is being written by Bryan Fuller, creator of whimsical and macabre series "Pushing Daisies" and "Dead Like Me".

The hour-long show serves as a sort of prequel to MANHUNTER/RED DRAGON and "will explore the early relationship of Thomas Harris signature character, renowned psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter, and his patient, a young FBI criminal profiler named Will Graham, who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers."

The series is being produced by Gaumont International Television, an independent studio (with former NBC and Sony people in charge), so there's no word yet on what channel will air the show or how gruesome it will be when the devious doctor sits down for a meal.

Extra Tidbit: Considering the actors who previously played these characters, the casting on this should be some combination of interesting, disappointing, tragic and amusing.

I like the show, don't get me wrong, but Dexter is actually pretty poorly written. Do other seasons even matter? Does the supporting cast?

What the hell are you talking about? The first season of Dex has some of the best plotting and characterization we've ever seen in any medium. Just because the series is suffering form diminishing returns doesn't erase that landmark in storytelling.

hannibal the series?

I love this idea because its nice to see the man become the monster. the biggest challenge is not the tone of the show but finding the actor who can do the role justice. and after watching hannibal rising, i know that the good doctor is more than hopkins heck even manhunter had him done very well. so here's hoping they get the right actor, and the last season is gonna be all about how he gets caught like the beginning of red dragon this series is gonna rock!

As cool as this could be, this sounds way too much like 'Dexter'. And 'Dexter' is brilliant so I would not like to see another rip off show with lesser quality.

what about that sound like Dexter? because the only thing they have in common would be that they are both tv shows about serial killers....

This could be interesting. A series with a profiler hunting down serial killers all the while getting advice from a serial killer who has yet to be discovered.
